A 'standup guy'? Even if he had a lack of passion he was rather selfish to just give up on the team. He could have been even more of a standup guy by keeping his mouth shut and finishing the season for the team.
And becoming a hypocrite by expecting his players to show passion on the field when he has none himself?

Wow, nobody has written on this thread for 2 days?!?!
So much news, Yankees won, A-rod hit his 29th homer. Red Sox lost.
Twins and Sox had an insanely high scoring game. 34 runs between them. And in the second game, managed to shut out the Sox 12-0.

more good news, mutts are on a big losing streak and we are on our way to a third win in a row...i think we will finally overtake the muts...blasted asb.
and btw, i hate the asg, the nl never wins, and why doesn't mlb just make the al have home field every year from now on? if not, we get the next decade of hfa...grr.

Junior tied Frank Robinson with 586.
I would have loved to see Coco hit a second grand slam from the other side of the plate last night. It's only been done once before, by Bill Mueller, which was also during a game at Fenway.
Also, the Red Sox are still the only team in the AL East above .500. :p

The Red Sox will not keep up the pace they are on all season long. I am not worried yet. If at the All Star break the Yankees are 8 behind Boston then I will worry. Once the Yankees get on a role the hitting and pitching will fall into place.
Are you worried yet?:p Where's that Yankee's rolllllll????

While the Red Sox got swept in Detroit, I will take 10 back at the all star break. Do I want to be closer, yes but at the moment I have to be able to live with where we are and hope the Red Sox struggles continue.:)

There was talk on our end, there was an article in the AJC (Atlanta Journal Constitution) as well as a mention on the braves site. It's known we need another starter, and he was the best on the (very slim) market.

That's the truth. It's an indicator that something's not right under the hood. STL has lost 3 in a row four times, 4 in a row once and 5 in a row once, this season. They may never see .500 ball this year.

I'm not sure when people started being disappointed that Barry Bonds doesn't care about people other than himself. Not that he's the only athlete who's like that, but it's a little late to start expecting him to throw a bone to his own fans.
On the other hand, lots of sluggers have opted out of the home run derby for pretty good reasons: risk of injury, need for rest, lack of interest, worry that it will screw up their mechanics. Would it be nice for the Giants fans if he did it? Yes. Is he doing anything differently than dozens of All-Star players before him? No.

I'm fine with it deciding homefield advantage, but if thats gonna be the case, then don't require one player from every team to fill the roster. Then you have players who are just there because of the rule.
If you're gonna require a player from every team than the game should remain exhibition only. I'd rather see Home field advantage decided by record, as it was before, or by which league has the better record in inter league play.

As a "person of SF", I'd be more upset if Barry messed up his swing or tired himself out or injured himself in a meaningless HR exhibition. It's not like he's 25 anymore, and it's not like the Giants have any other legitimate power threats in their lineup.
Besides, I like seeing the younger guys that I don't get as much of a chance to watch. Alex Rios was pretty impressive.

Yanks/Red Sox get a lot of exposure due to their histories and rather extensive fan base. Of course MLB is going to want to showcase this to bring in more money. Money talk and Bull S*** walks. MLB is a business nothing more.
EDIT: Look at your Braves for example. 14 Straight Division Championship, multiple WS appearances and 1 ring. Yet, you can't even sell out a playoff game! What is wrong with this picture?

No argument from me, as a baseball fan I rather see teams that usually don't get Sunday night baseball worked into the rotation. You usually see the following teams on Sunday night: Yanks, Sox, Mets, Braves (Not always playing each other of course.)

So true. They really ned to figure out priorities. Listening to sports talk often, its great when the Sox are on ESPN or Fox on the weekend, and the morning crew bashes the announcers. Love them replaying some of the stupid things said. Always seem to point out the obvious during the game, they don't add anything to it just detract from it. With Fox and ESPN pretty much covering almost all sports guess its just a matter of time till people lose interest because of the telecast.

