Dock trickery

I'm unclear - are you referring to the fact that it's on the side of the monitor instead of the bottom? That's easy to fix by right-clicking on the dock and changing the dock position.
Edit: Oh, I think you mean that the dock item options seem to be off from the actual item. Perhaps you need to show/hide the dock? Anything else changed? Does it work alright when the external isn't attached?
