Hmmm, I wonder if this is a sign that 10.5 is nearly ever so ready so they've released this?

It kinda happened with 10.3.9, with Tiger coming a month or two after. :)

I think we're going to see lots of updates to the Mac Product line after Leopard's release. The only update I can see happening is the 8-core Mac Pro after that little incident yesterday.

I hope not, many developers have reported that OSX 10.5 have critical bugs still ( and not fit for release ).

Hopefully Tiger won't be Apple's equivalent of Vista.

Apple have stated Spring 07, so Apple should take the extra time to avoid another 10.4.0 ( and worse, Vista quality ) release.

On my computer (powerpc) its only showing the download as 52.7. Should I download the combo update? is there an advantage to this?

Also, it showes that there is an airport update available, but it doesn't suggest it as needed, should I download this? I don't use airport, but I do a wireless network when I'm at work.

Guess this is obviously the final 10.4.x release regardless.

If it is hefty (and I don't know how it compares to previous releases), it may mean that this is definitely the last Tiger update, and includes some limited compatibility with upcoming Leopard features. Or maybe the iPhone bluetooth profile is just that huge. Or maybe it includes a 720p trailer for Cars.

How much do I hate you right now? I only have a 6 Mbps connection. What's worse is I work in an elementary school district w/ 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and the admin building (10 buildings total) which all share a single 1.5 Mbps T1 line. Plus each school has over 100 computers. Though not all are connected to the internet at the same time, it sure slows the internet connection to around dial-up speeds. Hopefully, we'll get a faster internet connection (hopefully 1 for each school), fiber optic in between the buildings and gigabit ethernet within each building.

Unless we see 10.4.10... People were saying that Tiger was 'due soon' after 10.3.8 was released. Don't count on it. ;)

The last seed released still has major bugs, including major bugs that appeared /in that seed alone/... and they have half-finished features appearing in the latest seed to boot. Without any stabilization period, they will not be able to release this. Considering that it takes about 3 weeks for manufacturing, it will not be released in 21 days, because seed members haven't seen a GM seed yet. I still have nasty bugs in my bug report to Apple which are unfixed from October.

Installed on my 2.66 Macpro,

No problems so far. My wifi range has improved 10 fold.

My pro is in the back upstairs room of my house, router in the front downstair s room.

I got 4 bars, down to 3, now for the first time ever, I have the full 5 bars, and the internet connect app is only 3 bars of full strength!!!!

The connection is snappier, and I'm chuffed to bits....

Now to see if aperture (what a dog  ) is any faster.

10.2.8 was released on October 3, 2004, followed by the release of 10.3 on October 24 (21 days later).

10.3.9 was released April 15, 2005 followed by the release of 10.4 14 days later, on April 29.

Leopard must be close.

Nice pattern. One thing to remember, with both the Panther and Tiger release, the release date was known at the time of those updates, so it made sense that those updates were coming.

hmm if they keep on following that pattern, then it means that 10.4.9 was released on March 13, 2007 followed by the release of 10.5 7 days later, on March 21st.

21 days, 14 days, 7 days.

i doubt i'm right, but who knows.

And yes, as someone else pointed out, 7 days is March 20th.

Which happens to be the first day of Spring. So technically they have from next Tuesday till June 20th to release it.

try holding the power button until it turns completetly off. Then press it once to turn on again. If the exact same thing happens again boot off of your system disk and run the disk utility, which is in the menu before you even start to install anything. :o

** note ** only do this if you get a question mark, because installing this update will delay start up the first couple times and make it SEEM frozen. In some cases you may even hear your fans rev up, this is normal.

*Thats Spring in the northern hemisphere :-D so Tiger isn't late yet.

Those critical bugs may actually have been fixed in Apple's internal builds. In fact, I believe they were on the "known issues" list, meaning they would probably also be somewhat easy for Apple to fix anyway. So that argument might not be valid. (Apple would perhaps not fix the bugs in the developer's version because they do not wish to mix their internal and external branches too much to help prevent leaking of new features.)

So, Leopard could very possibly come this month or early next month.

Those critical bugs may actually have been fixed in Apple's internal builds. In fact, I believe they were on the "known issues" list, meaning they would probably also be somewhat easy for Apple to fix anyway.

