hi,

i finally got a macbook and was looking for an external firewire drive to go with it.
would a bus powered 5400 lacie be good for the job, or should I really look for one with an AC power supply?

nope, you're going to need to get an AC powered 7200rpm drive.

The faster the better. I went through the same ordeal trying to pick out a drive, and all research and recommendations from other people told me that the slower, bus-powered hard drives simply aren't fast enough.

I bought one of these and I'm very happy with it...fast, quiet, portable and built well:
