24 imac and extra monitor

Hello

Can you easily add another monitor to a 24 inch imac and will this be a DVi or VGA connector. I have a 20 inch cinema display... could I add that?

I was also told at the Apple Store the 24 inch imac display is better (brighter) tahn the 30 inch which is HD. I am not sure to go for 30 inch HD monitor or 24 inch imac and possibly add another screen. I open lots of applicatiosn and palettes. I also have slight problem with eyes so quality of image/text is vital/ The 20 inch cinema display is excellent

First get the Apple mini-DVI to DVI Adapter. What kind of cinema display is it? Does it have DVI like the current ones or Apple Display Connector like the old genration? If it has DVI, just connect it to the adapter.

Thanks for quick reply. I have the latest one with the dvi connector. Do i have to open the back of the imac and will I just get a mirror display or actual extended display like I do when I use the cinema display with my mac book pro?

there should be a mini dvi connector on the back of the iMac where all the USB's & Firewire ports are.

you should also have a choice of mirror or extended via your system prefs

I would go for the 24" iMac. The resolution is 1920x1200. The resolution is higher than HD (1920x1080) though not by much. The 24"er will allow you to have open many apps at once. I do it all the time. The iMac is easy enough to add a display onto. On the back of the iMac there is a row of ports, the very last (from the left edge) is the mini-DVI port. Just plug the adaptor into that and the monitors DVI cable into the other end of the adaptor. Hope this helped!

Thank you all for the help. I am just going to wait and see what happens with Leopard and I have until end of March to buy. I think I will go for the 24 imac and use by 20 inch display as an extension.

Yes you can use an external display. As stated, you need to get the Mini- plug that will fit into the back of the Imac. (whether you go VGA / DVI / SVideo or RCA depends on what adapter you purchase) But for using it - There is no opening of the Imac necessary. My Imac actually automatically identifies the 2nd display without my meddling in the control panel.

You can run the 2nd monitor as an extended desktop, or as a "mirror" / clone. (bear in mind mirroring might be an issue with the 20" external having a lower resolution than your 24" Imacs display)

I have my 24" Imac video output feeding my TV - so when I watch movies they show up on the big(er) screen. (no couch in front of my imac - yet)
