Some informal tracking sounds like fun--to track personal progress, and for bragging rights, and to draw attention to what people missed who didn't make time for the game :) Like me :(
One method would be to just post a scoreboard screenshot.

awww I think you guys play the higher version of Halo than me:mad: I play version 1.02 and I'm guessing you guys 1.06 or 1.07. aww o well. Yeah and when some1 host they do have a very big advantage over every1. Cuz say u have a ping of like 67, thats good but it doesn't compare to host who has 0. Host should always win. If you don't win as host then that just means u suck to be honest. Halo isn't too hard to get good at when you play a lot online and beat the game on Legendary. Just remember 3 shot to the head with pistol is dead, 1 shot to head with snipe is dead, and always try and do combos. Like a gernade then pistol, or shotgun or plasma pistol then melee.
Yeah and for the xblaze thing its kinda not worth having cuz 1. at the moment Adium X does not support audio or video chat. And thats the main point of xfire....to talk to people when u play but with xblaze u can't. If any of u do play version 1.02 well I said it already but my name is {BTK}Bassy (BTK is a clan):)

Good advice on combs.
But I'll chime in and say that 67/1000ths of a second (1/15 of a second), while not irrelevant, is far from the difference between "sucking" and "winning." The ping advantage isn't quite THAT big :p
The ping advantage is one of numerous factors, from your mouse to your display to your framerate to your state of mind at the moment. Your skill level being of much greater importance than all of those generally.
Similarly, someone with 67 ping won't always beat someone with twice that. There's always variation in ping between players, but it's possible to win even so.

Yeah of course. I win against host all the time. But what I mean is if you have a decent host even if your really good the host still has an advantage on you. So when I say when the host doesn't win on his own server it doesn't means he sux but it means he should win. But becuz he didn't it means that if was in another server without advantage he'll do even worse. Get my point? Its like the people in the clan I'm in are all good. When we play in other servers together 1 of us beats the other and vice versa. But when 1 of us host, becuz they're already good without advantage, when they have host advantage they are likely to win. So take lancestraz as an example. He sounds like a good player, and I'm sure he is. But I bet he doesn't win as much as he does on other servers as his. So he might be good already but with host advantage he's likely to do even better by a lot being he has 0.:) Does this make sense?

yeah I would so I could show u all a few tricks:D but my CD key is for 1.02. And I'm probably gonna install Halo 2 Vista on my Intel Mac so no biggy. And I enjoy the friends I play with in the clan. I would have but I've just become a regular in version 1.02, so like a lot of people know me and I know all the good people and I like knowing that. If I do find a crack for version 1.07 I probs still wont cuz I'll have to build up my rep all over again. Although with my skill I could probs do it fast and get to know who the good people are fast:D lol. so no1 plays 1.02 I take it. O well. Any1 getting Halo 2 Vista? Ah ha. That's why you kept giving me the flag! Ha ha. I thought you where in some sort of killing frenzy and couldn't stand to cary around a sissy flag.
Oh, yeah. I have a question for you guys. When you're playing Halo and a ghost starts attacking you, does your mouse slow down?

Yep, I figured you could protect the flag better than me running thru the wrong porter. "killing frenzy"? :D (imagining myself dripping foam from mouth onto clenched mouse) Nah.
The only time I've gotten mouse slow ups is in modded maps or serious lag. However, I have gotten weird mouse behavior before when using a mouse and a laptop. Are you using a wired or wireless mouse?

Wired mouse with laptop.
Another problem with my mouse....
I installed BootCamp and Window on my computer; to get my mouse to work I had to update the firmware. Since then it feels different. And not in a good way.
Though this slowing down with ghosts was happening way before I installed Windows.

Hmmm...have you tried a different mouse from a different company? I don't know if this will help, but about 2 years ago a friend of mine had bad issues with a kensington mouse and his PC laptop. He had to disable the laptop's touchpad in order for the mouse to work correctly. I've also had issues with my dell laptop and a kensington trackball. I dont think the kensington software plays nice, which is a shame because on my old macs kensigton stuff ran great. My microsoft intelli mouse works better with my dell laptop, but occassionally the pointer freezes or behaves weirdly and I have to replug it in. But my main point is maybe contact tech support for your mouse, see if its a software conflict or borrow someone else's mouse and see if you still have issues.
Hope you can resolve it.