The purpose of seeds is to let developers make sure their apps don't have bugs that conflict with upcoming software. Unless we get builds that fix bugs we find writing code, we can't do what the seeds are supposed to let us do.

And just because you know a bug exists, doesn't mean you have fixed it, looked at it, or in any way know what the underlying cause is. You are just aware of it from testing or bug reports.

So that argument might not be valid. (Apple would perhaps not fix the bugs in the developer's version because they do not wish to mix their internal and external branches too much to help prevent leaking of new features.)

If this is true, then devs /need/ to get a build with these features, to make sure the code changes to the underlying OS don't break /our/ apps in some way. (And BTW, it is pretty standard procedure to 'integrate' single changes from one branch to another in actual development)

The purpose of the seeds aren't really to toy around with, but to let us get a head start on testing and fixing compatibility bugs so that when 10.5 hits shelves, you aren't staring at a mile-long list of software that doesn't work yet. If what you say is true, then Apple is sabotaging their own development platform. Apple doesn't need that type of setback, especially with the push for switchers.

10.3.9 was released April 15, 2005 followed by the release of 10.4 14 days later, on April 29.

Leopard must be close.

10.3 was declared gold master on october 2nd nearly a full month before its release.

10.4 was declared gold master on march 31st, again nearly a full month prior to release.

have you heard even a rumor that leopard has moved to release/final candidate status? no. even when RC1 is released there will still be weeks of testing before declaring a gold master. if the GM to retail pattern holds there's another month before is shows up on store shelves.

if apple were to release RC1 today you wouldn't see leopard until the very end of april and more likely first week of may. i would say for each friday that passes, starting this week expect leopard to appear in one week later in may, then june.

Interesting little paragraph at the start of the Macupdate page...

Pre-order Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" from Amazon.com. It's shipping at the end of this month (March). Amazon usually ships it to arrive faster than if you buy from the Apple Store. Get it faster!

Not at all, it's a waste of time. It's voodoo, and it's stupid. Put people that tell you to repair permissions before and after updates on your list of folk you don't trust to give you Mac advice.

Thanks.

But before giving people YOUR advice you may read a little more...there's specialized opinion on both sides, either for or against repair permissions...so I prefer to play it safe...in the worst case it's harmless.

2 things:

1. The editor likely knows nothing.

2. Amazon won't be shipping faster.

That's progress, others should work now after a restart. I'm assuming you had a disc in there when you couldn't open it the first time.

*** One thing I did notice is you have to actually HOLD the eject button for it work now.

Thanks reckless for that info.

I've just had to use the Installer DVD to repair permissions. Twice. Something in the 10.4.9 dramatically screwed up my install. Lots of broken symbolic links in system critical paths. MBP was not even getting past the grey screen with the Apple logo.

Before restarting Photo Booth is glitchy and slow. If you move quickly it shows some visual artifacts.

When I finish some stuff, I will restart and report back. Meanwhile you should check how is your Photo Booth doing before and after restarting so I don't have to worry too much.

To any of you intrepid upgraders out there:

If you have upgraded the Airport card in a MacBook (Core Duo) with the MacPro "n" card AND installed this 10.4.9 OS update, do you still retain the "n" functionality? There was a single report by an ADC member on another site a couple of weeks ago that installed the BETA 10.4.9 and said that he lost the "n" functionality.

Before I upgrade, I want to make sure this was either an anomoly or something related to it still being in BETA.

Anyone with this specific situation taken the plunge yet? Please provide feedback when you have it.

No. It will first download the whole update, then probably do (invisible to you) an integrity check and then it will start installing, and only the parts that it can before a reboot. Most stuff happens after the reboot anyhow.

So far, the main problem with my PMG5 Quad is the optical drive Eject key not working as others have stated. I'm using an Apple BT Wireless Keyboard.

I also use a second Apple BT Wireless Keyboard with my 17" MBP Core Duo and the eject key works just fine their after the update.

I'm very disappointed that Apple could let such an obvious bug through their QA.

What's the best way to report this to Apple so they can get it fixed quickly? Not being able to open the optical drive bay to insert a disk is going to be a problem.

Just do a standard install (not erase & install) with your existing disk, then run the combo updater and you will be as good as gold.

The other thing you could do is connect your machine to another Mac in Firewire target disk mode. Run the stand alone combo updater and select your laptops drive as the destination. Just doing that will generally fix your problems.

