whats different between paper mario and say the new super mario brothers?

Paper Mario has more of an RPG format. You can talk to other characters, there are stats, equipment, and an inventory for items, and combat is turn based.

I will be picking this up. My wife's a big fan of the series. For some reason, I just never get around to playing the Mario RPGs, probably because I end up watching her play through them. :P :)

whats different between paper mario and say the new super mario brothers?

The Paper Mario games are more of an RPG with side-scrolling platformer elements thrown in. Some examples from Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door:

- When you're walking around, you encounter a Goomba that, when you touch it, will trigger a typcial RPG-style turn based battle. But if you can jump on that Goomba's head before the battle starts, you get a first strike.

- In battles, you can deal more damage to enemies by pressing a button at just the right time; likewise, you can reduce the damage dealt to you if your timing's good.

I've only been playing Thousand Year Door for a few days now. I like RPGs and I like platformers, and this is an interesting (if not absolutely compelling) mix of the two genres. I'll give it some more time before passing judgement, but it's certainly worth a look if you're interested.

Well, at least in the old ones combat was turn based. It doesn't look like it so much in this iteration.

Right now, I'm looking forward to this more than Mario Galaxy. Have you guys seen the gameplay footage. It is far more of a 2D platformer than previous titles in the Paper Mario series. From what I have seen, you never go into a battle screen etc., although you do have hitpoints. Its a 2D sidescrolling action RPG...When was the last time we saw this? Zelda 2? It is looking good and seems to have really nice art direction!

It was reason #2 for buying my Wii when I did.

I've been waiting for this since the last paper Mario came out, which let down thinking it was a regular action super mario type game. I hope this is not like past versions of the Paper Mario Series and plays more like Super Mario Bros on Nintendo DS.

I thought this was one supposed to be just a side scrolling platformer, no RPG stuff, or atleast it will be minimal.

Understand that the entire art style is meant to look as if it's made out of paper cutouts. What this version does is allow Mario to briefly sojourn into the 3rd dimension to find pathways and such that he would be unaware of on the 2d plane. So, the first and second screenshots are the same place, but one in the standard 2d view and the other what the player sees when he slips into 3d.

It's a cool-sounding mechanic, actually.

Wikipedia seems to say that it will be less RPG and more platformer:

Wiki is right, in the current Nintendo Power it says that it is Platformer first and RPG second this time around.

And THANK YOU Nintendo for making it with standard controls and not forcing gimmicky motion control down my throat.

If anyone wants and its not against the forum rules i can scan the article and post it here.

I totally agree with your statement on the control. It's not that I don't like "wiimote style" controls, I do, but don't force it. If it suits the game, go for it, if it doesn't, don't.

I LOVE the original Paper Mario (It and Twilight Princess are currently in a battle for my favorite game :)) But TYD really didn't seem to stay to the PM story line.

It's not that I don't like "wiimote style" controls, I do, but don't force it. If it suits the game, go for it, if it doesn't, don't.

Same here.

For games like this, I want traditional controls when moving around and attacking, but for menus, or any RPG type element that requires some type of selection, I want them to fully implement the Wiimotes inherent ability as a real pointing device. If anything I want both options, just like the better DS games.

Just to ramble in general; http://www.bainne.com/fun/blah_happy.gif
There's nothing really gimmicky about the Wii's controls, it's the execution that some developers have chosen, since it's a new thing. SMB's control of the main menu is gimmicky and unnecessary IMO, as in why do I have to rotate my wrist to select a mini-game, where as in the sub-menus I can use the d-pad. They should've been consistent here and preferably offered me a choice. But fortunately with most of the mini games, their controls really add a whole new level of fun and offer something that just can't be done with a traditional gamepad. I struggled with them at first, since it was new, but once I got used to these new control schemes, I really liked what they had to offer. The Wiimot'e implementation in ZeldaTP is great IMO, they just didn't go far enough in this case, where as others go overboard without refinement.

I see what Nintendo has done for input as an important step in gaming. I think others see it as a threat, because it's a big change, especially those that have only known gamepads for gaming. It's certainly opended up the flood gate of games that weren't really playable on anything but a comp, without first being simplified to accomdate the majority of all console's limited controls.

My local GameStop is the greatest place ever. Everyone who works there are Mac fans, one went to school with me, they all keep up with online news, and there's no bashers of any systems. Okay, well I've heard a few negative PSP comments about there being no good games, but that's understandable (and it was coming from a guy that works for GameStop AND PS3Land.com).

I even worked there for a while. They all know me by name and rock.

