i think especially on a solid background (like car body panels or tinted glass) a solid block of color is easier on the eye and more catching than the bands of color. Is is an apple sticker, or a pro gay/lesbian symbol? Just saying, I've had both, for the record. Just like the white better.

The multi-colored rainbow thing is just so......80s.

plus if we had a rainbow apple there would be gay jokes all over the place.

I like the white better -- just wish they would have put it "right side up" on my Pismo (glad they fixed that in the newer laptops).

It looks funny upside down when the lid is open... which is, what, 99.8% of the time?

It looks especially funny in movies and TV shows upside down.

"Think different", I guess...

Well..I'm gay so I'm biased, hee hee..the rainbow does have the classic look to it but by now it looks a bit dated, I like the current one better for the moment because it looks..well..classy, I really like it glossed though...

Although if I were to put a sticker on the car I don't have, it would most definately be a rainbow one.

I wasn't offended or anything, just stating my take on the Apple logo, the rainbow hasn't been a gay pride symbol for all of eternity, its fairly recent actually and that's probably one of the reason why they changed it so as not to be associated with the gay community, but fact remains the rainbow logo is more recognized as an Apple symbol, its classic...

if for some reason the rainbow logo will get me more lesbians to watch i like that one. but for any other reason i like the solid logo better.

I was surprised by the results of this poll...

I thought the old one would have more support :) and I still like it better. The newer one may look more "classy" but also more "serious" ...

I still have 2 stickers of the old one, and now that I've got a car... :D

BTW: I hadn't even thought about the guy/lesbian connotation until I read this thread... and I don't really think it's very important

interesting how on other discussions the voice for the old style logo was so large, yet with a simple poll like this we realise most of us prefer the new style.

I wonder what's next? Apple with a pin-stripe? nahhhh.

The rainbowcolored logo fits really well on the old grey boxes, but on the new boxes the solid color is best.

I like the current logo best.

Actually, the grey one that appears when osx starts up is pretty nice too, so is the blue one that fallows.

I think the solid colour version really looks much better, it fits on almost anything and it's very recognisable. The multi-colour version is really very 70's. It does look great on the grey boxes, though, probably better than a solid logo would have.

As a matter of fact, during a meeting of the Dutch Mac user group Klokhuis (http://www.klokhuis.nl/) last week, the multi-coloured Apple logo that hung on the Apple Benelux building was auctioned. It got sold for €100, eventually. It took some time before someone bid more than €1, though :)

There was a lenticular ad (3D sort of advertisement that changes based on your view of it)

It circulated San Francisco for about two weeks after the introduction of the Wallstreet PowerBooks. (The last Apple product to have the rainbow logo) The ad, on a little trading card attached to the front of a gay magazine, read, "All the GUYS in town are buying one!" You turned the card slightly and it read, "All the GAYS in town are wanting one"

Apple made them pull it quickly, because it wasn't sponsored. They were VERY rare. I also think there was a giant Billboard in San Fran with the introduction of the iMac that had a moving letter from "U" to "A"

I personally like the solid color better because every now and then I would be associated with gay pride. I have no problems with the lifestyle, just the association, people here in the Bible belt tend to "think differently".;)

How come they have never had one that well looks like an Apple, red, whiteish interior, etc?

I like the new solid apple myself. The old one was kind of gay.;)

The rainbow logo would fit a bit better for specialty products, such as an anniversary machine or a special edition machine.

Sort of lends that little bit extra class to a machine.

Solid colour is best, but I still have my 'classic' stickers somewhere (bottom of a box with other old Apple stuff - could be something valuable in there...).

I think the new 'G5' boxes will sport a different solid colour - Apple is recognizable for the shape of the logo, why not have different models in different logo colours? Would help differentialte the product line and give us all more stuff to buy The flavour iMacs all had a different colour logo to match the casing....and the new iMac has a silver logo on the front...

(wishfull thinking) 'I have all 5 iMac flavours, now starting on the PB and desktops'.

The rainbow logo had its time in the sun. The solid aqua logos Apple uses now are just better for new OS, and they can make them in different colors.

That said, I think this logo's pretty cool...

I voted for the solid Apple logo along with 79.01% others. The solid logo has a very impressive look, very 21st Century! ;)

That's what makes it so cool.

BTW- I have a rainbow sticker on my truck. I am straight, but am comfortable enough to have it on there. Plus, I'm too
lazy to put on a white sticker.

I like the new logo better, but the white sticker just isn't very cool.

I don't know why rainbow became synonymous with gayness.
It makes no sense. Rainbow makes more sense for a company
that wants to integrate a better operating system for the rest of us, irregardless of race, ethnicity, or any other class distinction. Apple made a computer for creative types, which again can be symbolized by the multicolor logo as there are more colors than one on an artist's tablet. Are you about to say all artists are gay for having a multicolored tablet? A rainbow shows just how diverse and unified the human culture can be at the same time. Hence groups like the rainbow coalition were formed to try to end racism. Now granted Macs may at times may appear more expensive than PCs, but in the long run they aren't, and they make great easier to access and learn educational tools than traditional PCs. Apple should go back to its roots and offer the rainbow colored logo again. Gayness preconceptions be damned. Our culture needs more openness than it is showing now. It was founded on immigrants and multiculturism. If we want a peaceful world free of terrorism, we need embrace the differences of all people and learn from them. Apple needs to show that it is open to that again. Think Different was not a bad campaign, and Apple should relive it again.