Yup, and ironically they think they need to "spice up" the broadcasts because viewers will otherwise find the games to be too dull. In reality, they are driving away the real fans of the game, the people who always want to watch because they love baseball. Only a handful of broadcasters still understand what the fans want from them: baseball, not blabbering, jabbering announcers. Even my wife, who I've converted to being a baseball fan only in the last few years, comments on this. It's gone beyond sad, it's becoming tragic. Who will stop these people from killing our game?

Yeah anytime I get the chance to watch the local broadcast, NESN, I do. Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo are great. Somethings I could deal without but no ones perfect, at least they know when to stop. I don't mind watching the Yes network as well. Both networks seem to have the right idea about the games. Let us watch them and chime in when needed. If it gets a little slow they throw in a little story but don't keep on it for 10 minutes.

I have mlb.tv so I get to see/hear many local announcers. The thing that really drives me crazy is when local announcers refer to players by nicknames, which means I have to spend a minute or two trying to figure out who the heck they are talking about.

Jul 11, 2007, 02:03 PM
Wow -- Jerry Remy! That's a name I haven't heard in, oh, about 20 years. He was my second baseman on my 1980 fantasy baseball team back in the day, back when I loved all those high batting average guys who didn't take walks (Cecil Cooper to the white courtesy phone, please).
It occurs to me too that my decline in interest in sports in general is at least partially correlated to the precipitous decline in the quality of sports broadcasts (see also NFL, NBA, and college sports). I used to watch the World Series and playoffs every year no matter who was playing; now I only watch when the Giants are involved.
The local broadcasts are a lifesaver, though. The Giants' main team of Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper started out a bit ragged 10+ years ago, but they have really matured and grown into a great tandem. Very insightful into the finer points of the game and a good deal of irreverance and humor thrown in.

Granted the Phillies haven't been the winning-est franchise over the years, but they are also one of the oldest, so calling them the "worst team in history" is kind of unfair. I'm sure a lot of teams have far worse records overall, they just haven't been around as long as the Phillies.

Even Vin Scully described Bonds as "humiliated," which I thought was a little harsh.
I don't give Dodger pitchers much credit for it though. Bonds' bat looked very slow, at least not like we're used to seeing. Past experience says he'll be hitting lasers again in a week, but he didn't look good this weekend.

Bonds himself described the situation as embarrassing. He used that very word, several times. He said he was embarrassed to be wearing the Giants uniform (considering they're in last place... but never mind).
I think it was Russ Martin who said the Dodgers got a little lucky with Bonds this weekend. But give the Dodger pitchers some credit -- they recognized that they were facing a sub-par Bonds and challenged him in several tough situations, with good results.
Also a little bit of redemption for Tomko this weekend. He's been making the case for a while that he's more comfortable as a starter. He may have earned himself the number five spot in the rotation again. We'll see next week.

His first inning was rough, but otherwise not too bad. With Schmidt out for the season and Wolf sidelined for at least another week, starting Tomko might be the best option even if he didn't earn it. On the other hand, are Tomko or Hendrickson worse than Wolf had been pitching recently?
I'm a little encouraged that they're hitting so well lately, even if I wish they showed a little more power. Any improvement that Nomar can get above his total blackout so far would be like trading for a new player.

No kidding. If anybody knows why Nomar is struggling, especially in the home run department, they sure aren't saying. It would be bizarre if he ended the season with four homers.
I really hope the fans don't boo Tomko when he takes the mound a Dodger Stadium next time, though I'm afraid they will. What is this, Philadelphia?

Anyone else think the Phillie-bashing has gotten out of hand? 10,000 losses in 124 years works out to winning about 47% of their games. A season of winning 47% of their games is a record of about 76-86. Not very good, but not really terrible.
Basically, the Phillies' all-time won-loss record suffers because they're one of the oldest teams (actually one of the oldest major sport league franchises on the planet) and they never had any winning dynasties. Similarly old teams like the Cubs and Braves have also had many losing seasons, but they also had many strong seasons. OK, so the Cubs' heyday was 100 years ago, but at least they had one.
Under those circumstances, I'd give the Phillies some credit for sticking around so long in the same city.

