Yes, but also for other things as well, like Santa Rosa, speed bumps... My 1.0Ghz eMac is OK for now, and not yet 4 years old, which I consider to be a good lifespan. I want whatever it is that I'm waiting for to be pretty awesome.

Yes. But mainly because I assumed updates to the hardware would coincide with the release of Leopard. If that is still the case, then I will still wait for Leopard. But if they update hardware before the release of Leopard, I will just go out and get Leopard separately...

Yeah, I got one in March. I actually had wanted to wait for Leopard but ended up needing one immediately for work. Obviously now there's no worry about having "missed out" on Leopard and yet the delay still annoys me.

A big yes for me - hence the pending in my footer. The wife didn't want me buying my mini while the laptop still served my needs and then have to upgrade the OS at a later date. I figured I could wait until Q1 or Q2 for it and possibly get the C2D and more memory with the hardware upgrade that's bound to happen also.
Note to Apple - it's money in the bank when you offer a C2D, 1GB, Leopard equipped mini.:)

That was my stance as well.
Santa Rosa and the Spring release seemed to be quite ideal.
I am also likely to wait for hardware updates instead of Leopard but I'm not sure how significant Santa Rosa is going to be.

Yeah. I think we'll both enjoy the result of our patience. There aren't too many things that I do that my eMac is that bad at that I actually do. It can't run my external 20" monitor at full resolution when I try to play video on that screen, so I have to reduce the resolution to 800x1200 and it's fine, and that's higher resolution than the video anyway. The only realy downside is having to switch the resolution. It's very sluggish with 10MP pictures in iPhoto, and compressing video, well, that's slow. It also doesn't have a DVD burner.
But still, it's fine for now. And with a baby being born roughly 3-7 weeks, I don't need to be spending extra money on electronics right now.

I don't upgrade the OS the moment it hits the streets (I'm happy to let others do the bleeding ;)), so my upgrade decisions are based more on hardware evolution. I'm holding off on new Mac purchases until I see some new iMac specs and/or designs, and the old 12" PowerBook isn't going anywhere until I see a sub-notebook replacement from Apple. The Leopard delay gets a big shrug from me. I'm a lot more annoyed by the stock market's reaction. If Microsoft dropped this much every time they delayed an OS upgrade delivery, MSFT would be worth $0 today!

Yeah. I was hoping that I'd be able to wait through 2 more upgrades to hardware and Leopard's introduction so that I'd get my new computer with 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 (or whatever) so some kinks would be worked out. I was also hoping this would all be in place by the end of the summer, but obviously that's not going to happen. Still, no biggie. I can wait until the winter or early next year (unless I'm moving out of the US).

Haha, same here. I was waiting for the exact same thing. It got me thinking now on what to do. It pretty much depends on how good the update is. If the update is really good I might just go ahead and bite the bullet and get Leopard afterwards.
If it is a lackluster update I might wait for the update after that and hold myself over water with either an iMac or a MB that then goes to my Mum.
Really not sure I have to admit.

I've been waiting to replace my 12" PowerBook that I sold in August. The delay does not bother me. Something better will be out by then anyways, and I can save more money to afford it. Still, I am seeing the positive in this delay. Leopard will have no excuse not to be solid.

I was planning on a Mini after Leopard came out. I'm not in too big of a hurry so no big deal but I am interested in iWeb's updates.
I figured that by buying a Mini I'd be saving on iLife and Leopard. I guess it depends upon when iLife is released and what the changes to iWeb are.
Whatever the case, my 12" PB is going strong and maybe this way there will be a hardware update as well.

I was actually unsure, I have been planning to buy a Mac Mini for a couple weeks now and just trying to get my funds up. I probably would've just waited for the next update and if that was with Leopard, great, if not, oh well I'm buying a copy for my MacBook Pro anyway so I'll just use it with my Mini too.

Bottom line, you're a moron if you're waiting for an OS update to buy an entire computer, especially a Mac. Just doesn't make sense, dollars vs. time-wise. If you need a new computer now, buy it now and buy the OS later (or just get a copy from a friend). If you don't need one now.... well, why would you buy an entire new computer to get an OS update when you can just buy the OS? You either need one or you don't; the argument of "well i kinda need one so i figured i'd get one when the new os came out..." comes from the kind of people that are swayed easily by car dealer ads stating "Buy now, this sale won't happen again!" In other words, idiots.

The OS release often comes with hardware-specific features. Things like Quartz, Quartz Extreme, and Core Image effects only ran on hardware with certain capabilities, so waiting for an OS to be released is very much about making sure you'll be able to use everything you get.
I was waiting because I wanted a computer I knew Leopard would be designed for.

I was waiting for an update on the iMac to either move it to the mobile Santa Rosa platform, or (preferably) to be migrated to Intel's desktop architecture (should save on cost and increase performance/upgradeability, although it would generate more heat.) I figured it was going to happen at the same time as Leopard, but would have waited for the iMac upgrade even if Leopard came first.
Not to mention that when Leopard comes out, I'll end up getting the "Family Pack" anyway for 3 computers; so buying the iMac before Leopard and the new iLife won't really cost any extra. (Assuming they keep the family pack, that is.)

Hey there
I would just go ahead and buy one. I got sucked into the whole waiting thing when I was thinking about buying a MBP last December - should I wait until March etc etc. But I have learned that you could be waiting and waiting and waiting - I was told over a year and a half ago not to buy a new mac because they were replacing the OS. I listened. And waited. And then in December 06 I thought - this is ludicrous. There will ALWAYS be something better a few months away. And I've had a gorgeous MBP since December and I love every minute of using it.
Why deny yourself something you are looking forward to getting? I don't think there'll be an update on MBPs until October when Leopard comes out but then again it might be sooner it might be later.
My vote is just don't wait unless you know 100% that a product is going to be released because it's been announced. If the product does what you need now then that's a reason to buy. If it doesn't do what you need now then you wouldn't even be thinking of buying it. Now I'm out of the waiting game I just don't understand it at all. When I think back to how I was thinking it seems really odd!

I originally thought it would be good to wait, but it didn't really make sense in the long run. I only have my MBP right now, and plan on getting a Mac Mini as a media hub (which the MBP is doing right now...). No point having Leopard on one computer and not the other. So I'll be better off just getting the family pack down the road. Even better if I decide to get one of the new iMacs within the next year or two.
I am, however, waiting for an upgrade to the Mini. I'd like to get the C2D right from Apple. I could install my own processor I suppose, but I'm still fond of warranties.

Once again, the poll has too few options. I'm looking to buy an iMac, and I'm waiting for an upgrade. Before the delay announcement, before the rumors, i thought Leopard micht be arriving somewhere about now - and that would be a reason to buy my new iMac. But now, an imac hardware upgrade is just as good - and if the iMac was updated two weeks ago it would probably have been fine too.
So I voted undecided, but the answer should be 'Yes, or any other upgrade'.

Yes. And, I'm still waiting.
Also:
Waiting for faster iMacs. Cheaper Mac Pro's. And, a Mini with a Core2Duo and dedicated video chip.
Combine those with the release of Leopard, and Apple will get some money from me. Probably at least 2 systems.
Until the above happens, no money for Apple.

I'll be buying it eventually without doubt. But there's very little that appeals to me yet, especially for 130 euros or so. (Plus probably 20-30 euros to re-upgrade to QuickTime Pro). Time Machine is nice, but it's not something I'd use every day. Spaces might be useful, I'll need to try it. Other than that, I can't even remember all 10 features which Jobs mentioned.
To be honest, I nearly laughed when one of the top 10 features of Leopard was 'everything in the box', such as Boot Camp. So one of the hitlist features of Leopard is they haven't dropped previously released functionality? Yikes.
That's why I'm curious what people are so excited about. Has something been leaked that I don't know about, or are people waiting for the 'secret features'?

I was waiting for Santa Rosa and Leopard/iLifo '07 so I would not feel the need (not actually need, just feel the need ;) ) to upgrade anything for a long time.
The Time Machine software looks pretty cool, as do the core graphics and core audio stuff. So I would not really want to buy right now expecting to have better/faster chips and better/faster OS just a few months away.

A little off topic, does anyone know if the .edu store will be having any specials coming up? I know that :apple: has offered ipod vouchers over the summer the past couple of years, but any word on anything concrete time- and product-wise?

I just bought a 17' MBP in early March but am waiting for an iMac.
The current MBP is an awesome system and there are not too many potential updates that I really find significant at this time. The iMac could potentially gain more from a processor update. The system that needs to be updated most is the Mini....if it had the specs of the iMac (minus the display, of course) I would have a couple of them.
Leaopard will be great, but Tiger is still the best OS available right now. I saw no need to wait because I already have other systems that will benefit from an upgrade.

