If I delete something from hard drive, will iTunes let me download it again?

Hi all,

I'm running out of space and was wondering if I deleted something, would iTunes let me download it again for free?

Short answer: No!

Long answer: Some people have managed to nag Apple Support into letting them re-download their purchases after hard drive catastrophes, but I wouldn't count on it...

Burn whatever you want to archive onto CDs/DVDs and then delete it...

Considering that even a single CD can hold about 150 songs or $150 worth of songs, and considering that it is stupid not to have backups of valuable stuff anyway, why would you want to find out?

iTunes has a built in back up utility just for iTunes, take advantage of it!

Nope, they make you repurchase it. I've tried.

Remember the iPod - already backing up all your music! (Senuti will get music from iPod to Mac). Although this is also relying on another HD...Though I'm probably more likely to be struck by lightning 3 times near the Dead Sea if both HDs fail together 🙄

I don't use DVDs for backing up my library, although my library is currently over 150GB (mostly video)... so DVD backups are somewhat infeasible. So I use a network drive capable of RAID5. 🙂

But, yes... Apple /warns/ you that protecting your investment is important every time you download music or shows. They provide a backup mechanism in iTunes. Use it!

OK, thanks for the info guys...
It was mostly to do with TV shows, and if I should archive them or not...
I don't really think it's worth it as I watch most only once!

I just had a major hard drive failure and didn't have my last few downloads from iTunes backed up. I e-mail iTunes support and they re-activated my last four purchases. So, they'll do it occasionally but not for a lot of purchases.