That was my earlier point, essentially. Every team is going to lose 10,000 games, eventually, if they exist long enough. The Phillies just managed to get to this dubious landmark first, due mainly to longevity. Ironically, the Phils might even end up with a winning record this season. Currently, they don't suck any more than the Yankees, and arguably a lot less, when you consider the teams' respective payrolls.
My reference to booing fans is a somewhat different matter. Growing up, the only city where baseball fans regularly booed their own team was in Philadelphia -- nobody else would dream of booing the home team. Now I hear it quite a bit at other parks, and I don't care for it. I might groan audibly sometimes, but I will never hoot at my own team, like the notorious boo-birds in Philly.

i know...i sort of feel sorry for you guys. aarp of the big leagues, zito is a bust, ouch.
and talking about busts, kyle davies blew it big time tonight, loaded the bases and failed to retire a batter in what is hopefully his last start as a brave. i know he's a nice guy, but i haven't trust him with any sort of game in over a year, and shouldn't have been pitching with the big club at all for 2007 (lance cormier got hurt at the end of st and davies stayed with us) despite many braves fans thinking he was going to be decent. we stink today, going down 10-3. we should have tried to trade davies during the asb, but too late now...
but at least davies isn't this next guy. scott olsen, one of the big time jerks you may never hear about got suspended for 2 games by the fish (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-0716marlinsolsen,0,7795462.story?coll=sofla_tab02_layout) for his conduct detrimental to the team. i suggest you browse some marlin forums for more info on olsen, but basically, he picks fights and acts like a 20 game winner when he's mediocre at best, his outings are like davies.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Tulsa Drillers coach Mike Coolbaugh died after being struck in the head by a line drive as he stood in the first-base coach's box during a game.
The Texas League game was suspended in the ninth inning Sunday after the 35-year-old former major leaguer was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Tino Sanchez of the Drillers. Coolbaugh was taken to Baptist Medical Center-North Little Rock, where he was pronounced dead.
"It's a tragedy for all of baseball," Drillers president Chuck Lamson told the Tulsa World in a story posted on the newspaper's Web site early Monday. "He just joined the staff and was a former Driller player. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

Considering that this is the Official Thread for the 2007 season and last I checked, Barry Bonds is still playing, and last I heard he's approaching perhaps the greatest record in the history of sports and it's still 2007, could we have some rules on what constitutes an "appropriate" comment that won't get moved?

The Yankees have 17 games in August against the top 4 teams in the AL - 3 against the Sox, 3 against Cleveland, 3 against Anaheim and 8 (and thats a pretty big 8) against Detroit. We'll see what happens after that.
We also have 28 games left to play against Baltimore and Tampa Bay.

It's clear that you missed what was going on. The subject started to turn into steroids discussion, and it so happens that Barry Bonds name is linked to said discussions. It's simple, if you want to talk about steroids in baseball take it to the above mentioned linked thread.
When the time comes when he hits 756 you can: a) Congratulate him b) Say nothing c) Make a post in the steroid thread (I say there because most likely somebody would say the steroid taker has broken the record thus inciting everybody in here)
Now, have I been perfect with my few posts about Barry? No, but if I want to talk about him and his alleged steroid use I know where to take it now.

Not at all. I was trying point out that Bonds was a hall of famer before any mention of anything else. You know with numbers, the language of baseball to paraphrase Bill James.
But hey if you want the thread to consist of "wooo my team is 4.5 games back" "nuh uh we're gonna win!"
Then by all means have at it and enjoy the wonderful thrust and parry that such communication entails.

Listen if you want to talk about Bonds (without it being tied to his alleged steroid use) then that's fine and dandy.

