Ahhh! I saw this earlier and was going to post it, but I guess I got distracted and MacBytes beat me to it :(. Oh well, ya snooze, ya lose. That's incredible though, everyone's always talking about how MBPs are too delicate, well here's something to prove them otherwise!

WOW. Who needs a ToughBook™? ;)
I will never worry about being gentle with my MBP again!

Anyone willing to see if they can re-create the results? (not me!)

That's pretty crazy. What would AppleCare say to it?

A friend and I took the slab side of a water damaged Mac Pro that insurance had replaced and tested it's bulletproofness. .38 Special Stopped. .357 Stopped. .45 Deflected at an angle of 30 Degrees. 5.56 NATO deflected at a 45 degree angle. And a 7.62 NATO was deflected at 60 degrees.
Disclaimer: The degree numbers are approximations. Handguns used: S&W 686 Revolver used for both the .38 and .357 test. Colt Mark IV Series 70 1911 used for the .45 Test. Savage Arms Model 111 used for 7.62 test. Colt AR-15 used for 5.56 test. Your mileage may vary. Handgun tests done at The Firing Lane, Athens, GA excluding .45. .45 and Rifle tests done on a 40 acre cattle farm. Do not attempt to use the Mac Pro as body armour, even agains small arms fire.

Interesting, because I had often pondered this question. When backpacking through Costa Rica I brought my Powerbook for blogging and an image store. It also saved on internet cafe fees as all my writing was done off line.
I carried my laptop in a small backpack on my front, and often wondered if it would be enough to stop a bullet if someone threatened to shoot me. Now I know :-)

I always figured if a bullet hit the Hard drive that it would be stopped, but this one looks like it went into the latch/Superdrive area.
As Earendil said, I am definitely bringing my MBP on trips!
