Indesign text problem

Something is wrong with my type tool in indesign (CS2)
every time I want to type something(I set everything, make sure the text fill is in the foreground, the 'formatting text button' is depressed) and then when I want to type g for example it switches to gradient tool, when I hit f he switches to rectangle frame tool(shortcut -F)
Sorry, newbie here, just trying to find my way in indesign
any help?

someone may have a simpler answer, but you can try quitting indesign and trashing your preferences file which will be /username/library/preferences/com.adobe.indesign.plist

it will make a new preference file when you restart.
