Quitting a program command

Does anyone know the command for quitting a program?
Its some kind of short cut like in windows its Alt F4....
anyone know it for Apple?

err, yeah. apple+q. use apple+w to hide a window (same as clicking on the red dot). you can't use apple+q for finder windows, you shut down finder, you shut down OSX!

Well, not quite:

apple (command)-Q = Quit
apple (command)-W = close Window
apple (command)-option-W = close all windows

Finder is an application and you CAN shut it down, but you won't have easy access to drives, desktop, file manipulation, etc. You can still do it from the Terminal (command line).

OSX is really awesome about shortcuts:

In finder window, press apple (command)-1, apple (command)-2, apple (command)-3 to cycle through the different views (icon, list, coloumn).
If you option-click any of the jelly buttons on a window, it will do it to all windows. Should I go on?

Don't forget Option+Command+Escape (force quit). I think this one is brilliant. I like getting the list of current applications to force-quit. I sometimes demonstrate this as a typical difference to OS 9.
You can use this to restart the finder aswell.
 
O'Reilly's Missing manual has a complete list of all shortcuts in it if you want more. There are tons of them. Option-mute is one of my favorites, takes you right to system preferences, as is Apple-Shift-Q to log out.

I think its more fun (and often easier) to simply use the kill command in terminal after running TOP to get the process ID.

More fun: yeah, true... looks more intersting aswell.
Easier? What's easier than hitting 3 keys on your keyboard at once? Unless something is bothering the Finder, in which case using force-quit won't help....
Or if you specifically want to kill a non-Aqua app, or a child proces. Yes, then.
But usually if Word X or IE or gets stuck hitting Option+Alt+Esc is easiest and quickest.

Yeah thats what I mean, sometimes you can go through the force quit routine and nothing happens. Never a problem with the terminal. And since I keep the terminal on my dock, its not much more effort than clicking 3 buttons.
 
Yeah I guess thats true. Once or twice I've had the termial fail to kill an errant program, but the entire computer is usually frozen at that point. I got used to using the terminal for that because I couldn't figure out when force quit would work and when it wouldn't. Sometimes it was a piece of cake, sometimes it resulted in the eternal beach ball of doom. Is there a reason why it works sometimes and not others? I'd like to know the rational behind that, so I would know when to use force quit and when to use the terminal; since, as you say it is a more involved process.
 
It's better to say that using the terminal has better chance of getting the job done. .

I know how to get to the terminal in OSX but how do you get to the terminal in OS9.

Sorry for the newbie questions.

OS9 does not run over a Unix build, and therefore cannot use a terminal.

First thing you gotta do to get to the terminal is install OS X. 😉
Seriously though, there is no terminal in OS 9. OS X is built over UNIX, which is where the terminal comes from.

Yeah, when OS9 freezes, it's usually gone titsup. It's usually unsalvagable except for a hard reset.

Another reason it's a good thing Apple chucked it in the clay!
