What happened to my external monitor settings????

So I've been using my Olevia 37" 720p HD LCD as an extended monitor for my MBP for months. It has always worked fine, set at a native widescreen res. (I think it might have been 13something X 768, not actually 720). Today I plugged the monitor in like I always do and all the settings were gone. it was set to mirror the MBP display, and now all the resolutions are wrong. I can't find one that looks native, it has black bars on the sides.

what happened, and what should I do?
 
any thoughts? It just seems like the correct resolution has dissapeared from the options menu.
