Apple announced via a press release (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/04/09ipod.html) today that it has sold its 100 millionth iPod. The first iPod was sold five and a half years ago, in November 2001, and since then Apple has introduced more than 10 new iPod models, including five generations of iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano and two generations of iPod shuffle.

“At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.”

The iPod has also sparked an unprecedented ecosystem of over 4,000 accessories made specifically for the iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker systems, and more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer iPod connectivity.

“I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere,” said Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion. “I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating.”

100 millionth iPod. That's cool - now start cranking out computers that people actually want to see.

We've gone about 6 months and the only "new computer" we've seen was a dual quad-core processor machine that very few people will buy....

Yeah, just like the DRM free announcement that came on the heels of Apples DRM free music. MS just said they would sell it soon, not that they even had them in the stores yet. Tomorrow MS will announce that they will sell 100 million Zunes by the end of the year.

This is great!

The iPod is what got me to buy my first OS X system. I had been a Mac classic user for years, however I wanted to experience iTunes and the iPod in their native settings (Mac OS X), I really liked it, and haven't looked back since!

The iPod Halo is a great thing, I wish there was concrete evidence showing how many thousands of Mac systems have been sold because of the iPod.

I have purchased (some as gifts) 6 iPods.

Thread 500 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=500). And really, you never know if something is going to succeed or fail until it does, in my opinion. Which is why, though I do criticize those who say the iPhone will fail drastically for reason X or Y, I don't yell out that it will definitely succeed either.

100 million iPods is a lot though, and it makes me worry about the environment: how many have been thrown away? (I'm not only worried about the chemicals in them, but the space they take up as well).

I just had a crazy thought: say out of the 100,000,000 iPods sold, 50,000,000 have been thrown away. What if all those were used to create a supercomputer?

The rates still need adjustment for acceleration of the rate of sale. Though for the first few years the iPod probably sold less than 38 a minute (probably less than 10 a minute in the first year or two!), it probably now sells, say, one a second, or perhaps 50 a minute. Or more.

I was humbled reading many posters' responses that were about the tech specs and how it wasn't revolutionary... they had some very good points, and yet this was the most runaway hit the world has ever seen.

Awesome!

Though :apple: is treating the iPod like the ugly, unwanted stepdaughter now that cute baby iPhone is about to pop out. I actually considered buying a PSP just to have a proper widescreen video player! I mean, a PSP... HONESTLY!

It annoys me a bit to know (well not "know," but come on!) that :apple: is sitting on a widescreen iPod in order to boost sales of the iPhone. June can't come fast enough.

I'd love to know total sales of Sansa, iRiver, Creatives, and Zunes :p

three 3G 20GB iPods ( all still work nicely) The batteries have all been replace (easy to do and $17 CND each)
one 4G 40 GB iPod
one silver shuffle

3 iPod nanos as gifts

1 white shuffle from the bank as a gift.

We will be buying 5 iPhones as a family when they come out to replace our iPods. Expensive yes, but I don't care. I love the features and especially the simplicity !!

Will sell off the iPods or use them as portable storage HD's.

It is understandable. The iPhone is obviously a big deal from a R&D standpoint, and a new iPod prior to its release would very likely undercut sales. Look for a new iPod late summer or early fall after the initial iPhone hype subsides.

These guys know what they are doing.

I've had 5 ipods

2 40 GB (3rd gen?) models that I wound up giving away and one of the recipients subsquently breaking it.

2 60 GB (5th gen?) that I still have, one of which I use in bedroom with "Hi Fi", the other is kind of collecting dust (I thought I lost one, bought a replacement, and found the "lost" one..)

1 orange shuffle--I use this every day--amazing to realize that this is what I really need--abolutely convenient, basically pick a playlist (in my case, an artist) per week and I'm pretty much set.

The only bad thing about the ipods--the ear buds. I recommend that everyone gets one of those Shure E2s. Will significantly ehance your listening pleasure.

It looks like Apple has sold more than 11 million iPods in Q2. This is another Q2 record, of course.

Q2 2006: 8 526 000 units

Q2 2005: 5 311 000 units

Q2 2004: 807 000 units

Q2 2003: 78 000 units

Q2 2002: 57 000 units

Quite impressiv numbers, I think.

I bet the 2nd 100 millionth iPod ships in less than 3 years.

I hope the uptake for iPhone is close to the iPod experience.

I found something technically interesting on one of the accessory pages. This is a device that plugs into the dock port and converts to a firewire plug. The more recent iPods no longer even support Firewire data transfer, even through adapters!

"The tiny PocketDock FireWire is an indispensable iPod accessory that lets you connect the iPod's dock port to a standard 6-pin FireWire cable.

When you're on the road with your iPod, listening to your favorite hits, you may unexpectedly want to connect to another Mac or PC — to exchange files, or maybe just to charge the iPod's battery. When you need it most, you'll probably find that you didn't bring the special iPod docking cable — it's at home connected to your computer. The PocketDock is the elegant, simple solution to this common problem.

