What a find! Power Mac 9500 + 20" ColorSync!!!

Wow!

Today there was a pile of old computers outside one of the neurology labs, I guess they're clearing house.

I saw an old Power Macintosh sitting there, and a HUUUUUGE 20" display.

Here (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac/stats/powermac_9500_132.html) and here (http://www.everymac.com/monitors/apple/applevision_colorsync/specs/colorsync_20.html) is the info on what I found.

Complete with keyboard and mouse!!!

AND! In a box, I found a CD caddy for the old Apple IIvx I found about a month ago!

Brought the PM home, booted up perfectly to OS9. Ethernet and all.

According to that EveryMac site, the combined cost of the two was $5300US for the computer plus $1799US.
I'm a lucky guy.

another thing... I'd like to dig up some RAM for it... only 2 of the 12 slots are being used with a total of 64mb of RAM.

Working in OS9 is VERY different from OSX. It must have been a real pain to switch.

Wow it takes up to 1.5 gbs of ram!!

Back then it must have been like how 16 gigs of ram is to us today!:)

Yeah it took a while to get used to OS X.

I remember drooling over that machine back in the day. I still remember not believing my eyes when I saw the first Mac break 100mHz (the 8100/110).

Either way, great machine, but not super useful these days.

wow the specs on that baby aare out of this world! What do you plan on doing with it! I mean my phone is more powerful! Where do you find all these things! Your so lucky! Id love to find some old macs on my doorstep!

Anyway, I'm gonna put a bigger hard drive in it and have a fun OS9 computer. I'd really like to put some more RAM in it, I'm gonna see if I can dig some up somewhere... Maybe upgrade it to 512 or so, problem is, it has to be in 64mb increments...

I read ages ago about installing OS X onto either a 603 or 604 machine. I think you can do it with Xpostfacto or whatever it is called. Harhar.

OS9 is a bit of a lame duck. But you can play Colonization natively on it! Phwoar.

I think you can also install BeOS on it, but am not sure...

Probably even more like 32GBs. Lots of people use 2GB of RAM, and 16 is only 8 times that. 1.5 gigabytes is a whopping 23 times more than 64mb. People must have been like "Ooohhh Ahhhh one and a half GB of RAM!!!"

Sounded sarcastic to me. Even for OS 9 it won't be a very impressive machine. In it's heyday the 604 PPC was supreme (before the 604e came), but ultimately that computer is not going to be very useful.

Are you familiar with Mac OS Classic? Cause it is much different than OS X.

OS9 may be a lame duck, but it's going to be worlds better than trying to run OS X on a pre-G3. That. would. be. unbearably. slow.

I only started using Macs in about October of 2005, so I'm pretty new to all of this. I am finding OS 9 pretty useless right now, but I haven't had much time to spend with it because of this week of papers and exams. Once that's all done, I'll have more time to poke around.

I just wish they were getting rid of one of their sawtooths.
