View Full Version : Overview: MacRumors Nike+ Challenges

Mar 27, 2007, 09:28 AM
This thread is the entry point for the MacRumors Nike+ Running Challenges. It can be called the MacRumors 'running club' ;) Everyone is welcome! Perhaps there will be a new product from Apple in the future called iRun or :apple: Run:rolleyes:
The idea behind this came with the Nike+ product and great forum members in LikeTom and DoctorQ. This is the place where anyone in our 'little' community can participate and virtually run with the members here.
Each month we create challenges and have members of this forum sign up for motivation, competition, love of running or just for fun. There are challenges for total distance, age breakdowns for distance, average distance (so some others have a chance), and race challenges (1 mi, 5k, and 10K) - you can sign up for which ever ones you would like and will be invited to participate each month.
Click here to see the community's milestones!
The history of the challenges can be seen here:

Each month a new thread will start and be added to this list as an entry point for discussion. I hope the membership continues to grow so we can have all of the members here one day joining us and trying to stay fit (I mean you know that computer folks have a rap about the shape they are in :p ). Let's buck the trends and have some fun and get moving.
Anyone interested in joining can PM me or ask within a monthly thread. Any general questions about the events or ideas can be done here.
Keep running - or start running or walking for that matter - everyone is welcome.

I don't think he was trying to belittle you - it was a little confusing if you're not familiar with what the subject is.
But like twoodcc says - it's a good reason to go get the iPod Nano and Nike+ kit. I got them after the challenges here got started, and I love it.
BTW - you don't need the Nike shoes - you can just attach the Nike+ sensor to your existing running shoes using any number of methods, including commercially available holders.

True emw, I wasn't trying to belittle him at all. Just laughed because the subject was about Nike+ and he doesn't have the sensor, much less the iPod. It was just humorous to me, lol, sorry. Didn't mean to criticize at all.

Exactly. I have the Asics Gel-Nimbus VIII's and use the Marware case (http://www.marware.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Marware.woa/5/wa/selectedCategory?catalogCatID=226&wosid=mge1SCdXbmryJghUxElApw) for carrying my sensor and it works just great!

No... I don't know anyone fast enough to make it into the top 1000. Saw the sign at the Nikestore a few weeks back but was surprised that it never popped up on the Nike+ website. I think I knew more about the SF Women's Half Marathon than a local event which was sad.
Sounds impressive to be a superuser - so can we tell you what added features we'd like before you go visit again? My personal wishlist includes settings for indoors (treadmill) and outdoors so I can track which is which more easily.

I got an email for a Nike+ supersonic VIP invite and i can take a guest. i'm not running...
I don't know when the next meet up is but yeah. At the last one Nike where really trying to hit the social networking market and learn through forums like this one. I agree with the teadmill and outdoor comment. i find i run faster on a treadmill. By the way we where chosen as Super users by our demographic rather than mileage we've run... just mentioning that because some forum users on the Nike+ site got a bit angry when they weren't chosen in relation to the miles thay had run.
pics to come...

Thanks for all the invites Ziwi, but you may want to take me off the list. Running has been consistently hard on my knees for some reason, so I am just sticking with cycling for now and training for the MS 150. No more running for me in the near future.
Thanks again!

Posted in the April running thread, but doing it here as well.
If you could please add me to the challenges my ID is "kellen 21", space between kellen and 21.
Just getting back into running, used to do it more often. Now just running 2.5 miles to get back in shape and work up my stamina for longer runs.
Thanks.

I pm'd him/her, so just waiting for the invite.
My goal is on day one run in morning, then lift at night followed by another run. Next day same, just without the lifting. Then third day is like the first. 4th day is usually rest or one run.
Did this 4 years ago and worked like a charm. However back then I wasnt:p old enough to drink, was new in town (Palm Springs, lived with parents over summer break from college), no girlfriend and weather was easy to run in. Now I am old enough to drink (Happy Hour!), have friends, live with my girlfriend and live in Seattle. What a change!
Mileage isn't the longest, but I have never been one for long runs. Right now I am working up to 3 miles per run slowly, but am at 2.5 each run now.

