Hi all,

A friend of mine is getting a 17" MBP (she wont wait till the new ones come out), and i've been tasked with getting everything across from her C2D MBP 2.33...

Normally i'd say its a piece of cake, but she's got XP running under bootcamp - does this complicate the moving of 'everything' from one mac to another? Simply put, can migration assistant move everything from a 'bootcamped' machine to a newer one that isnt, including the windows installation? What impact will this have on partition sizes?

The target disk transfer will transfer over all the mac os stuff only. You will have to create a new boot camp partition on the new computer, reinstall all the software, and transfer over the documents and settings manually.

anyhow.. migrate assistant does not do bootcamp. and for bootcamp, you will need to do it manually. and you will need another licence if you want to run both of them.

you can look for a clone utility for Windows to clone the windows partition and do it that way, but you still need another licence to run XP there.

It's basically a hardware upgrade, from a 15.4" to a 17", but there is a bootcamp partition on the 15.4" machine...

You could physically swap the harddrives... Yes, it will void both warranties but it will make your job easier.

This was my thought as well. In windows world you could probably use something like norton ghost to copy the disk image over, but i'm not sure if there's a similar solution for macintosh, maybe with the ability to work over firewire?

That said if they were my machines, i was selling the second one, and the HDDs were identical or close enough to it, I'd just switch them to avoid the hassle.

OK, it's still a hassle, but I'll take a hardware project over a software project any day.

I think i'll go with the migration assistant for the OSX side, and then redo the bootcamp part, as i dont want to void the warranty on either machine (the 2.33ghz 15.4" was only bought in November last year, and it becomes a nice little upgrade for me ;) )

Plus we're both getting AppleCare in a few weeks for all 3 machines

I'm thinking


Migration asst from her 15.4"-2.33 to 17",
Redo bootcamp and apps on 17" (that takes care of her stuff :D )
Format 15.4"-2.33 as new and migrate my OSX stuff from my 2.16
Redo bootcamp and apps on my new 2.33 as on my old 2.16
Format the 2.16 as new, update and use as just shared OSX-only secondary machine


Is there anything i should be wary of on the OSX side? Or is the migration assistant that good?

User profiles, passwords, email settings etc all moved without hassle?

I haven't done it before so any advice is handy :D :D :D
