I've connected my MBP to my Logitech Z-5500 speakers using an optical cable (toslink connector) and a toslink to miniplug adapter. Unfortunately, no audio is coming out of my speakers. When i try to adjust the volume using the buttons on my keyboard the volume watermarkish thing pops up w/ a circle/slash at the bottom. I know the cable is good. Any ideas of whats going on?

Have you checked your preferences in Audio/MIDI (under Apps/Utils)? I'm not familiar with the onboard optical, but whenever I use external sound cards I usually need to tell OSX in Audio MIDI setup what to do.

Not to panic, this is what is supposed to appear on your screen.

The volume control is disabled using digital audio like optical because there is no controlling the volume of the light pulses in the stream (same principle with Firewire, USB, HDMI, etc). Volume is then controlled by the other end - in your case, the speakers.

Do the basics:

(you stated the cable is good - e.g. light is making it to the end)
Power
Volume
Is the port in the speaker clear of shmutz?
Is there an input on the speakers you should be changing to OPT?
Have you tested the speakers using plain 'ol conductor?
