View Full Version : Dead iBook Hard Drive

The hard drive in my G4 iBook (800 MHz) appears to have died over the weekend. I tried to run Disk Utilities with the 10.4.? installation disk, but it stopped after a few seconds because of an error on the drive.

I have a couple of questions with which I'd appreciate your help.

1. Anyone have experience with Macservice.com they can share? It looks like a good service, and the price seems reasonable to replace the drive.

2. When the company recovers the data from my drive and installs it on the new drive, are the disk errors also copied? (I hope this question is less dumb than it seems to me now.)

3. Is there software I should buy once I replace the drive to mitigate this risk in the future? Obviously, I'll need to do a better job of backing up my data, but is there good software out there that is a bit more robust than Disk Utilities?

4. Update: The problems surfaced after installing 10.4.9.

Thanks!

Needless to say, I'm overwhelmed by the responses here. Thanks for the help!

1. I've never heard of them.

2. I would guess they would at least save the data, which is the most important thing.

3. DiskWarrior is often recommended.
