View Full Version : Trackpad freezing randomly

So this doesn't happen a lot maybe once a monce when I wake my iBook G4 from sleep and the trackpad will not work from anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute or two. Normally I just run my finger over it for some time and eventually it comes back.
First why is this happening?
And second will this issue get worse with time because my AppleCare is about 2 and half years old so if it is I will report it now but I don't want to wait a year and when it becomes a bigger issue be stuck with it.

Are you using a 3rd party trackpad app hack like iScroll?

Does it happen if you're logged in as another user? Create one to test, if needed.

well the thing is it would take me a long time to find out because this happens very rarely. I am just not sure if it is a hardware issue that will get worse over time

If it's that rare, I'm not sure I would worry about it.

Well, unfortauntely your alternatives are limited.

If you take it to Apple, I'm fairly certain they will hit you with the whole 'reinstall OS X' ************. Which will leave you right in square one. But you can try that yourself, but ultimately it doesn't tell you much.

Trying another user, well that will at least tell you if it's related ONLY to your normal login, or if it's a system wide, thing. A reinstall of OS X should follow that if it's system-wide. If it still does it on a vanilla install, then it's hardware.

If you have "Ignore accidental trackpad input" checked in your preferences, I've found that OS X doesn't always do a good job of identifying "accidental" and in essence ignores desired input. After unchecking that box, I've had no problems with my trackpad "freezing".

I agree. This "feature" on my G4 Powerbook is a real PITA. Things work much more fluidly without it checked :-)
