View Full Version : If it were FREE from Apple, what would you get?

If someone had messed up and, as a means to make it up and not lose business from a good customer, told you to go on Apple's website and take a look at the software, memory, hard drive, or even devices (that are in a price range comparable to the items I just listed) what would you pick?
I am willing to ask for something pretty good here because this was a pretty decent sized mess-up, but I certainly don't want to go overboard here or ask for something way too much that they become resistant. Throw some stuff out there, I am trying to get this done in the next day or so.

Ooo! Oh!
3.0GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro with 16GB RAM, QuadroFX graphics, 3TB hard drive space, two 30" Cinema Displays, quad-channel fiber card, Aperture, and a USB modem! :D
....I certainly don't want to go overboard here or ask for something way too much...
Oh, don't go overboard...is an $18,673 computer really overboard?

Go for the gusto
Mac Pro 3ghz, 16gig ram, 3.5 tera HDD, best video card, airport & bluetooth, and two 30'' displays.
if they dont like that settle for like a paltry 14gig ram on the model:) :)

I would love apple forever for that---------^

I don't know if the previous posters neglected to read this from the OP but here it is again: ...take a look at the software, memory, hard drive, or even devices (that are in a price range comparable to the items I just listed) what would you pick?To me, that says a budget of about $200 or so.
Personally? I think I'd ask for the equivalent amount in an Apple gift card. Then wait 'til Adobe CS3 came out and put it towards that. But that's just me. :p

Have you seen the price of some of Apple's software though!Umm, but yes, some software is in the sub $200 price range, which is also where RAM price is usually at, too. I think it's safer to assume that the budget is closer to that than to $5,000.

I don't know if there's anything out there right now that would be worth settling for. I'd say get a gift card for $200-400 (whatever you feel is justified). When Apple releases the 6G iPod and/or Leopard, you can cash in.

Quite obviously, if it existed, the 'Unlimited' Apple Store Card. Works just like a credit card, except I won't be then one paying for everything. :D
Otherwise I would probably go for a MBP:
MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
3GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 1x2GB, 1x1GB
200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 4200 rpm
And if possible, a 30" Display to go with it. Then.... :p

Thank you, and thank you! I don't understand why people on here just start to balbber without reading. While I always appreciate people responding to posts, I mean come on 65% of the posts on this thread are just so off the mark, how hard is it to read a few lines of text...
In regards to price range I think the $200 - $500 range is dead on correct. And, to those who might have wondered or doubted, this is not a hypothetical.

You must seriously be kidding me! The mere lure of the title, which is text length constrained remember, was so overwhelming to you and the other people on here that you could not cognize the less then 10 lines of text that pretty clearly spell out exactly what the advice I was that i was seeking on here? Here's a couple of options
Airport Exertme looks interesting for the ability to plug in USB drives if you work mainly on laptops (for backups, movie storage etc). Not needing to plug anything in could make life easier.
An iPod.
Aperture if you work on photos
If you have something in mind, but it's too expensive, a gift card sounds like a good idea.
Personally I'd go for the Airport Extreme.

Just remember to specify to include current funds... else they can just clean it out before they give it to you.
As for the what i'd want, I'm not greedy... i'd go for a MacBook Pro 15" (when leopard is released and it is based on the santa rosa platform) with every single upgrade they have.

I would say an iPod (cheaper one), and iPod nano if they don't go for the reg. iPod, or a hard drive of some sort.
I would guess you would have a better chance of getting more value if you asked for an Apple branded item though as their cost would be less.

[9] AppleCare for your current Mac [if applicable]

I had the unfortunate position of Office Depot trying to make something up to me - their idea of a payment for my time/suffering WAY differed from mine. Here is hoping they are talking in the $200-500 range.
Me? I had my chair break, hit my head with a mild concussion (in hindsight - i never went to the ER like I should have), bruised my back nice and deep.
$75.
Yup, they sent me $75.
Never mind the assistant manager tried to cover it up, i had to talk to multiple people at Corporate - have this lady from the chair manufactures insurance company bugging me.
So, personally, i'd either ask for a 3 gb kit for a MBP, or a 1tb My Book Pro drive.

Depends what you actually need eg. Airport, 1gb RAM etc. If nothing, get a iPod Nano. Ebay it or give it to someone special.
Its a gesture of good will after all. Ask for too much and they'll laugh at you.

