it seems like Fall Out Boy is very popular, and thought i'd make a pole to see who actually likes them around here.

Noooo...I saw one song at Reading last year, and thought I could give 'em a chance, even though recorded they sound dreadful...

I've actually been a FOB fan for years. (Chicago kids, I saw them playing dive clubs way back when ...)

I've heard their new CD and right now I prefer the two before that ... maybe I'm just used to those cds.

They have a few good songs, but nothing that is great...there are better new bands(90s and 2000s), and tons of better old bands(60s and 70s)

I used to like them back in the high school days and maybe my first year in college. Then I ventured out and seeked out real music. Now FOB sounds like a bunch of kids screaming in my ears.

The part I find interesting though is I can somewhat listen to the songs I used to like. Anything new they have made (or any other band similar to FOB) makes my ears bleed.

does anyone know how they came up with their name?

bartelby

does anyone know how they came up with their name?

A quick check on Wiki:

* The name "Fall Out Boy" was chosen when the band asked the crowd in their second show what their name should be and an audience member shouted out "Fallout Boy," the name of superhero Radioactive Man's sidekick on the animated TV show The Simpsons. The band was unaware of the Simpsons reference until later. When the creators of the Simpsons found out about Fall Out Boy's name, the band feared that they would be sued; however, no legal action about the name has ever been taken.

So they couldn't even think of a name themselves!

I had an interesting conversation when I was a freshman in college. One person looked through my itunes and told me every piece of music I had was complete crap. This kid was a blow hard about music.

I thought about this ...

And I thought some more ...

and I realized that it doesn't really matter what the guy next to you thinks of the music you like. Hopefully you like music because it appeals to something you look for or your relate to lyrics or you just enjoy the entertainment.

It doesn't matter if bands get popular ... hell one of my favorite bands lucky boys confusion, will never hit the national stage. That doesn't bother me for a second and it doesn't' decrease my enjoyment of their music.

I seem really defensive, and I am but I mean at the end of the day I stopped caring what everyone else thinks about my music

Those references are a little bit lost on me ...

If we're talking about the millions of people that love sexy back or fergilicious ... umm I don't really like those songs ... but I don't really care who does. I have to hear them all the time ... but it don't make opinions about the millions of people who like em' either.

...In my opinion... I do not like them at all. I mean you had guys like Jimmy Paige, Jim Morrison, Eric Clapton, KURT COBAIN, Flea, Les Claypool, Sonic youth, Sound Garden, Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses, The Vines... All of them with their own message and their own distinct sound... You can hear their pain and their happiness... And then you have your bands like Fall Out Boy who just come onto the scene one day with no talent.. just listen to the guitar and the bass it is horrible...My 5 year old cousin is a better Guitarist than whoever plays in Fall Out boy... I think music is art and self expression and is more than just making money... The CD's are just so I would say Filtered or Doctored up...They would not even compare to a live performance and to me it is more of a culture than actual musical expression... I know there are people out there that love Fall Out Boy... Good for them.. But I will listen to and create art while you listen to them rape everything Rock N' Roll is. I remember when rock was a way to say hey ***** you man! It was a way to rebel and a way of expression. But With bands like Fall Out Boy... It just makes it a joke... To me they are dead. They run the risk of blending in with the rest of the EMO crowd, (Panic at the Disco, My chemical Romance, Ok GO et al), but I suppose the bass player is the girlies favourite.;)

I mainly like their fast tempo. I also like the sound of their voice, even though you can't understand them half the time. Their lyrics are out there though

It is pretty easy to hear the lyrics in their songs.

"Love will tear us apart" -absolutely murdered a classic with whiney vocals.
"Dance Dance" - lyrics hardly way out there
"I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me" and "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me"" - screams of trying too hard to be cool and comes across as immature.

The songs are about teenage angst, partying, love. Nothing profound, which isn't my problem in particular, it is that the are trying to tie in with punk/post punk while doing these empty songs along with the try hardness.

Nu-Emo? When did emo get old enough to have nu shoved on it? Is that some melding of nu-metal and emo? Nu-metal isn't even a genre of music. And emo is a subdivision of punk. Please stop making up new genres.

Yea, rock and roll stopped rebelling a long time ago. It liked making money and still does.

Fall Out Boy is alright. I liked that "Number One with a Bullet" song but that got pretty old pretty fast for me. I wouldn't worry about people on here liking them, there are a fair amount of music elitists on this board so unless you like what they like, it sucks and you're a corporate stooge. I should know I'm an elitist too. Do you like Radiohead? Cause I think they suck. :)

I think they serve they're purpose.

I was really into them with their early material, like Take This to Your Grave. Evening Out With Your Girlfriend and From Under The Cork Tree are good albums (ones technically an EP but who cares) and they are one of my most listened to bands.

You can hear their style change through the albums, and really their sound is now 'Accessible Pop Rock' that kids can get into easily and learn more about music.

