Has anyone beaten the compuer at "Chess", that free game that comes with Mac OS X? I used to play chess reguarly, and I was board number one at school (I'm still only 19!) but I still can't beat the computer! :(

at the higher levels, it takes way too long for "Chess" to make a move....not that I could beat it at anythng over say level 4 anyway.

The only chess that I have ever beaten against the computer was on my HP48gx calculator. I used to play it every day during accounting class... When I finally beat the stupid game I almost yelled out... :) Then I caught my composure and remembered where I was. Now I don't have the time or the patience to play against the computer. Well i guess more of the patience...

I have, I playied for more than a day, like every hour I made move, analyzed it and moved, it was a hurricane outside and it was last summer, so I did it over a 3 day period...

It was vverryy hard tho.

WOW, NICE!

I wish that happened to me! :)

Must be some weird error, try to replicate your moves and see if it happens again.

Apple's version of Chess is the most unstable ever. Make a few moves, go back before the computer finishes thinking, make another, then repeat. You'll crash it or lock it up very easily.

And, no, I haven't beaten it.

A better version of Chess is located here (www.sigmachess.com).

I've beat it several times. Then again, I used to tutor chess when I was 13... so...

I believe that there was a version of Battle Chess for Mac, although it was originally released by Electronic Arts on Amiga around 1987, and later, for the PC. I believe that Westwood Studios was the original development house.

If you're interested, you can find the secrets of Mac OS X's chess game by looking at the source code for GNU Chess.

Have you played the chess game Freeverse bundled with all those board games? The bundle that everyone with .mac could download? Now that is a slow, pathetic wreck. I beat it on the hardest level the first time, and the interface was quite annoying in its draggyness.

There have been instances where I've been up in pieces and triumph imminent, but the spinning beachball of death appeared. Think the program can't stand losing so it feigns a crash.

I can easily win solitaire on my sis's school laptop PC. On the iPod however, I'm pretty clueless. The rules aren't the same as the PC. Speaking of the iPod. They *should* include nokia-like game menu's where there's instructions and high scores etc.

cannot beat chess on OS X. iPod solitaire sucks, they need high scores though... without them, it renders the other two games useless. that's the only reason to play old arcade type games... high scores!

If any of you feel demoralized about losing at chess with the computer, feel free to open the Terminal and ask,

"What's my skill at chess?"

You will get a slight ego boost :)

This is kind of cheap but if you go to some online chess site and play against other people, you can play the openonents move in apple chess, then see what the computer does. Whatever the computer does, your replicate that move to your oponent
