Help Needed Error in Disk Utillity :(

Hi, i just performed "verify disk" in disk utility and it says i got some error,:

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit


1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair


What should i do ?
Should i repair using Disk Utility CD ?
is it save for my data ?

Yes, boot from your original OS CD/DVD, and run Disk Utility from that.

If THAT persists in displaying an error, back up your data pronto.
Consider getting a big-gun disk repair program like DiskWarror or TechTool Pro, or taking the machine for service.

I got the same error a few days ago. Had to run an archive install.

I would say boot into single user mode and run fsck.

reboot - hold cmd-S, when the black and white unix prompt appears type (assuming 10.4) "/sbin/fsck -fy" without the quotes, and hit enter. That should fix the problem. Then just type "reboot" and hit enter again to restart.

I'm fairly certain that Disk Utility is just a frontend for fsck, but with the above method you don't need to go digging for a CD/DVD to boot from.


As an aside, Diskwarrior is totally worth getting ... it'll fix all kinds of drive funnyness that DiskUtility won't touch.