Blink 182 used to serve that purpose, then here in the UK it was bands like Busted (eugh!) so I'm sort of glad that FOB's style has evolved how it has. My little cousin is beginning to like them, and pretty soon he'll be able to appreciate some of the older punk/emo/hardcore/post hardcore that I have on my iPod

I have absolutely no idea why you'd think anyone in that band is impressive. That's not just me not liking them or having a biased opinion because they're all pussies that make bad music and are popular for it. There's nothing impressive about their lead singer. There are a lot of people that can sing and play multiple instruments and still make bad music. And yes, they are that bad, and worse.

I said that he's not impressive and that there are plenty of people that can sing and play multiple instruments and not make ****** music. It's ****** music by music standards (even if not by yours or a lot of other people's).

well clearly you have a biases opinion (we all do, so do i). that's fine if you don't like his sound, i personally do.

but did i mention that he joined the band when he was 17? and that he's the main composer of the music the band makes. and that he is also a producer of movies?

you don't think that's impressive?

don't believe me? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Stump)

I really don't understand their music. i much prefer some 60's jazz.

i will agree that half the time i can't understand what they're saying

Did anyone else not realize Panic at the Disco and Fallout Boy were different bands until years after first seeing them?

Maybe I'm the only one...

Ya know- all I can say is this:

I bet it isn't too hard to get a record contract when you come from Wilmette.

Nope. I had the same problem, they're oddly interchangeable in my mind.

Nope.

it's a song by Bon Jovi, but has a much bigger meaning. here are the lyrics:

You say you don't like my kind
A bitter picture in your mind
No, it don't matter what I say
I hear you b*tchin' when I walk away
I'll never be what you want me to be
You tell me I'm wrong but I disagree
I ain't got no apology
Just because I don't look like you, talk like you, think like you
Judge and jury, a hangman's noose
I see them in your eyes

Good guys don't always wear white
You judge a man who don't stand in line
Just because he ain't on your side
You know the man who wears those shoes
If you cut me don't I bleed like you? (You know I do)
I don't know what you've been told
Can't buy guts with a pot o' gold
A rich man's poor if he got no soul
Rich man, poor man, beggar man, king
All that **** don't mean a thing
Do you know which one's behind those eyes?
It's all a disguise

Good guys don't always wear white
Hey baby, whose side you on?
You think you got it all figured out where we belong
Forget all about your dark from light
Day from night
Wrong from right

Good guys don't always wear white

maybe you can figure out what i'm trying to prove here

Thank you for posting the story of how they came up with their band name! I will admit that I am an unabashed Fallout Boy Fan, though I still consider myself someone of good musical taste. For naysayers and fans alike, Patrick Stump of FOB's performance on the MTVu Woodie Awards proved his/their crossover power! http://www.mtvu.com/video/?id=1574355

In regards to pop music, it has it's place in my music collection. God knows I love the great rock bands with true, honest musical talent and song writing capabilities. But I don't always want deep lyrics and masterful guitar solos. Sometimes I just want to be able to sing along with some catchy hook in a pop song. I think there's a need for simple, disposable pop rock. Sometimes you just need to switch it up and go for style over substance. I can't say I'll ever pay to see FOB live or buy one of their tshirts, but I must admit some of their songs have an irresistable beat. And the lead singer (Patrick Stump) has some really fun collaborations with Gym Class Heroes, which I really like.

If someone can give me a GOOD reason (Not, "OMG!11! selLoutzz!!11!, Mainstream) to hate them, I will. Personally, I don't like where their style has gone. Back in the "Evening Out With Your Girlfriend" and "Take This To Your Grave" days, they were much better. I'm much more into bands like Motion City Soundtrack, Lights Out Dancing (what little they have on iTunes), and the rest of Fueled by Ramen's (FOB's Label) bands.

EDIT: I will say though, at 15, I can drum about as well as their drummer (Though the outtakes on iTunes are much better drumwise) and compose much more complex songs than them.

Oh yeah, is that right?

What Bands do you listen to mcness287?

Just because we like different genres doesn't mean my music is bad. I think you have a bad attitude for the crap that you just said. Seriously, stop going in threads just to bash something. That's stupid and pathetic. Get a Life.

fallout boy should die in a fire.

That's a bit uncalled for, don't you think?

This isn't the third grade. We don't wish people would blow up or die in fires.

What are you? A Psycho? I'm thinking Yes.

and what makes them bad people? they support Invisible Children. what do you support? it sounds like you are the bad person, with bad taste.

and what makes it mainstream makes it good. if it wasn't good, then it wouldn't be mainstream, now would it?

first, i didn't say anything about non-mainstream music.

as far as mainstream music, something had to be good about it, or it never would have made it mainstream.

i mean, what makes mainstream music mainstream?

I really dislike Fall Out Boy, they're like the English version - the Kooks (shudder)!

I.. couldn't think of a band further away from Fall out boy.

Infact, when I was at reading 2007 earlier this year, I thought some of lostprophet's stuff had fob's sound, oddly.
