Ok, so it talks to the internet, and I can transfer files from a USB drive. So it's not completely broken. But here's some stats...
MacMini (distance to AE : 12 feet of clear air)
Signal strength: 50%
MacPro (with built-in N airport) (distance to AE : 12 feet inc one wall)
Signal strength: 43%, Noise: 13%
Top Speed: 59Mbps
Transfer file from USB2.0 drive: 7k/sec average (yes, 7k)
Am I being unreasonable in saying this is pretty poor? As far as I can see I may as well just keep using my 'G' router as it's at least as quick. I can find no other active networks, no nearby microwave ovens, no wireless phones.
Should I return it and try another one?

As stated in the documentation attaching a G device will cause slower speeds.

I've just replaced my old airport express network (which consisted of three devices) and I can now get total coverage at full strenght throughout my home where as before it would be varied. I'd say you device is not working correctly becuase mine is a huge improvement.

It's still rubbish even if the mini is turned off. And that wouldn't account for just how poor it is in any case.

This is unnaturally poor performance. Sounds like you got a lemon there mate. I'd take it back and exchange it.

I'd exchange it. That is VERY poor performance for that device. Unlesse your walls are made of lead...

I have mine setup with three airport expresses, and linked to it I have a 24in Imac (N), Core Duo MBP (G) , Core 2 Duo MacBook (N) and a G$ iMac (B). I deffinitely see a big difference from my old router. No weak points anywhere in the house and speed is better now. Hard drives, printers and the occasional thrumb drive works fine.