Well, personally, it was because I didn't think you wanted to hear my real answer, which would have been:
Just forgive them.
Why do we expect to be rewarded every time someone makes a mistake? Don't we all make mistakes at our jobs?
Forgive them and move on with your life. If they've been kind, continue to give them your business. If not, don't. But don't expect to be rewarded.
Better?

Maybe, but there are some good solutions out there to use the Nike+ sensor with other shoes. Most work by holding the sensor firmly in place against the laces on the top of the shoe.

Well... The Final Cut Suite qualifies as software, but I imagine they were thinking of something in the $100-$200 range. (i.e. to the others, this isn't a 'pick the most expensive thing' contest, it's a 'what should I ask for in this range'.)
If you want to aim high, and have an HDTV, you might try an AppleTV. Otherwise, if you don't have an iPod, maybe a 30 GB iPod or an 8 GB nano, whichever you prefer. If you already have an iPod you like, and need a new wireless router, there's always the new AirPort base station.
If your Mac doesn't have its memory maxed (or 4GB for a Power Mac G5 or Mac Pro,) that would be a good upgrade. An external hard drive makes a good upgrade, too, of course. It's all based on what you want and need.
Maybe wait a couple weeks for Leopard to be released (I wouldn't push it too long, though,) and ask for either the Leopard Family Pack or Leopard+iLife07, as appropriate for your number of computers.
Zelmo has a good realistic list in his post.

what kind of mess up are we talking here?
Aniej
Mar 29, 2007, 02:04 AM
First off, for all the people that answered the question I was asking, thank you for your help and taking the time to read the actual question.
Q1. What did you decide on in the end?
A1. I chose the G-tech 320GB external hard drive with quad interface and am absolutely loving it. It works wonderfully, has no fan (self cooling) looks great and was beyond simple to set up.
Q2. What was the mess up and who caused it?
A2. The mess up was by Apple Care. I want to first say how well the supervisor handled the situation and to Apple's credit worked diligently to rectify a pretty poor showing, one that I will note is bound to happen in any company. Now, the problem. I sent my powerbook to apple care because of an awful sound it was making whenever I lifted it; the noise was literally metal on metal grinding.
After waiting for the powerbook for over 21 days, it was finally sent back to me. The motherboard, logicboard, and thermal plate (no idea what that is?) were all replaced. I began to load all my data back on, but about halfway through it became immediately apparent there was a problem. I was typing an email while loading the data and noticed that it literally took about 10 - 15 seconds for each letter to appear as I typed. Then everything froze up and I got spinning beach balls galore. I shut down, which took about 30 minutes to do since since whatever the problem was, was having this major slowdown effect. Upon restarting the computer, it took over 6 minutes for it to start up. After about 20 minutes of regular internet and email use, beach balls galore and again very slow start up.
I called apple care and I gave a very detailed description to the person taking the apple care request. I made sure that they removed the loud grinding noise as the complaint and only listed the current problem. I received my apple care box for shipping and checked the order slip. Yep, you guessed it, what do you think the problem was that they had listed? loud grinding noise. I called apple care again and told the person the order was wrong and asked them to read back to me the corrected version I gave for the second time. In fact, I did this before I would even send the computer out for repair so as to prevent any confusion and even then waited a day before sending.
After checking its status online, I noticed there had been a stop order placed on the powerbook and a request for me to call. I did and the customer rep. said they were unable to replicate the problem. I asked if they had left it on for about 30 minutes before it slowed down... "slow down, what do you mean slow down? It is a grinding noise you were asking about!":   I mean come on. I told her no it is not, I again articulated the problem. They went back to work and you honestly wont' believe this, but I get a call from the tech working on it in texas who tells me he doesn't understand what sound I am referring to and wants me to describe it. At that point I had had it and asked for a supervisor.
Long story, somewhat short, I eventually got the powerbook back after close to two months. I rarely ask for things above what I think reasonable to expect based upon what I have paid, but honestly, this one deserved a big "I'm sorry." Oh, they also threw in a couple different very cool Apple t-shirts. It was a bad mess up, but was resolved eventually by a proactive and dedicated supervisor. That's the story in its entirety, well almost the whole story, I left out the whole power failure that hit apple's call center in Canada and disconnected me and lost all records of my third attempt to explain there was no noise problem.