Another possibly for your slow up is your graphics card. Those plasma shots require a little more GPU. My PC had a GeForce 5200 FX and my Mac has a 9800 Pro. Not top of the line graphics cards at all and they struggle with hot burning, skin-melting ammo. What are you working with Lance (GPU and CPU)?

2.33Ghz C2D CPU and whatever GPU my MBP came with (ATI X1600 I think).
Next time we play I'll try dialing the settings back to see if it helps.

NewEgg and others have external USB Superdrives for $60-$70 or so. I'm not sure whether you can boot from them to install an OS or not, and I don't know what models are iDVD-friendly, but they should work for most purposes.

Sounds like you may have been accidentally blasted through a wall and triggered this "easter egg." (Though I have been blasted through a wall before and just fell forever without dying.)
carduser22
Jun 5, 2007, 11:41 PM
In reply to the post by Nagromme about being accidentally blasted through a wall, that is not likely (though not impossible) because when it happened we were out in the middle of a field (Blood Gulch), close combat, nowhere near a wall.
I looked the phrase "guardians in halo" up and it seems sometimes when you are fighting someone and are both near death, they can still kill you, even though they are dead because of lag. So technically, you were killed by the other person, but the guardians (some kind of force?) get credit for it. I do not believe it is a glitch in the game.
Also, when you die by "the guardians" I do not believe your death count changes.

Ok looks like no1 been talking for a while but anyway. I 4got last time to tell you guys this move. Not many people know it(mostly pros use it) like me ^^ .
Its the double melee. Some of you may already know it but hey w/e. Ok its pretty basic and mega easy, yet very very helpful in some situations. So here it is. Press "melee", "grenade", melee" do it fast and u can sometimes pull of a triple. This gives a 2 hit kill if proper use and works with all guns, but best with pistol or assault rifle.
A situation this could come in handy is when some1 is in front of you 1 v 1 and u melee them then when they turn away instead of having to wait to melee again u do the double so they don't get away becuz u hit them in the back. Another way is u could put a few shots in them 1st and just do the double melee head on and they drop dead. Hope this helps you guys game :D

It has no ping on the side of the server name. And my friends tell me it just retries and then says"unable to join the server". I have no firewall up or internet sharing on. I tried with ethernet cable too. I'm clueless. Any suggestions??:o
Mabye if you update to the newest version it might work.

You have no firewall on your machine? How about your router? Do you have in your router your ports in stealth mode? or do you just have your modem hooked directly to your machine?

Um oh yeah. I use a broadband router. Maybe that is my problem. Some1 else told me the other day that becuz I use a wireless router I have to do something called NAT forwarding?? When I go into the router settings online(its a Netgear Router so I think u have to type in the Netgear IP address which is soemthing like 192.168.0.1 or w/e and put the password etc. Then I see firewall settings but it just has something that says "Outbound services" Allow Always (default settings) and says WAN Users "Any" WAN Servers "Any" Log "Never". And has a tool bar which alows me to make changes like "add" delete" edit etc.
Next it has the exact same set up except this time it has "Inbound Services" and has "Block Always" (default) LAN Server IP address "any" WAN Users "any" Log "Never, then gives me the option to change these and so on.
I guess I'll try and see what this NAT forwarding is 1st b4 I try it but any info is appreciated  Just wanna figure out how I can host cuz as I said b4 my internet connection is pretty fast. I'm not sure but I think 16mb is faster than T1 which u need to host 16 ppl in Halo. So if it is faster that'll be easy on the ears of people yelling lag lag lag!! every 5 mins even when its a T1 connection. Thx :D

Why don't we set a time and meet on (IDIC)Spock's server(see below). I got on it a few times and they seem to have a lot of bandwidth and it is a dedicated server that is on all the time. He offered to change the map cycle and the gametypes if we want him to.
I'm a long time lurker on the mac rumors forums. I'm the leader of a clan that plays Halo and other games. We have a dedicated server for halo hosted through nuclearfallout (as well as UT2004 and CS: S). Feel free to play on our Halo server anytime you want as we rarely play Halo anymore so it's empty most of the time (it's up 24/7). It's a 16 player public dedicated server, hosted in San Jose, Ca, and has a fairly large map cycle rotation -- several maps of team based slayer and CTF, and a couple of king of the hill and race.
The server is named IDIC and has a direct IP of idic.nuclearfallout.net . I can change the map cycle and the gametypes if you wish (i.e. currently there are no tanks or shees on any of the maps in the cycle).

