Nope... the 5G ipods don't have the necessary chipset to sync over firewire. You can however charge using a firewire cable.

Lack of a FireWire chipset is the reason the 5G iPod is that thin.

iPod docks aren't port specific. You just have to buy a usb dock cable.

And no, unfortunately 5G iPods and nanos are USB only. USB 1.1 works though, even if it's DAMN slow.

Most of the combo FW/USB bridges are not much bigger ...

However, in the number of units the iPod is selling -- the cost of a USB only solution is likely a significant savings.

Really a moot point since USB2 is something all current PCs and Mac have.

But it is another kick in the ass for the lagards to upgrade.
