Sony has announced the introduction of a home-entertainment-hub-oriented Playstation2, with DVD burner, integrated 120GB hard drive, TV tuner, Ethernet, USB 2.0, and Memory Stick slot.

'twould seem that PS2 slightly too old for this sort of thing, no? I mean, it's been out for 2 years, and PS3 is slated for 2005. Then again, considering the long-running success of the original Playstation and the current fascination with TiVo's and DVD burners, this just might boost sales.

I do not think this PSX will be that successful. In the past when consoles tried to be multi-media devices they bombed in sales. Look at 3DO and CDi for example.

Personally I would rather not have to choose between recording a show or playing a game with my console. In many living rooms families argue over who gets control of the television so now they are supposed to share the game console/video recorder as well? I don't think so.

It doesn't really have to be successful. PS2 is a hit and it will be until PS3 comes out. This is probably just a midway jump.

Midway jumps always fail. Just ask SEGA.

By the way, I noticed you quoted Massive Attack in your signature. Can you tell me if their new CD can be ripped with iTunes 4? In Australia it is in that copy-protected disk format and I was wondering if iTunes can deal with that.

while the idea of the psx seems sorta neat i really think it will not sell well.

no american who owns a ps2 will rush out and buy this. there are other dedicated offerings.

but if you're already looking at a ps2 then a psx would be a cool thing to have. i also think this will have at least mediocre success in japan, the PS2 unjustifiably dedicated fanbase. dvd/HD based recording is taking off in a big way.

i want to start raving about why the ps2 sucks in the first place. but that's a bad idea i think. :D

I don't have the new album partly because of that reason. I've heard the solution is this:

There's an outer ring on the CD... that's the copy protection. If you take a Black perminant marker or I've heard even a small piece of scotch tape and put a line through it, the copy protection won't mount and you can burn the music.

Your thoughts on the album? I previewed it at Virgin Megastore but I wasn't that impressed.

Two more pics, from IGN:

Price: US$700?

Considering the price of the HDD-equipped DVD burners on the US market right now, I think that should be about right... since I don't think Sony will be selling these luxury consoles at a loss.

Instead of this PSX SONY could have made a smaller and sleeker version of the PlayStation 2. I doubt this PSX will get a world-wide release.

My thoughts are that the record company would have made an extra sale of the new Massive Attack if they made a proper CD out of it. The copy-protected format may stop people like me from ripping the music and loading it in my hard-drive but it also stops me from buying the music in the first place.

i want a psx. it looks very cool. i also wonder where the controller ports wil be. i don't hae ps2 right now, so this would be cool:D

also, about the DC, they should have waited another year or two to release it because then, it would have been competition for PS2. it wasn't 1st generation, nor was it 2nd generation. it was generation 1.5, a generation all to it's own.

The DC did not get cancelled because its technology could not compete with the PS2; it died prematurely because of SEGA failed to make enough money out of and every other console they released between that and the Magadrive/Genesis. I do not want to get too technical (and off-topic) but in some areas such as memory and audio the DC was superior to the PS2. As for the software, overall the DC had very good quality releases, especially the games by SEGA themselves.

PSX looks cool, but no real upgrades or added features.

Agreed. I can buy it on the iTMS but I'm still not willing to promote their choice in DRM. It's not even that good of a CD, Blue lines was really good, Protection was not so good, Mezzanine was Ok. This one is just bla and boring.

i read somewhere that the controller ports are in the back.
now what the hell kind of sense does that make??

why would the controller ports be on the front? i think it will be woreless like applemacdude suggested. maybe BT? would that be possibe for this type of system? you can have a lot more than 2 players on that.

btw, i have a DC and till play it today. only thing is that no one has any games for it anymore.

I bought a Dreamcast back when it just came out. It had some very nice games. Sega really had something there, if only they could have gotten on the black-industrial-look bandwagon, instead of the half-Nintendo half-futuristic look.

I went from Dreamcast to Xbox, next system will either be an Xbox Next (if they made the friggin' things smaller, and if Microsoft bought up more developers) or a jump onto the Sony bandwagon.

ahm, yeeah, there arent any controller ports on the front, because someone made a little mistake, the thing is actually just a new toaster. that hooks up to your entertainment center. so you can make toast. really thin toast.

btw, when they stand it up on its end in the pictures, it sort of resembles the Cube, with the ports on the bottom and the cd sticking up out of the top... and its all silverish too...
