View Full Version : Should they remake The Ten Commandments?

I just thought of it today, how it would be awesome to have a really good, modern major motion picture remake of The Ten Commandments, with modern graphics and sound and stuff.
"Let my people go!" How cool would that be?
But who would play Moses?

I vote no. It's about time Hollywood stopped regurgitating its heritage and came up with new concepts rather than doing endless remakes and sequels.

Heston could still play Moses - he now looks about as old as they tried to fake age him with makeup back in the day.

Sure, they're more like guidelines anyway.

Moses with an M16 would not look good.

You mean, like this? Moses would just have to spend four days on the mountain top, and he could eat, earlier.

Instead of a remake, they should do a sequel. And in the spirit of one-upmanship in sequels (e.g. Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, etc.), it should be called The Eleven Commandments.

They did, kind of. It was an entirely underrated animation called "The Prince of Egypt"(1996). and actually mercifully undid the salience of the rather cheesy 50's one.

They should completely rewrite the 10 Commandments, maybe cut it down to 8.

Heston could still play MosesI can just see that. Forgetting his lines while holding the tablets up with one hand and a shotgun with the other.

Better yet...
Narrator: "And he saw that they did frolic and make merry and saw that they did make a calf of gold to worship upon. And he said unto them..."
Moses: "You can abide by these Ten Commandments when you pry them from my cold, dead hands."

The Ten Commandments have already been rewritten by Matt Besser (naughty but very, very funny (http://www.mattbesser.com/video_display.php?vid=commandments)).

I voted no. Hollywood could only screw up what is already a decent movie. They got no where to go but down with this one.

Remade with new actors but essentially the same script?
or remade it kinda like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1kqqMXWEFs)?

Looking at the remakes of Psycho and The Poseidon Adventure, I'd say no.
But since the thread is already in the Politics, Religion, and Social forum I'd say yes, the actual 10 Commandments need to be updated. I'm sure God would be ok with that as long as the main stuff stays similar. No killing, no stealing, no cheating. It has been a couple of thousand years though, things change. The Constitution changes with the times, so should religion.
Ideas, not belief. ;)

You can easily cut the 10 commandments down to the 2 commandments. George Carlin will show you how to easily do that!

Okay, I just saw "The Ten Commandments" on ABC.
Hoo boy.
It sure doesn't stand up well from what I remember seeing years ago. 'Course, I was ten years old at the time. ;)
Now it plays like a big-budget Ed Wood movie. There is absolutely no subtlety to it; everything, from the stilted dialogue to the hammy acting (particularly Heston's), is at the level of a comic book.
Should they remake it? Depends.
If you're an atheist and think this is nonsense anyway, what would be the point?
But if you're a believer, and religious movies are your cup of tea, then yes, you'd probably like to see a less pretentious, more sophisticated handling of the story.

I'm the former, not so much the latter. But I think there is a large contingent that views it for the nostalgia.
Do I think a remake could have potential? Yes. But, does it remind me of childhood (keeping in mind that when I was a kid I wasn't the former either)? Yes. It's the same reason I make sure to watch It's a Wonderful Life and Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown every Christmas season.

A couple of weeks ago TCM ran that Mel Brooks movie, "History of the World Part I." Not a lot of funny stuff in this film (Brooks playing a waiter at the Last Supper being probably the best bit), but another good one is Brooks as Moses, coming down from the mountain with three tablets. "I bring you 15..." (drops and breaks one tablet), "TEN commandments."
So it's already been done. ;)

How about The Ten Recommendations? For a less prescriptive age.

It was done last year as a TV movie/miniseries.

I know with movie budgets and actors it could probably be done well but then why not remake Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, The Wizzard of Oz and every other "classic" movie with modern effects and budgets?

The Wizard of Oz has been remade several times and the MGM one actually was a remake:eek: Some are more true to the book than the MGM one. The muppet one for instance.
Casablance I can't see redoing. What made it great was its timeliness, something that really caries over in the celluloid. Plus what special effects are there? What can really be added? A better looking plane taking off at the end?
Gone with the Wind? Maybe. Never seen it.
Edit:
Why is this even in Politics and Religion. Is it some sort of anti-remake heresy?

Sort of. The plot of the silent film of that name wasn't the same as the '39 movie, nor was it from the book.
When has a movie remake ever represented an improvement over the original? I can think of only a few, and those were remakes of mediocre films. Any filmmaker who tries to improve on a classic needs to have their head examined.

Okay, repeat after me:
Ocean's Eleven.
The Italian Job
Perhaps the Departed (although I am partial to the Hong Kong version)
Cape Fear
Black Cat
Assault on Precinct 13
and so on...
bingo buddy!

All of those remakes sucked, especially Cape Fear -- possibly the most pointless and unnecessary remake of all time. The balance of the films on that list were hardly classics (even the original Cape Fear wasn't a great film). Remakes of mediocre films don't count, but of course I said that already.

I think you misread me. I was calling IJ a blasphemer for saying it wasn't that funny. ;) I love Mel Brooks. Yes, even Men In Tights.
But not that movie. No that movie was awful. Just awful.