That's the GameStop nearest to my house mind you; the two GameStop's in the local mall suck, and the EBGames downtown sucks worse.

But frankly; I got myself a Wii preorder, and preordered three Wii remotes and an extra nunchuck on day one. I was one of the only people in town to have a Wii and four remotes, and to this day not one of my friends has four remotes because nobody can find them. On top of that, I preordered two copies of Wii Play there (a friend wanted one copy of Wii Play and two remotes, I wanted Wii Play and no remotes, so it worked out), and they came in fine.

Wired impressions:

http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/04/impressions_sup.html

Once again, the Wiimote is "tacked on" to a GameCube game -- and once again, it's a huge improvement. Super Paper Mario was 100% done and ready for release on GameCube in August, then moved to Wii. Holding the Wiimote sideways as if it were an old-school game controller adds to the retro feel. But even better is the ability to simply point it at the screen, which pauses the action and lets you "click" on anything you can see to get a text description of it -- or reveal hidden items and locations. I'd love to see a game built from the ground up with this in mind; for now, SPM feels like it was always a Wii game.

Play Magazine gave it an 8.5 (read it at a magazine stand). For"Pros", they said "what a collection of ideas!" and for "Cons" they said "will [the characters] please quit talking!"

I love the look of the 2D art. The 3d looks bland but that doesn't matter if that perspective allows for unique puzzles and platofrming challenges. I placed a preorder with ebgames (probably in vain) a couple weeks again and they're still saying it will be out the 10th of April. The manager personally guaranteed me a copy the day the store gets any, provided I come in that day of course, saying that he'll give me $10 off any other wii game for my $5 down in the event that a snafu occurs. Not a bad deal, and in any case I think SPM will end up being sold out for weeks and weeks like Nintendogs.

It all depends on how you define "release date"

Most stores get their shipments today so as far as Nintendo is concerned it's released to them. Most stores will sit on it (probably because they don't know exactly when the shipment will come in) so they can open up with it on shelves on Tuesday.

So today's release day, correct? EBGames is saying "Usually ships within 24 hours".

Mine should be shipping today, here tomorrow. Anyone gotten theirs yet?

Ships today, released tomorrow. Just preodered at EBgames, got it for $35 :D Check CAG if interested, or I can tell you.

I know that Nintendo has it set for tody. But it seems that Target is one of the few that will put out on the day of, although this was not true with Wii Play. Toys R Us gets their shipments on Tuesdays so they never have stuff out on the day of. And amazon isn't releasing until tomorrow.

Got mine today at the Walmart in town. Played it for a couple hours. It is pretty fun. The story line moves a little slow, too much dialogue, but it is fun.

Okay, so I have played much more of the game now, and once you get past the initial story line, it moves faster. There are some slow downs in the progression of the story, but the dialogue lessens up a bit later on, which is a plus if you ask me.

Sounds like how the previous one started out, too much talking not enough fighting.

After going to my third gamestop/ebgames, i just got the LAST unreserved super paper mario! Every store said they only got enough to meet reserved, but i asked the guy at the second store if he could call the other store in the mall (1 gamestop and 1 ebgames) and they had 1 left. Needless to say my speed walk to the other end in the mall ended in success :)

I just got it during lunch and went home and played the first half hour. The art direction and graphical styles are beautiful. The flip game-play mechanic is really clever and works seamlessly. It really feels more like a platformer when you enter the "fighting" areas, and the town areas feel RPG like. It seems like the best of both worlds, can't wait to play through the rest of it.

I've always just let my wife play the previous Paper Mario games, but this one looks to have enough interesting gameplay elements to get me to play it myself.

Yes i went to the Moorestown mall (it's technically walking distance to my house but you'd have to be crazy to try to walk route 38  )... the EB Games didn't have any exras beyond reserves, at around 2 when i went they called the gamestop near the food court for me and they they said they had "1 or 2 left." I got one of those, but i can't say they're 'sold out' ... they may be by now.

Also, the gamestop by the Acme and BJs on Lenola didn't have any, i'm not sure about the Gamestop in East Gate. Crazy how many of those stores there are eh ;). Best Buy or Circuit City had been advertising guaranteeing having them, so if you want to check there you'll probably snatch one. I just had to go to those stores because i had a gift card...

Also i have no idea about the Cherry Hill Mall further down Route 38, they have about 2 or 3 game stores...

