Is the iMic any good?

I only want it to record my band. It will be used in combination with some kind of mic just to record rough demo's.

is it even useable in this context? Or is it purely for inputting Lp's and stuff?

basically i found one for 15 bucks at a pawn shop, and it's tempting,

or should I just get one of those USB mic's like the snowball..?

again, not looking for primo quality recordings, but they must at least be "useable" not all muddy....

thanks :)

What type of mic, specifically?

The iMic does not provide phantom power, so it is not appropriate for a condensor mic that requires it. The iMic has 1/8" connections, (unbalanced, of course) so you will have to use a cable adaptor and perhaps a balancing transformer to hook up.

You should be able to get acceptable results as long as the mic is competent and you spend the time to arrange the instruments, room, and microphone so that the mic is picking up a balanced and pleasing sound. In some rooms, on some days, that may not be achieveable.