I believe that the rainbow flag became a symbol for the GLBT community because it brings the concept of the acceptance of diversity to mind: many colors, all standing together. There are many (sometimes conflicting) websites that discuss this, but here's one that does mention my interpretation (diversity as a core concept):

http://www.queerattitude.com/society/rainbow.php

Interesting that each color was given a "meaning" relative to gay pride.

Anyhow, having said that, I really prefer the solid-color one, which I do have on my car. It looks nice on the back windshield of my Focus ZX3, as a nice contrast to the (relatively) darker glass. Looks very sharp as the only sticker on my car, just like one would hope an Apple product would... :)

The "old skool" one just reminds me of Mork & Mindy... :D

Are you kidding?!?!?

Although the multicolored 'rainbow' apple logo is classic, there is no competition between it and the Solid Colored Logo. The Solid color logo is much better.

I like the multi-color logo better. The solid logo seems boring. Does Apple still include white logo stickers with the computers? It would be pointless to put one on a white iMac.

oh, and did I mention the connotations that go with rainbows?

I don't like it any more than y'all do, but they are there, and that is why apple switched to a solid color logo (I think).

I think each logo has its place. On the beige/platinum, and even the grey PowerBooks, the small multi-color logo looks fine. But I think making the multi-color logo the size of the solid logo on the G4 or other machines would be 'too much'.

I don't see Apple returning to the multi-colored logo. The solid color logo is here to stay. It's sad the the PC crowd have removed our options though!

This is the direction I was going...and there wasn't a "no strong preference" option on this vote (so I didn't vote). For some applications - - like the outside of the laptop/desktop, a solid logo is a nice look (and its cheaper to produce, too), but for software things inside the OS, sometimes the solid blue version looks good, but its always nice to have a little dab of color up in the uper left corner.

FWIW, I would like to see someone come up with a "barbershop poll" or "waterfall" effect on the rainbow colorations within an Apple logo, cycling through the colors.

I'm sort of on the fence on this one. In general, I think the solid color logo looks classier. And in the case of the modern products, with their smooth lines and translucency, it's the only way to go.

On the beige boxes, the color logo provided a splash of color that saved them from complete boringness, so it was better there, and in a 3D form like the one posted earlier it still looks cool.

So what I really wish is that Apple would use a bit of both. Stick to the current logo for most stuff, but that the old one would still be cool from from time to time (like in the corner of a black and white Think Different ad, for example).

I like both logi. But for the current product line the one color logo is better.

Does anybody remember the Newton logo? That was cool!

I still have some Newton stickers. I scanned them for anybody who's interested: :)

I don't believe "logi" is proper pluralization, you probably want to stick to words that end with "us". Could be wrong.

BTW, when taking this poll, how did I know there was going to be a discussion of the gay-rainbow thing?

I'll tell you why the rainbow is a symbol for the gay community: "Because gay means happy and happy means gay!" ;)

BTW, I've never seen a lesbian in person I found stimulating, but then I haven't lived in SF since i was six -- and I've never seen vniow :D

You want to know what I don't understand? Since when is a delta a lesbian symbol? Is wicca just more common in the lesbian community?

Why am I so far off topic? Why don't I start a new thread? Nah...

OT, I prefer the solid. It's way slick, and Apple needs to look more professional in today's slick image corporate world. I don't think gaeity has anything to do with it.

The solid logo should be used for Hardware and the rainbow for Software. I have always though that Apple software and their website should use a modernized rainbow logo like the one that pyrotoaster posted. Hardware should use the solid logo so it's color can be changed to match the case.

I personally prefer the rainbow logo but then again I am nostalgic like that. As for the gay connection, who cares? If having a computer with a small rainbow logo bothers you then you have issues.

Err...I'm actually bi. Heh, maybe I should actually start saying that now..

And no, I'm not a wiccan or know any for that matter, or know why people seem to think so..

Perhaps wicca is more common among lgbt types because it doesn't tell you you'll go to hell for being yourself. Just a thought.

Well, I don't know whether or not its a given that it is, I'm just curious where the whole triangle as a lesbian symbol thing came from. It's definitely a wiccan thing, and I don't say that just because it was on the arm of that chick from the craft when she was in Waterboy.

I tend to agree with this. You'll recall, Steve Jobs' explanation for dropping the multiple colors from the logo is that it's the shape that's their "swoosh", which was a reference to the Nike logo. You see the Nike logo in all sorts of different colors, depending on what it's attached to.

It's not the colors that makes it "Apple". Oddly enough, it's the "apple" shape that makes it "Apple".
