I have not found much help anywhere else so i thought i'd post my querie here. The thing is the Playstation 3 is cheaper on ebay if you buy the japanese version. I'd be all set to buy one but i want to know what the difference is between the UK and the Japanese PS3.

The jap version plays more ps2 games. but you will only be able to watch jap blu-ray videos not the uk ones.

The reason for the price difference with the Japanese ones may have to do with regions certain media is allowed to be played in. I believe the games for the PS3 are region free meaning you can play any games in the world on any version of the system. The problem may arise when it comes to the Blu-Ray movie playback. The Japanese version may not allow you to play Region 1 (North America) media or whatever region the UK is in. This may be why they can't sell them and are selling them for less. I could be wrong but its possible.

After looking it seems that my theory may be the case, check out this link (scroll a few replies down):

If it's a Japanese console Sony UK will not honour the warranty if anything goes wrong. This is also true of an imported PSP.

Also, the Japanese PS3 might have a different power adaptor. (I know that this was true in the good ol' days of importing a Megadrive or SNES - it might not still apply today, but it's something that's definitely worth checking.)

EDIT: Whilst the new PS3 games are region-free the backward-compatibility function is region-locked. So if you were planning on playing your existing PS2 games they won't work unless they are Japanese imports.

As far as Blu-Ray movies go, you'd be able to play Japanese and North American releases on the Japanese PS3. They're both in the same region code now.

I thought Blu-ray and HD-DVD were both Region free?

Blu-ray has only three different regions: A/1, B/2, and C/3. North America and Japan fall into region A/1.

Scroll down to the middle of the page for more information.

The ONLY difference between the US and Japanese PS3 is region lockout for PS1 and PS2 games. Everything else is the same. The power adapter is UNIVERSAL for all the consoles, since the power brick is inside the console, not the outside.