Hi budpam, I have TW cable internet in NYC, supposed to be 7mbps down / 512kbps up. Usually is a bit less than that in real world. I limit to 8 players because more than that tends to slow the server down for gameplay.

ok maybe I just got confused last night as it was midnight here in UK lol. But I think on that manual it said something about after making those changes click submit on the NAT table, but this router doesn't have NAT. And also the IP I was sending it to was the Static IP.....as that what it had said for me to type in. I also have on the WAn setup menu a button that says something about DMZ? and taking it off may be taking a risk and stuff. Usually I figure things out myself but this is a mystery ^^. Yeah and also I forwarded the port to 2302 which is what I use. Maybe I put the wrong static IP in. Cuz when it said write ur current IP adress after doing it manually I was confused whether it meant the new IP address they said that is meant to match my router's IP(almost) And I didn't know whether to put the old IP or the new 1. I think I tried both. I also tried with ethernet cable in and wireless as I all use is my 2.0ghz Macbook Core Duo. I dunno lol. I'll try again but I know my router doesn't talk about NAT and somewhere in that tutorial it mentioned NAT. Its the newer version of that router but it looks like similar settings so I'll try again. There are 3 ports that you need to forward, 80,2302, and 2303. Go back to the tutorial and follow it, except I wouldn't do it in the order they recommend, because they are going back and forth between Services and Firewall Rules. I would add/define all 3 services first(Halo1, Halo2, and Halo3(or whatever you want to call them)-which are just telling it which ports and which protocols you are going to use. Make sure you choose both udp and tcp for each port when defining these services...so if you can't choose both udp and tcp at the same time then you would need to add 2 service definitions for each port, meaning you might have Halo1,Halo2, Halo3, Halo4, Halo5, and Halo6 as defined services. Then I would add all 3 Firewall Rules next for each service that you defined(Halo1, Halo2...) I think you only need them added for inbound services, but I would add them to both inbound and outbound services.
You would start by choosing Halo1 as the Service, ALLOW always as the Action, your computer's ip address that is running the Halo server for the Send to LAN Server(something like 192.168.0.100), Any for Wan users, and Never for Log. Click Apply and it should bring up another page showing the NAT rules-if it shows the settings you just added for the Firewall Rules, go ahead and click submit and it should add it to the NAT table-if it does not show what you had just added as a Firewall rule, add it and then click submit. Do this for every Service you created in the first step. That should be it-close it and run Halo.
You could use DMZ and that would be the easiest, but it will open up all the ports to whichever ip address you choose(the computer ip running Halo). If there is nothing else on that computer and it is only used for Halo it shouldn't be a problem, but if you use it for other things it would be risky.
Make sure you don't have a Firewall running on the computer that is serving Halo, if it is, you will have to configure it to let traffic through on the Halo ports on it as well.
Hope this helps.
If you read all the way through the tutorial before you try it again, you will see what you are actually doing and it should be easier to understand. I don't personally like the way you have to forward ports on that router-it seems like they could just have a port forwarding section where all of the settings are in one place. Oh well, they didn't ask me, lol:D

OK. B4 I do this again I just want to be clear on everthing. I think the thing I'm confused about is the Static IP. It says to type the Static IP in the LAN section when u are adding the rule. So is the Static IP the address that Halo is going to? I'm confused. My Halo Server IP is 192.168.0.2:2302. I'm afraid to leave this info incase 1 of u try to hack me lol but I can't be bothered. Anyway thats my Halo IP but on the tutorial it doesn't say to type that in the LAN server when u are adding the rules on Inbound, it gives me the number to write which is my Static IP which is 192.168.0.136(If I found it correctly) PLz don't try and hack me........otherwise I'll have a surprise coming back towards u:D

I'm no expert on these things, but in case it adds to what you've been doing, here's how I would check the 3 IP addresses that I have needed in the past:
1. Local or internal IP address:
System Prefs > Network > Airport-or-Ethernet > TCP/IP > IP Address
2. Router's IP address:
System Prefs > Network > Airport-or-Ethernet > TCP/IP > Router
3. External or "real" IP address:
http://www.whatsmyip.org
I'm not sure what you mean by your static IP address. Your external address can either be static (never changes) or dynamic (changes sometimes) depending on your service provider. If it's dynamic, check the link in #3 any time to see the current one. Mine is dynamic but rarely changes.
In my experience you only need #1: that's the address to have your router forward ports to.
Good luck!

