It looks like I'll be acquiring a DS from someone on MR.

Just one thing. Not sure what game to get. ;)

An older game is swell, maybe Advance Wars? Since I haven't had a DS, I've been kind of ignoring the game market for it. So I'm a tad behind.

So what do you guys recommend?

For enjoyment I'd say Castlevania DoS, but for a first game you'd want something that showcases the system? How about WarioWare or Nintendogs? They use the system quite well.

Not looking for a showcaser. ;) But I will keep that in mind.

Alright then! Advance Wars, Mario Kart, Kirby Canvas Curse, Animal Crossing, any Tony Hawks game... all good stuff.

Final Fantasy 3

Erm...I highly recommend Animal Crossing : Wild World (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140087076692&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=004) and Trauma Center : Under The Knife (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140087081250&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=004). These are both excellent games and available, from me, at excellent prices.

Both Phoenix Wright games are amazing, but I don't know if it's the best choice for a first DS game, their rather short.

Brain Age or one of the equivalents to have something DS ish

Mario for a good old fashioned platformer

Castlevania or FFIII for something a bit more involved.

I was really hooked playing New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS on my cousin's DS, if you like the 2D nes/snes mario platforming games then you'll find NSMB to be quite an addicting game, mario kart is also extremely fun and it has online play.

Apart from that, well there is always Final Fantasy 3, Nintendogs (if you like virtual pets), Warioware Touched, the Castlevania games, Elite Beat Agents.

Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, Meteos, Advance Wars and Metroid Prime are also worth looking at depending on your genre interests.

Personally I'd go with New Super Mario Bros.

Forgot to say you owe it to yourself to get either Mario Kart or Diddy Kong (I'd go Diddy since you don't have either yet)

Wow. Dual Strike is hard to find.

CoS always sounded pimp. And FFIII is awesome from what I've heard at school.

So many choices.

BTW is the DS region free? Can I import?

I'd thoroughly avoid Diddy Kong Racing (http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/searchresult.asp?term=diddy+kong+racing&itemid=933008), shame as it worked so well before.

Welcome to the DS ;)
It is region free yea.

Yikes...I didn't realize there was all this stuff was tacked on to Diddy Kong...blowing in the mic, touch screen balloon popping...nevermind...man I loved that on the 64 and wanted just a straight port....oh well...will probably still get it.

If you can find Advance Wars DS, get it!!! It's getting hard to find for under $50 these days (at least that's what I paid a couple weeks after xmas). Definitely consider the Castlevanias, New Super Mario Bros., Brain Age, Final Fantasy III, Elite Beat Agents, Feel the Magic, Cooking Mama, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, or even Mario Kart or Metroid Prime: Hunters if you're into multi-player. So many good games, but also a lot of niche games that don't get the recognition they deserve!

And, yes, the DS is region free. So import some Pokémon if you can read Japanese!

Lots of great DS games, but for starters I also recommend Castlevania DS.

As others have said, my two favorites are Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. Also, Clubhouse Games is good because of the huge variety of games it gives you. Nothing too deep but there is so much to play.

Kirby Canvas Curse is some fun, Mario 64, Tetris DS, Wario Ware Touched... I'm currently looking for the Gameboy Color version of Tetris 'cause newer ones kinda suck.
