I just plugged a mono cable into my powerbook's line-in, but I'm not getting any audio from the output. what can I do to monitor the sound going through my line-in? extra hardware isn't an option!

thanks :)

Do you mean through the OS or some program?

If you have garageband, just select monitoring on for a real instrument track and select your audio input for that track.

through the OS, preferably. it's not picking up and sound on the line out when i play sound through the line in (looking at the sound prefs pane)

i'm using audacity to record. tried selecting the monitor option there, but because the OS doesn't think any sound is going through the output, nothing plays.

the sound records fine and i can play it back, i just can't hear it whilst it plays