Hmm, well I suppose I don't NEED a new computer. I need food, clothing and shelter. But I want a new Mac, and I want that Mac to have Leopard. Let the power of the consumer liberate your mind! :D
I certainly wasn't saying that the consumer doesn't have the power to wait for Leopard before buying a new Mac. I was simply pointing out that such consumers are morons.

That's a bit harsh.
Here's the way I see it. Waiting until a computer has what you want before you buy it is never a bad idea.
If you want certain features out of your computer, then by all means, wait until it has them before you spend your money.
If I don't desperately need a computer at this moment, and want to wait until it has Leopard, then there's no reason not to. It would actually do two things. First, it saves me from having to purchase Leopard separately. So, I save some money there. Second, it also means that I may likely get a system which has been updated by then. Since Apple usually ups their system specs at the same price, then I may get a slightly better computer and the newer Leopard OS for the same price that I'd get the lesser system with Tiger now.
Sure, the current specs and Tiger are fine. But, if you don't have to buy a system today, waiting until you get a little more for your money is never a bad idea.
If I were to buy today, then I'd get the current system and Tiger. Then, when Leopard comes out, it would be a minimum of $129. Then, the next iLife, and that's $70.
So, if I wait, I automatically save nearly $200. And, I will likely get some minor bumps in the system specs as a bonus.
If you desperately need a computer, then sure, buy today.
If you don't desperately need a computer, then what's the harm in waiting until it has what you would like included?
I already have 3 Macs at my disposal. Two of them running Tiger. I see no harm in waiting for Leopard to buy my next machine. The nice thing is that that machine would then feel like I got something a little different.

I would never wait for software. Software is upgradable. I am waiting for hardware.
Since my graphite iBook SE has lasted me seven years (currently running Panther), I hope my future Macbook will last me just as long.
I don't care about processor speed or bus speed or anything like that. I just don't want my future Macbook to be saddled by the damn Intel GMA 950, when the next model may have that fancy new X3000 thing. Thus, I wait and watch.
The earliest I can buy the computer is mid-May, so...that's pretty darn close to the next projected update of the Macbook anyway. Thus, I wait.

I hate to be the grammar police, but it shoudd be were without an h!
And I agree with Fleur. I'm finishing school and need to replace a 4 yr old pbook. Right now I'll just wait for hardware updatse and purchase Leopard later.
I hate to be a grammar cop, but it should be updates rather than updatse.
I need to upgrade my systems also and was waiting for Leopard. Now I hear the Imac is due for an appearance change and maybe processor upgrade as well. I'll continue to hold off to see if there's any hardware improvements but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for Leopard when it should be included as part of a new computer purchase.

No, and I just bought a 17" iMac for my wife, and it is more than adequate. I have never seen the sense in waiting. If you need it now, then buy it now. There will always be something new, usually something you don't need (want maybe, but not need).

The proper name for the computer is "iMac", not "Imac".
Proper grammar would also include "...to see if there are any hardware improvements..." instead of "...to see if there's any hardware improvements..." This is because "there's" expands to "there is", and "...to see if there is any hardware improvements..." is not grammatically correct. (You are speaking of "improvements" in the plural, so you should use the plural "are" instead of the singular "is".)
:D (Sorry, couldn't resist adding to the theme.) :p
This post meant in jest. Don't take it seriously. But feel free to rip on any grammatical errors in my post.

I was waiting but my G5 iMAC PPC keeps hitting the HD wall and is way too slow (low 512 RAM). I have loved the look of a MacPro since the silver one came out, glad I was able to hold out for Intel and easy upgrade ability of the current machine. Just finished dropping my 3 grand this week. I'll just get the new OSX early next year after all the bugs are crushed. :D

I was waiting for Leopard, but it really had more to do with the fact that I figured June-ish would bring a release of some new/updated hardware, (Santa Rosa, etc...) so I figured I'd get upgraded with all the new stuff at once.
(hardware + software)
I'm still undecided on if I'll wait or not. (being a student, it would be nice to get it all included, rather than spend more money later)
But honestly I don't think I'll be able to hold out that long, our Fall semester starts in August so waiting till October would be waiting 1/2 through the semester and being a Digital Media student, the old 667mhz powerbook is getting a bit of a pain to use, as is the Powermac Duel 1GHZ.
Anyhow I guess we'll see how things play out.

Was waiting but now I have a different reason for buying (business reason) so I will get a new MBP when they arrive.

Yeah, and the two things I absolutely hate are waiting and wasting money! This is torture!
I don't think it's possible for :apple: to make this any more inconvenient for students. October? Come on! That overpriced iPhone should have been pushed back.
