question about permissions

that article says it is because of the basesystem pkg file...I did a spotlight search, and that file is in my applications/library/receipts folder....but maybe it's supposed to be in my HD/library/receipts folder...??
i never touched that file, so I'm confused...i've only had this Mac for a week or so....😕
maybe I should just update to 10.4.9??
now that I think about it, I don't think I have a library folder in my applications folder on my other Mac....is that normal?

Hm...you shouldn't have a Library folder inside your Applications folder at all to my knowledge.
Moving the BaseSystem.pkg file to /Library/Receipts might work, but I suspect there's a bigger problem if you've got an /Applications/Library folder. Could one of your other Library folders (either top level or a user) have gotten moved into your Applications folder by accident?

Hmm...okay, my bad. I don't remember ever seeing that before, but then again, it's been awhile since I got a new Mac. And I suppose I deleted that folder because it didn't serve a purpose...there's no reason I've ever seen to put Receipts there. 🙄

Otherwise ALL of your receipts should be in /Library/Receipts, a system level folder.

it's got every pkg from iChat to Airport updates in there..
so what the heck..? guess i'll just copy that file over and have it in both library folders??
so I have a library folder in three places now....HD, User, and Apps......uggh.

It's not that confusing...
~/Library stores each user's application preferences
/Library stores system level perferences and application settings
/Applications/Library store preinstalled application settings (Don't ask me WHY it's there either.)
Do you know when they started doing this or if upgrading gets rid of it?
I just checked my fiancée's iBook...it came pre-installed with Panther and has been upgraded to Tiger. I am certain that neither of us deleted it, but there's no such folder there on her machine.

It was on my Intel iMac Core Duo. I've seen it on the new MacBooks that I image for work too.

i moved that file over to the /library/receipts folder, did a veryify/repair disc permissions and it ran without an error so.....😀
odd how it works like that, and I never even had that folder on my Powermac G5, just had /library and ~/Library

That's where they should have been in the first place too. I'm glad you got it working again. Just remember repairing permissions is a good way to fix application issues not a performance booster.
