Last time the satelite was on the web as well, i think nbc or something that came up the last minute, no worries there will probably be a webcast.

This is the exact same thing that happened with the launch of the Music Store. There probably will be a crappy life stream from MSNBC or something, with an Apple stream afterwards. :(
At least we'll have something.

If there event is broadcast via satellite, there will usually be webcast too.

I read somewhere that they won't be a webcast.
However I am sure it can be seen in Europe.
The Germain techies will be seeing it by satellite.
We need the the European satellite details.

Sorry, you can't see the keynote with DirecTV dishes, you have to have one of those big dishes.

OK,
Anyone going to be showing the broadcast in Vancouver, BC. I'll bring the coffee and some Timbits :)
Serioiusly .. perhaps if there is enough interest amoung Mac Heads we could split the costs of renting a small facility to watch.
Ten bucks a piece for Steve's show, a double-double and a Maple Dip.
Its not like you are going to be working .. your just going to be MADLY clicking refresh on your brower window all Monday morning. Just take the morning off :)
Email if you are interested!

I have SKY Digital through Digital Satellite here in the UK - can I pick this up any way?

Jun 17, 2003, 10:17 AM
I doubt it, is that like a TV service or what? If not you might.
I hope there's a webcast, but either way I won't be there to find out. So I am hoping there's a stream afterwards.

Folks, "Digital" satellite subscribers (myself included) will NOT be receiving this (barring unannounced rebroadcasts). Digital satellite TV works on a single-satellite system (ie, your dish is always pointed to one satellite ... yes, there is more than one satellite up there but you can't just point your dish at any arbitrary satellite position and expect to get anything) and only with compressed digital streams.
This is being broadcast on the older analog satellite system. That's those big 6-foot-wide (2m for the rest of you) dishes you see in some peoples' back yards and on the top of buildings. This is 100% incompatible with all digital satellite equipment.
The following services are a quick sample of digital services that will not be seeing the keynote (unless MSNBC or CNN or someone decides to broadcast it):
DirecTV
Dish Networks
SKY Digital
Any Digital or Analog Cable
Over-The-Air Antenna
If you have any of these, this article does not apply to you. If you don't have a honkin' huge white round thing in your yard or caving in your roof, this does not apply to you.
End Public Service Announcement.

Hmmmm....
for those millions of Directv (what i have), Echostar subscribers, and even cable households, wouldnt it be great if the speech was covered in full, live on TechTV? MSNBC and CNN would breakaway to other news and make it shorter.
I seem to remember in years past some keynotes being covered live by TechTV, but none from the WWDC.
Anybody have any contacts there to ask about this?

come on, someone needs to webcast it fromt he satelite stream, or broadcast it on TV would be better, I could watch 36" keynote :) ahh that would be nice...
maybe we should all e-mail someone at MSNBC to get them to do it again... but this time in quicktime format :D

So just to clarify - they're still planning on showing the broadcast at the Apple Stores, correct? I have to know so I can see how badly my wife will kill me if I pick up a 970 Powerbook right then. (Hm - I guess as long as I can put the old one on eBay, maybe I won't get to dead....)

Why wouldn't Apple want to webcast this?
They've been hyping this show. They must know we want to
see Panther/New Hardware...
Am I missing the bigger picture?

On the last apple happening (itunes4) there was a good broadcast on internet. It took me 5 minutes to find it:) So don't worry. There will be a broadcast for this bigger hapening too. Just have a good look around and you wil surely find a stream. There is a german site http://www.mac-tv.de/ that will broadcast it. But it's asking a small fee.

Also, the satellite stream is AUDIO only and in GERMAN.
So unless TechTV gets it we are all hitting the refresh button next week.

Not that it matters too much, but shouldn't that be 10am PDT (not PST)?
For places that do not go on daylight savings time, if they tune in at 10am PST (UTC-8), they will miss the first hour of the keynote. PDT is UTC-7.

Of course, this stream will not be in German. How should this work? They are sending an audio stream of a translation??? No, no, no, it's the official audio stream in English.

1. There are a lot of developers who paid a lot of money to go to WWDC. Part of that package is the keynote. To say to these people "well, now everyone will get to see the keynote" would tick a lot of people off. Yeah, they go to WWDC for other reasons, but it still wouldn't be fair.
2. Does anybody honestly believe that sales will suffer because it's not webcast? We have all heard how Apple is trying to play down announcements (i.e. no MacWorld). No other company announces product with so much fanfair. The product will be announced, and everyone will hear about it on the news or read about it on a website. A webcast is nice, but it's probably not a priority for Apple.

The above has Nothing to do with apple's decision to stream this or not! Absolutely none.

I'm glad that somebody else saw that too. Yes, it's 1700 hours UTC. This is what happens when you misuse local time zones instead of using the standard UTC - you can easily get confused about which time zones are where and you might miss something important like the Steve Jobs keynote!

Why do you say that? What is *your* logic behind Apple's decision not to webcast?
Give us a reason, not just bad grammar.

Jun 17, 2003, 01:22 PM
Ouch bad grammer, heaven forbid. That happens when you split your brain and talk on the phone and type at the same time.
Developers give a rats ass about seeing that stuff "first", we don't care. The keynote is not what WWDC is about for us.

So I'll ask the same question again. Why do *you* think Apple's not webcasting the keynote.

Do US "sports bars" tend to have this type of receiver anymore? If so, maybe we can get enough people together in some cities to have some mac happy hours at a sports bar willing to tune in. I'm sure there's nothing competing on the air at 10am-1pm.

I didn't realize that it is such a big event that so many universities are tuning in tho this. From macnn :
The University of Wisconsin is hosting Steve Jobs' keynote at WWDC 2003 live in an auditorium at the Pyle Center in Madison, WI. The School of Information at the University of Michigan will also be hosting live feed of Steve Jobs' keynote from WWDC. The event is open to the public and will take place 1:00-3:00 PM EST in room #311 West Hall (550 East University, Ann Arbor, MI). Several Apple Stores will also carry a live feed of the keynote, although it is unclear whether it will be available at all stores. Other locations hosting the keynote include:
SIGMAC, the Macintosh User Group at Case Western Reserve University, has arranged for a live feed of the satellite broadcast on the CWRU campus, Baker building, room L5 (lower level).
University of Central Florida (no details offered)
Ohio University (Athens, OH) will also offer the Apple WWDC satellite broadcast on its campus cable TV network CATVision. Viewers anywhere on campus can tune to channel 64 to see the event live.

"Live WWDC Coverage
This coming Monday, MacMerc will be giving the Mac web live coverage of the WWDC Keynote. Starting a few minutes before 10AM PST and lasting throughout the entire speech, we'll be updating nearly every minute. Please come join us. If you live in the Tampa, FL area, come out to the Apple store and say hi."
Not sure if that is a broadcast or just updates. You can decide for yourself MacMerc.com

Do you have any plans to broadcast the Apple WWDC Keynote on Monday? There are a lot of people that would appreciate this and it looks as if it will be a big announcement session. Thank you!

i think im more surprised that people are still asking if tech tv is gonna do it, i mean come on, they havent done it in forever and we all know why, its hardly a mac station and they hardly ever made the keynotes look good.