I don't know what Igawa's problem is. He looked like he had sorted himself down in Scranton. Supposedly he was using his changeup (which was his out pitch) more and with better results.
The results don't look too good right now though.
Ideally Mussina, Pettitte, and Clemens would anchor it down, but Mussina is nearly 40, Clemens is going to be 45 in a couple of weeks, and Pettitte is 35.
I'm sorry but that is just not going to get the job done week in and week out.
If Pettitte, Hughes and Wang can start putting together some decent quality starts like they are capable of and Mussina and Clemens are just respectable, they might be able to make a run at it considering the offense.
That offense is still too inconsistent though.

So this suspended game rule is so odd. Watching the end of a game from June that they are finishing now.
If A-Rod hits a home run in the suspended game it would count as number 493 not 500, The run he hit Wednesday would be counted as number 500.

So the Yankees drop Proctor, The Dodgers and Yankees have agreed in principle on a trade that would send reliever Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
The Dodgers, who have a 5.61 bullpen ERA since the All-Star break, have been in on a number of trade discussions involving relievers but zeroed in on Proctor over the last 24 hours.
The Yankees view Betemit as another first-base/DH/bench option for this year, and a potential third-base replacement for Alex Rodriguez next year.
Betemit hit .231 with 10 homers and 26 RBIs with Los Angeles, which acquired him from the Atlanta Braves in a deadline deal last season. He played mostly third base with the Dodgers but is unlikely to see much time there with Alex Rodriguez in the midst of an MVP-type season for New York.
Yankees manager Joe Torre has complained about the significant dropoff offensively from his starters to reserves, and Betemit could be the answer. The 25-year-old switch-hitter also can play shortstop and second base and is batting .320 (8-for-25) as a pinch hitter this season. He had pinch-hit homers in consecutive games at Atlanta in May.
I wish we could dump Farnsworth.:(
The pitching-starved St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday acquired right-hander Joel Pineiro, optioned to the minors last week by the Boston Red Sox, and cash for a minor league player to be named.
Pineiro, 28, was a 16-game winner in 2003. He was used exclusively in relief this year by the Red Sox before being sent to Triple-A Pawtucket on July 25.
Pineiro played seven seasons with the Seattle Mariners before signing a free agent deal with the Red Sox in January. He was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Red Sox, but had a 3.60 ERA in 16 road appearances covering 15 innings.

This is just insane. Why would we drop Proctor, he's our only somewhat reliable setup man. And what's this about poor reserve offensive production- Phillips has been playing first as a backup, and he's batting .300 (although i haven't heard anything about Mientkiewicz for a while)
I think we can dump farnsworth, but Cashman is too stupid to do so. Unlike most of our other relievers, he's not getting any better. Bruney is getting his confidence, Vizcaino has done a lot better, and Proctor was doing decently.
Also, Betemit doesn't seem to be doing that well, we should've traded farnsworth for him

Maybe as a Red Sox fan, you don't quite appreciate how dominant Gagne can be.
Yes he has an injury history, but this year his numbers are as good as any:

The problem all along with papelbon closing is the argument that if you have a great talent, why only use him for 3 outs every couple of days when you could use him for 6+ innings every 5.
Gagne can't reject a deal to Boston even if he's unhappy with his role there, but I would bet that getting a shot at a ring will placate him for the rest of the year.

I don't think there is any question that Papelbon would be a top-tier starting pitcher. It's never been a question of talent, but rather what the Red Sox needed the most.
Keep in mind that Papelbon closing was out of necessity, not design. He had always been slated as a SP and people were drooling over him as such.

NESN and WRKO are saying its official now too.
Talks with Dye are dead.
So Gabbard was scheduled to start tomorrow. I think the Sox will just move everyone up one day because of the day off yesterday, and have Tavarez fill in until Schilling gets back.

Bedard is hands down the best SP in MLB right now.

Nope.
He's not playing tonight. Count on 3 strikeouts from WMP though.