Well successful update again for me. Per the complaints in this thread I tried out the eject button to see what was going on. I tapped it like I always did and nothing, tried the same method again and the result was the same. If you hold the button for just a second or so more it ejects. I think this is actually a plus, since it helps to prevent anyone from accidentally ejecting a disc. This isn't a common occurrence for me, but it's happened before. I doubt this is a glitch, but if it is, it's a serendipitous one. I haven't tried restarting after the initial restart after updating so I don't know what effect it has on that right now. But everything else seems to be in order. I'll see how everything else works out eventually. But so far so good :D

Okay, this is what I can see:

Built in speakers are about twice as loud, or around that.
iPhoto loads in a TINY fraction of the time and is very very very very snappy (unlike before).
Anything Quartz related seems to be faster. Genie effect is a billion times smoother. Dashboard seems snapper & better. Doesn't stutter in on first load.
Exposé seems quicker, possibly due to Quartz improvements (although nothing abotu Quartz is said by Apple, the ATI/NVidia drivers could be Quartz Extreme related).
You now need to hold down the eject key for a short period of time to eject the disc. Improvement as I have accidentally hit the eject key a few times in the past two weeks while typing out essays etc...

One little thing I was really hoping they would fix (although this might be an iTunes problem), is CoverFlow. It was brilliant with the original pre-Apple software, however since Apple bought it and stuck it into iTunes, it's been dog slow. If you scroll right through your albums then it judders and sometimes halts up for a second or two. I know it's a problem when it needs to load 500+ front covers, but still, the original managed to do it...

Is still can't see the iphoto update. Apart from that, no noticeable differences in performance or otherwise.

Oh, that change in the eject key was a brilliant idea!

from the post right above:
"-Anything Quartz related seems to be faster. Genie effect is a billion times smoother. Dashboard seems snapper & better. Doesn't stutter in on first load.
-Exposé seems quicker"

Just noticed, and I can confirm that. Great!

This is modified for the M8, but it was originally written for D-Lux 2/3.
HOWEVER, I have NOT tried it myself, so I cannot guarantee anything.
Basically, you are on your own.

On a side note, I do agree it is mind-boggling that Apple hasn't included support for Leica D-Lux. M8 has been out for three months now and still no support. D-Lux 3 is more or less identical to D-Lux 2 (arrived 17 months ago).

Someone should be fired...

Lame. That camera has been out for over 6 months now.

Thanks for trying though.

Also the sound in 10.4.9 sounds more clear and refreshing (on MacBook).

where does it say this?

- Updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049comboupdateintel.html). In your Combo Update description.

eject button needs to be held for a second instead of a tap...better in my opinion

I have a Digital XMPCR radio with Edirol MA-20D Digital speakers

I now have major audio problems, the audio is garbled and doesn't sound as strong. Kinda like a FM radio in a car that is loosing signal when you are traveling.

I use this XMPCR for a couple of hours a day and had no problems this morning prior to installing the update.

I have a XMPCR that was modified for Toslink/Digital connection. I connect the XMPCR to my Mac Pro 2.66 with toslink cables and connect my Edirol MA-20D digital speakers with toslink cables. I use Amoeba's "LineIn" for audio pass through.

I thought it might me the FTDIUSBSerialDriver so I reinstalled it, did not fix the problem.

I also have a real bad "buzzing" sound going on in the background. When I quit JXM (the application for changing channels on the XMPCR), the "buzzing" goes away but I have a rapid ticking sound coming out of the speakers until I quit LineIn.

Anyone else have any problems with their digital audio input/outputs?

Just installed the update on my 24" iMac. All went well except the icons for my external FireWire HDD icons.

(Larger Image (http://media.storples.com/images/firewire_hdd.png))

I can't figure out how to get them back to the standard Firewire icons short of putting custom icons in there. Anyone know what those icons are for? They almost look like SD cards or something?

Otherwise, all good!

I still think Leopard isn't going to be ready until June. Besides, Apple otherwise wouldn't have anything major to unveil at the WWDC.

stevie boy must have called you and gave you the lowdown on what he has got up his sleeve then?

Big improvement; i seem to hit the eject button at least once per day when aiming for the delete key - luckily i rarely have a disc in the drive, but now it should be no problem. :)