Anyone here using the Nike+ Sportband?
I'm getting rather fed up with my iPod thinking that the Nike+ adapter isn't plugging in and was thinking that if the Sportband doesn't actually physically connect to anything then it can't think it's not plugged in anymore.
Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on it for me. Thanks :)

yes, there are several people on here who have the sportsband. i have one, but i hate it, really. it is less accurate than my nano, and the display on the sportsband has already messed up, and does not have a backlight. (so good luck running in the dark)
but some people love it. if it was more accurate, and had a backlight, then i'd use it instead of my nano

you need to look under you challenges
This first challenge seems the toughest. :)
I received a bunch of emails for the challenges from ziwi, when I click on them it takes me to Nike+ website, but when I log in and it just lists all the challenges. I try to filter on "MacRumors", "25,000", etc. But do not see them.
When I look in "My Challenges" all I see is "Create Your Own Challenge" and "Browse the Gallery"...

I thought the only battery was in the sensor - and your iPod will warn you when it gets low (or should do!) I think you can turn it off if you're not planning on using it by pushing the button on the bottom.
I did have a problem a few weeks ago where it suddenly stopped working after only three months (apparently it had been sold long after it was manufactured) but the genius bar kindly swapped me out a new one.

as far as ziwi, you can find him by searching his username, and then sending him a private message with your nike+ id or email. if he doesn't respond, you can try to do the same on the nike+ forums. hopefully he'll come back soon.
in the meantime, how do you like nike+ on the touch?

I'm loving it, had everything but the armband (bought one of those dongles for my shoe because 5 bucks is that much less than 100) until today and first thing I did was stick my iPod in there and off I went. It really is that much more motivating when you can see everything going on and how much you're really doing. I'm a goal oriented kind of guy and that's why I was turned off from running after High School. I have a very easy schedule in college this semester so now is the best time to get in it with the touch. Thanks for the response!

when it's colder it is harder to get out there, but you can still do it, even if it's much shorter runs. the key is to keep at it, even if the runs are short.

Got a Garmin Forerunner 405, and love it too much to think about going back to Nike+
i'm glad that you like the garmin, but sad that you aren't using nike+ anymore. but the important thing is that you keep getting out there! ;)

I didn't want to drop $350 on a watch, but Nike+ was just a pain. Not connecting, randomly disconnecting, non rechargeable batteries dying, sweat killing my iPod(s). Sportband solved my problems for a couple months, but then it died hard. Thankfully Nike had the voluntary recall.
It was hard finding the motivation to run without knowing how far, and quick I was going. It's nice to know times, and then trying to go out and beat them.
I really miss the Nike+ community, as far as I can tell that is one area where Garmin lacks.

oh, i understand, believe me. i went thru the same logic that you did: i was thinking the same thing at one point, about getting a garmin. something that's actually accurate, and won't break my ipod.
but it came down to price for me. and so i decided to just stick with nike+.
yeah nike and apple really hit the spot with the nike+ community and all. without that, nike+ wouldn't survive.
well, good luck with the garmin. keep running! ;)

I run with both a Garmin and my Nike+. I run with the ipod anyway as I like to listen to music when I run, so having the Nike+ stuff is no real hassle for me and means I get to take part in the competitions. The data from the Garmin is what I use for all my training logs though!
Cheers for setting up the challenges Ziwi :D

about a week ago now. New colors, a white background (for increased visibility), and sealed to prevent moisture from getting in (I guess a lot of people have had this problem, tho I haven't). A nice gesture, but it still has two fundamental flaws - no intervals and (most importantly) woeful inaccuracy at faster speeds. Just thought you all might like to know!

Hopefully it holds up better then the first gen did.
