using ext. monitor with macbook

I have a external monitor I want to use with my MacBook in closed lid mode. My question is: If my monitor is not widescreen, will I have to manually change the screen resolution to fit the monitor everytime? Sorry if this sounds clumsy, but I can't figure out a better way to phrase it.

the monitor i use has a resolution of 1680 by 1050, compared to the macbook's 1280 by 800. when i operate with the lid closed, things will look all right, though you might have to adjust window sizes and such to accomodate for the extra real estate. the fact that your external display isn't widescreen shouldn't matter.

No once you set up the setting and resolution for the external monitor OS X will remember it and fix the resolution once you plug it in. Also instead of using it in close lid mode. Set it up to be a desktop extension. You can even set it to be the default monitor. I'd advise against close lid because the macbook gets hot during normal use and if the lid is closed when the computer is on the hot air will be blown on to the lcd and could harm it. also the macbook cools itself by sucking cool air through the keys if you close the lid no cool air. Don't use close screen mode you can set it up to work the same way with the screen open.

Thanks! I'll be heading out to my nearest Apple store to pick up an adapter tomorrow. I just hope the adapter works with my ext. monitor.

Using the MacBook in lid-closed mode is fine...Apple designed it to do so.

You will only have to change the resolution once.
