Closing a word processor

My wife keeps closing documents when she wants to close Word. Part of this is because of her Windows background - but part of it is because the way we have found to close word is overly complex (she closes the document, and sometime in the future notice that there is a little black triangle under the word icon, hold the button down and select Quit).

So what's the easy way?


Sometimes we click and click and click on the Word icon but nothing appears to happen. That's another thing that takes time for a Windows person to get used to. We didn't notice the menu bar changing.

I use :apple: + Q, if keyboard shortcuts are not welcome, File->Quit

go to the File menu and choose "Quit" (or press apple - q); it's how you quit every application on the Mac.

When Word or any other app is selected, either hold down apple+q, or go to the left of the file menu where it shows the name of the app you're using, and go down to Quit.

Also remember that (unlike windows) applications can easily be left open, with little harm. If you close all documents, but keep your word processor open, then next time you need a new document, you can open it up very quickly.

In OS X it's always [Application Menu] > Quit, ie., Word> Quit

as posted above, it won't hurt to keep it idle in your dock really, since it won't be using any processing power unless you open up a new document, it should just hold onto a tiny bit of ram so its ready to go when you reselect it.

but command+q is the easiest way by far to close an app, and to close a window command+w is great too.
