I set up my mac for windows and personal file sharing. When I connect to the mac in Vista I enter in my login credentials and it complains there wrong when I know there right.

I think this is a Vista problem, not OS X. I can connect to my Mac from XP when Windows sharing is enabled, but not from Vista. I get the same message you do.

The same happens for Vista -> Linux samba server.

Edit: Just tried Vista -> my employer's network shares, which run on Windows servers. No connection allowed. I'll have to play about with a bit more though.

You can just enable Remote Access on your Mac (System Preferences==>Sharing==>Services==>Remote Access) and then you can use WinSCP on Windows to access your machine, it works under Vista (i've tested it) with no registry editing required, though you do need to know your Mac's IP address (System Preferences==>Network)