This PocketDock is compatible with the following iPods:

* 3G iPod (touch-wheel with four buttons in a row)
* 4G iPod (click-wheel)
* 5G iPod (video) — supports FireWire only for charging, not for syncing.
* iPod photo
* iPod mini
* iPod nano — supports FireWire only for charging, not for syncing.

"

I'm on #2 myself:

#1 was the ORIGINAL 5 gigabyte, scroll wheel iPod. It is now on display as a relic in my home. Still works...

Next iPod will be when Apple puts iPhone features into the iPod (mainly, widescreen and multi-touch).

I've only bought one. I bought the 40GB 4G the day it hit the Apple Store shelves. It was replaced 3 times (*mutters* stupid unreliable 1" HDDs *mutters*) but it's the model I'm still using today! The AppleCare ran out in August and I've been taking extra-good care of it. In light of some SD Card hacks on hardmac.com, I might be able to revive it if the Hard Drive dies again... though the thought of a wide/touch-screen iPod is mighty alluring...

I'm on my second - I bought a 15GB 3G, and replaced it with a 30GB video when the HD was failing (just after Christmas after the 5G's came out). Then this past Christmas I bought my girlfriend a nano.

I will probably be buying a widescreen model in the largest size available when they come out. I can't get an iPhone until they up the capacity and iron out the inevitable problems (not that I expect it to be bad, but all 1st gen products need a little time in the public before the problems surface).

The iTunes Store has sold over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over 1.3 million movies, making it the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store.

I was wondering about the stats on the number of music, shows and movies downloaded.

I saw an article a while back that iPod's weren't at all used for video.

I'm using it for video. I don't always watch on the small screen but I have the dock hooked up s-video to my projector. I also use it upstairs with the composite video cable.

Great job Apple!

My only iPod is a 20 Gig 2nd gen that still runs perfectly though I must confess it doesn't get that much usage as I invariably have my laptop with me.
It will probably be retired when I get my iPhone but that won't be until it comes out as a 3G phone which I suspect will take a little while, possibly 2nd or 3rd generation.

Just to clarify, color wasn't added until "4.5G" I had the very first 4G iPod... a 40GB model with a monochrome screen. My fiancee got a 30 GB right before they upgraded to color. D'oh! Oh well. Not that color is THAT big of a deal. It still playes music and syncs with iTunes, which is what she bought it for.

I think you're mistaken, I think that's correct that a quarter of us Apple fans have had 5+ iPods. Here's my list:

6/03-6/04 10GB 3G, HDD broke after 51 weeks
9/04-1/05 10GB 3G, HDD broke just outside of warranty
3/05-10/05 60GB Photo, Sold to buy 5G
10/05-3/06 60GB 5G, Sold because I wasn't using it
5/06-9/06 4GB 1G Nano, Lost

It's not hard to believe at all. I personally know of at least 3 people that would answer this poll as 5+. Lots of people always upgrade when a new model comes out, plus they're also very popular gifts during the holidays and for birthdays. I currently own 3 myself (nano, video and shuffle), plus I've purchased at least 3 other iPods to give as gifts over the years.

Does that average 38ish iPods a minute for 5 years?

um, not sure if my math is dead on but....

One iPod sold every 1.715904 seconds. These are my numbers...

5 full years = 1825 (one was a leap year) + 1 = 1826

then there is the full months of Novemeber (but I'm sure the ipod wasn't released Nov 1st) December, January, February, March and the first 9 days of April. = 160days

so, ipod was been on sale for 1986 days (give or take)

1986 days = 47 664 hours = 2 859 840 minutes = 171 590 400 seconds

100 000 000 ipods sold in 171 590 400 seconds = one ipod sold every 1.715904 seconds.

am I wrong here?

Oops, I voted wrong :D I currently have 2 iPods, I've bought 3.

iPod 3G 15gb
iPod Mini 2G 6gb
iPod Shuffle 2G

Funny too, as they've held less and got smaller, I've liked them more. Haven't used my mini at all since getting a shuffle. The way you just plug in the thing, press "auto-update" and you have music on a clip, just incredible.

I honestly don't know how they're going to improve the Shuffle for me. I don't need a screen with 1gb of music, I've never even filled it (despite a 16gb iTunes library)! Just keep switching to another playlist I like.

An iPhone minus the phone bit would probably be next iPod. Whenever that happens!

Now who would give this a negative vote?
Here's to the next 100 million Apple, congratulations!

Honestly, I'd say I'm disappointed. 100,000,000+ iPods and we've got something that has a small screen, moderately heavy, plays a limited format of movies, and many people complain about replacement/repair costs. I'd say Apple could have done better, much better.

Now, before I get fellow Apple people flipping out and screaming, it should be noted that I do love my iPod anyway and I am certainly glad I have it. However, I am no longer impressed by tiny revisions and form factors that are the same for over a year with almost no drop in price (also see: mac pro). A second thing to note, I KNOW that Apple is in it to make money and not impress us with high technology at a low cost. It goes without saying.