Sorry I'm just getting back to you-I won't be at my computer much until Monday. I would use the ethernet cable right now to keep things simple.
If the computer that is serving Halo has an ip address of 192.168.0.2, then YES, use that as the ip address in the inbound rules for every port when it says send to LAN server.
I don't know what device has the ip address of 192.168.0.136, but it shouldn't be needed. The ip address that is needed in the send to LAN server blank is the ip address of the computer that is hosting HALO.
BTW-don't worry about giving these ip address out, they are internal addresses that can not be seen by the "outside world"(the internet on the other side of your router).
Just tried again. I think maybe its becuz Halo1 port is 80 and I only have my laptop and that is connecting to port 2302....... I tried it wirelessly. It looks like it's talking about a static internal IP address. Maybe that's something you have to worry about with some routers. I've shut down my computer dozens of times and never had to worry about it. A static external IP is the thing your ISP gives you--or doesn't if you have a dynamic IP. Unless you're using something like no-ip.com, only the internal IP should matter for hosting. And I WOULD follow any steps you are given for it.

I tried playing halo last night, but everytime I was running, and pressed either the jump or use key, I would stop running, and have to press the forward key to get moving again. Anybody have a fix for this?

Assuming you've already tried the usual repairing disk permissions, yelling at the game and updating to the latest version of Halo; the only option left is to reinstall Halo.

I haven't played much in last couple of months, but when I do its usually a modded danger canyon map.
The tough part was getting a good time people could agree on. Some people play early, some late, some are on another continent.

Universal Binary. The original Halo was not made to run on intel macs and runs under rosetta. The UB version is supposed to give better performance on certain Ppc macs and make the game native under intel macs. Its like a $5 update, if you already have Halo.

Any new version may have bug fixes and is worth having.
I just tried Halo (latest version) in Leopard on Intel, and it seemed fine. I joined a server, and all controls (jump, use, forward) worked.*
Maybe try creating a fresh player profile?
* I did not see my old player profile or saved games. It's possible I never copied that data to this machine, but I think I did. Will investigate further.

The update is usually an installer, all you have to do is run it. As to whether it will make a difference (performance?) maybe dependent on your configuration. A description from the installer says:
Overall performance on Intel Macs has been improved by up to 25% over the original Universal Binary version, depending on graphics configuration.
According to the support pages it does fix some issues people have been having:
This update improves performance for PowerPC based systems and some Intel systems, fixes graphical errors, custom multiplayer game type issues and also allows the program to run properly from a case-sensitive drive. Version 2.0.2 also fixes an issue with the "A" key and incorporates a VSYNC fix.

Hmmm... if you are still having issues with movement and you repaired permissions and now updated. It could be some of the halo files got corrupted, which could require a reinstall.
Before you do anything like that make sure that in your settings none of your keyboard commands (like spacebar for jump) accidently got deleted or reassigned to a different key. I've had that happen to me in other games by accident (miss-key), by an update (had to reset to default to get everything working again), by my preferences getting corrupted (had to delete preferences file to return everything to normal). Its a small thing, but you may want to check that out first.
You said you checked the settings and "they were all at high" is this what you normally have them at or did the game default to this after the update?

Use disk utility in utilities folder in your applications folder. Verify and repair permissions. You may also want to verify that your disk is working well. If it is not you may have to boot from OSX install disk to repair it with the disk utility on disk.

First make a backup of your entire maps folder and set it to "read-only".
To use modded maps just move them into the maps folder (which is located inside the Halo.app, right click Halo and select "Show package contents", the maps folder is in "Contents>Resources>GameData").

You don't actually add a map, you're replacing an existing one.

On my system I moved only the maps I was replacing with modded maps into a new folder I called "regular halo maps". I also made another folder called modded maps, because there may be 3 or 4 different mods you play for like blood gulch. This way I just swipe the maps back and forth.

Anyone know if there's a way to retrieve serial info off your machine from the preferences... I've bought 2 Mac Halo copies (first disk cracked) but now can't find the stupid booklet with the serial to update to the Universal binary... and the game is now friggin over a 100 bucks on ebay... can't believe this. Amazon too...
Or has a copy they'd sell for a human price and not one billion dollars?
I don't understand why they can't just sell the universal digital file as a new copy, and charge a full price for that download. Annoying.

Yeah well, I don't have a macsoft.plist... only Halo prefs and installer.plist. And no I am not pirating the game, thanks. When I take those two files out of preferences folder, the game asks for serial, I put them back in... it launches fine. Installer has text edit info but usless, Halo prefs are blank even with Hexedit, plist editor.
