Tell me please: I am interested in finding a free service that allows me to surf the web anonymously by masking/changing my IP address. Is this possible?

Is there a service/script which fools a server into thinking you are a different IP address than the one unique to you that your internet provider gives you?

Is it possible to select this alternate IP, and then switch back to your usual one?

I would recomend tor (http://tor.eff.org/), by the EFF. I use it when I want to be less than noticeable online ;) .

Thanks so much Mkrishnan. So, just so I can be clear: I enter in the URL of a given site, and then I can enter that site without it recognizing me?

Does this mean I can publish at a forum, for example, without the server recognizing that I have published before under my usual IP number? Thanks so much.

Yes, that's exactly what it means... notice how there's that "ipaddy.com" website linked on the page I listed? Whichever proxy you use, it can be a valuable tool to understand what's happening. Try going to it just straight up by typing it in your address bar. Then go to it either through typing your URL in the box in the page I linked or by using the service Felldownthewell recommended. You'll see that it now reports you at a totally different IP address.

In general, you just have to make sure that you navigate using buttons inside the browser window and not using the browser back/forward buttons or your bookmarks. For instance, if you use the site I linked, and type "http://www.macrumors.com" in it, then once you go to that site, you'll see in the address bar that it does not say www.macrumors.com, but rather has another URL in it. That's the URL of the proxy. As long as you see that URL, you're proxied. If you use the login button inside the MR page, you stay proxied. However, if you use a bookmark from your browser, you'll see that it comes up with the normal URL, meaning you are no longer using the proxy server.