So at the end of the day: 100,000,000+ iPods and nothing jaw dropping about them. Bleh.

And no, I didn't vote negative for it.

Wouldn't be surprised if they reach 1 Billion sold in the next 5 years. That first 100 Million was the hard part. I'm sure it's going to be a lot more sooner faster now that the iPod is the defacto standard for most listeners.

I think the new 1GB clip-on Shuffle has really changed my life. Looking forward to the true widescreen "mini-HD" 640 x 360 (one third HD res) 120GB Video iPod this Fall. ;) Could be another seminal moment in commnuications paradigm shifting consciousness. With a portable screen that large, the device can start to become an honest replacement for TV among those on the go. No doubt multi-touch (http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/) will play a serious role in that success just as it will with the iPhone (http://multi-touchscreen.com/iphone.html).

CompUSA was the place to buy for a long time. They had a replacement program (they called it TAP) and it was also a "technology upgrade" plan. The way it worked was you bought an ipod and when and if there was a new one with more features that became available, you just brought in your old one and pay the difference. The plan was $29 and it was a 2 year deal. Little did they know that Apple would be releasing new models every 6 months or so and for the same or less money. There was only 2 times I had to pay a $100 difference. For the 2nd and 4th ones I got.

After that, because the prices remained the same (or cheaper), I would just walk in with the old and walk out with the new with nothing wrong with the ipod I just turned in! I was amazed that no one cared. I would always go to the same store because they all knew me and I wanted to stay where I was well-liked.

Of course, I never could keep my old one but I didn't care because I was upgrading for just $29 each time. I believe on the last couple of ipods I paid $39 but by then, CompUSA changed their policy and didn't allow it anymore... I did the same thing with my Cinema Displays, too! Believe me: the rush of getting a newer generation ipod for nothing is awesome but walking in with a 14month old 23" Cinema Display and walking out with a new alluminum job for NOTHING is just about out-of-this-world mind-blowing...

About my 'pods:

1) Original 1G 5GB - bought 11/12/01 -- my 36th birthday -- $399 (+$29 TAP)
2) 1G 10GB - $100 difference (+$29 TAP)
3) 2G 10GB - $0 (+$29 TAP)
4) 2G 20GB - $100 (+$39 TAP)
5) 3G 30GB - $0 (+39 TAP)
6) 3G 40GB - $0 -- stopped buying TAP here.

7) 1G 5GB refurbished at some point for a friend from Apple ($199)
8) 5.5G 80GB for wife ($299)
9) 2G Shuffle for wife ($79)
10) 2G Shuffle for myself ($79)
11) 5.5 30GB for my tax guy($249)

About $1650 over 5.5 years for 11 ipods! Crazy!

Displays:

1) Original style 22" Cinema Display $1,999 (+$109 TAP)
2) Original 23" HD Cinema Display $0 (+$109 TAP)
3) Original 23" HD Cinema Display w/Aluminum Enclosure $0 (didn't by TAP on this one as I was told policy was changing.)

$2217 for 3 Displays!

Of course, I never could keep the ones brought in so it's not like I had 3 displays at once... it was like I was renting displays for on average 15 months for $109! I miss TAP!!!!

Between the super expensive ones sold at $599 and the $79 ones, I'm guessing the average for a 'pod is about $250 --

With that average, 100,000,000 ipods sold is $25 Billion!!! What a staggering amount of cash!

Nothing scientific about the figure, but just a guess... thoughts?

I just had a crazy thought: say out of the 100,000,000 iPods sold, 50,000,000 have been thrown away. What if all those were used to create a supercomputer?
I thought of this too, once. I'd like to see it tried just for kicks. I know it won't be efficient but still... ;)

I have bought about four or five iPods but I have this funny preference of buying broken ones to see if I can fix them. It's just more fun and challenging that way (and I can help others fix theirs). Buying a new one is just too easy! :o

You dropped a few zero's it is 300,000,000. Plus you have to remember that iPods are sold world wide and that population 6 billion and as we have seen most people who buy ipods bought more then one in 5 yrs.

So the total population of people who buy MP3 plays is far less then 100 million. I bet what we are about to see is the MP3 market is now saturated. You will begin to see a much smaller number of new people buying iPods and the total sales more flat and more of people upgrading or replacing what they have.

It took Apple about 5 yrs to reach this point verse Sony with the walkman which took about 10 yrs to hit saturation. But MP3 players were for sale for about 2 to 3 yrs before the Ipod so industry took it about 7 to 8 yrs before the market saturated.

For this reason is why apple came out with the phone, and appleTV, they need to create a new growth market for themselves because we will not continue to see double digit growth in Ipod sales in the future.

Not to start a debate but to clarify diehardmacfan's intended point (as I see it) is NOT to say that 100,000,000 people have been the purchasers of all the iPods in the world, but help people visualize how many iPods 100,000,000 are, i.e. 1/3 of the entire population of the United States ;) (btw in his/her example it shows they obviously know that the pop of the US is ~300M since that is the required number to make the example work (: )