EDIT: Good luck snagging one Zap2 :)

That's where I am, i played about an hr and a half. Whatever, i love it and i'm having fun :p

EDIT: 2nyRiggz, i agree with the 3D criticism but i find more fault in the fact that it's just plain difficult to control where you jump and stuff because it's difficult to perceive depth in the 3D mode and even harder to control the depth with the D pad. I don't know if that was a purposeful quality but it's annoying sometimes.

Got it today and played through the first world (I think it was the first world... I got 2 of those true hearts) and from what I've played through I think this Paper Mario is just a streamlined version of the past ones. I think Nintendo tried to find a good middle between platforming and RPG. I probably shouldn't be making judgement now but it doesn't seem as promising as I thought it was. I still have a lot of the game to play, so my thoughts will probably change (hopefully for the better). So far it's been fun though :D

I got mine last night at Walmart. They still had 4 or 5 copies left. I played for about 2 hours and finished World 1. I got stuck a couple times and it took me a little bit to figure out what to do. I've never played a Paper Mario game before but I like having to figure out puzzles and stuff. I also like having more story than normal Mario games. So far, I'm really enjoying it.

Both are platformer RPGs. C: DS and C: PoR are on my tops for all time favorite games on any system.

Anyone notice the DS in Saffron's shop (the cooking place). You can interact with it but it says something about data no available. New Mario for the DS comin? I hope so.

Which brings me to another point. After playin' through most of world 2 (I think I have more chapter to finish the level) it makes me wish Nintendo would make another "Mario World" I would say the Mario Worlds Series was the best platformers ever made (mario world and yoshi's island). Just jumping around in Paper Mario really makes me want the game to turn into an all out platformer. :( I could go on, but I won't.

I just go SPM today and went through to level 2-2. It is really fun so far. I actually wish I hadn't watched a couple of reviews of it before I bought it because the complaints of the reviewers might not have been so apparent.

At first I thought the graphics were bad but then I realized that they are intentionally stylized to look like a comic book in many places (at least in level 1, look at the sky in the desert part and you will see what I'm talking about). The whole place looks like it was drawn with a Sharpie and some map pencils. The reviewers complain about the 3D world being sparse alot and I can see this but I don't know what else they could have done because with d-pad control, populating the 3D space too heavily might have yielded too difficult of a game. Also, all the 2D characters are supposed to look like set pieces when you flip into 3D.

I do have some complaints about the music though. Although it is ok I wish they would just make some new themes instead of remixing old Mario themes mainly. The music is fine but it is just there for me.

The dialogue is good (if you don't mind lengthy) but I would rather have voice acters. Of course, I would expect perfection from the voice acting so maybe not...

The game is very easy so far but I assume like most Mario games this will change. It is very fun because it is so clever and unique though.

***Spoiler****
Even thought the level 1 boss (Dragon) is really easy, he is very large and reminds me of the Sunken Temple boss in Lake Hyalia in Zelda TP, only more comic book stylized of course. If all the bosses are this epic, I will be happy with the game.

Anyway, this is a must own along with Zelda TP for me on the Wii. It is much better than The Thousand Years Door IMO and I would rate it a 9.1 with what I have played of it so far even with some flaws.

I'm a big fan of SPM's style. Visually it's the kind of stuff that I'll eat up. I love the use of textures and how each area has its own uniquness. This game visually is the most appealing to me since Wind Waker. I also like the visual style of cartoons like Dextar and Power Puff Girls for reference.

I'm hit or miss with voice acting in game, mostly a miss. Most developers don't have the talent, let alone the budget/time to pull it off with their emotionless models. The robotic voice acting looks bad to me and most of the time the voice doesn't seem to fit the character at all. This is probably because they designed the game characters first, then added the voices later. Anyway, I'm old school on this since I come from the age of reading, but for games like Full Throttle or others when they get it right, I enjoy it.

I ramble all of the time, so SMP's aomount of text hasn't bothered me. My friend's only gripe about it, was that his 3 year old can't read, so he had to read through it all while explaining things. Not that he doesn't enjoy some good father and son time.

I just finished chapter 2 last night and I'm more into it now. The text sound doesn't make me want to murder anymore *yay* My biggest gripe is one that the guy on IGN had regarding Peach. She is useless since she can't go into 3D which you pretty much need to do every section.

And only being able to have one pixl at a time is a pain in the ass too since to do some things (ie. bomb+throw) you need to open the menu, pick the new one then switch back again after you did what you wanna do. I know they built the gameplay around only a few buttons but it feels clumsy to me....

My gf likes playing the levels but as soon as any story pops up, she gives gives the remote to me and walks away....:o because I guess I love sitting through length of boring text ! (well anything with Bleck is amusing)
