Rock is a pretty wide musical spectrum. Which type do you like best? Or put in another way, which groups do you like? We could recommend groups based on that.

Hmm... pop rock osn't my strong point, but here are a few recommendations:
Ana Johnsson
Staind
Audioslave (I personally don't like the singer, but they have some awesome tracks like Cochise, Show Me How To Live)
If you like Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda (one of the singers) went solo under the name Fort Minor. Mostly Hip-Hop, but you might give it a try
Hawthorne Heights
Hourglass (this one is prog rock. Quite good :))
Incubus
Nine Times Bodyweight (They used to be called Man vs. Clock)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Evanescence
Sublime (particularly their self titled CD)
Team Sleep (Deftones' singer Chino Moreno's side project)
Oh, if you like Nickelback, you should definitely hear "Why Don't you and I", a collaboration with Santana in his CD Shaman

I reccomend looking into British indie rock...there is some truly great stuff...
A few off hand:
The Subways
Maxïmo Park
Franz Ferdinand
Kaiser Chiefs
Athlete
These bands all have a really distinct sound, and you'll be 'in the know' in no time...you won't even have time for A sides, only bootlegs and B sides...a true rocker!

Did you notice the word "personally" in my post?
Many people may like him, but I think he sucks :) Your opinion may differ, and I respect that. Please respect my own opinion

Lol,
I am the most "mainstream" person you will ever meet. Not too often will see me listening to Indie music or movies.

Those mentioned bands are very mainstream here in the UK. Worth a try.
I also suggest Kasabian, and how about Snow Patrol? Perhaps not quite "rocky" enough.

I don't consider many of those bands like Alexisonfire and Motion City Soundtrack as "popular rock," i cast them aside generally into emo, hardcore, screamo, and whatever applicable combination thereof applies. I see popular rock as more the alt-rock stuff that's on the radio every now and again... to each genre defining his own i guess ;)

Yep fair enough, i'd class it as alt/modern aswell but i wouldnt class MCS as hardcore.
To the person who started the thread, try the top artists on myspace and put
in what genre you'd like, than preview their music before you buy/download.

You could first start with listening to the radio or watching MTV (maybe not). Then check out iTunes or maybe type in "this week's top hits" with google.:)

Reading that list made me double take. Band for band, your list is almost IDENTICAL to mine. Great minds... :p
I cant really think of anything else to add that isn't already on this list
EDIT: Almost forgot, Less we forget "Deftones"?

I respect everyone that listens to "modern rock" if that's what you like, that's what you like.
Honestly though man, if you dig a little deeper, you can find some really really good rock and roll. Real rock and roll, with real guitars and amps, not processed effects. Stuff that sounds genuine.
To get you started:
The Wildbirds
The Shys
The Colour
Delta Spirit
The Parlor Mob
The Swinging Fingers (my band, but whatever)
They all have myspaces, should be easy to find. I really hope you give it a shot man.

Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
The Who - Who's Next (album)
Jimi Hendrix
Guns N' Roses
Black Crowes
