I wonder if someone will get this to fully function as a desktop computer. Would be nice if you could install your own apps on it, and use the USB-port to connect a keyboard and mouse. (it don't have bluetooth, no?)

What I think is cool is it has really only been a couple of days and peple are already SSH'ing into their ATV, and can find and replace primary interface graphics, increase HD size, which is really not necessary if you buy into the cache principal of ATV, and can install many additional codecs.

So far you have to do actual surgery to ATV, but how long will it be till third parties do it FOR YOU and ship you an "updated" ATV for a nominal fee?

Why is everyone so fixated on USB and ignoring the wifi and Ethernet interfaces as a means to avoid cracking the box?

That's what I am waiting to see. It's not the most powerful system out there, but it's certainly got some potential as a fully functional computer, and the price isn't bad. I assume these will eventually hit the refurb store for around $250, and if there is a way to set it up for use with a keyb and mouse as a media player (obviously the intended purpose) and web/email/word processing terminal it would be a great buy, imo.

Because eyeTV runs on USB. That is :apple:tv's only input method as far as DVR is concerned. You can't DVR over WiFi.

My iMac G4 runs at 800 MHz, originally had 256MB RAM, and a 60GB HDD. The only difference is the attached screen and ventilation. I see no reason why this unit will not be able to run well enough to do simple tasks like word processing.
