how do i open port? ( for torrent app)

my friend (uses pc) and i qwere talking about torent downloads and he was saying that his went alot faster after he opened a port in his router...

i had no idea what that meant until my brother asked me to do it onhis pc for warcraft 3, usuing a tutorial i did that but how would i do it on my mac?
i run azureus and my downloads are slow, will opening a port help me? and how do i do it?

umm well i guess its open port on my router right?

when i did it on my borthers dell i typed the ip into the borwser and i got the lynksis page, then typed in the appname and the port i wanted open....

i jsut want to know basically how to make my torrent client download faster becasue now it sucks...
