Apple's special event (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/03/20/apple-nab-media-event-invites/) at the National Associations of Broadcasters (NAB) will be held this Sunday at 11:00am PDT, 2:00pm EDT. MacRumors will be providing live coverage of the event via MacRumorsLive.com (http://www.macrumorslive.com/).
Apple is widely expected (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/03/02/final-cut-pro-6-final-cut-extreme-details-displays-again/) to introduce an update to its Final Cut Suite, along with a possible introduction of a new high-end product named Final Cut Extreme. ThinkSecret has also mentioned a possible display update at or around NAB, and believes the 17" MacBook Pro may be updated to include a high definition display.
Apple's displays have not seen specification updates for quite some time, although they did see a price drop last week (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/04/04/apple-discounts-cinema-displays/).

I doubt we'll see a display update with the recent price drops. An updated 17" screen would be kinda cool, though. I wonder when Final Cut Studio will be released now that Leopard has been pushed back.

Then that is Mac OS X's biggest drawback - lack of hardware choice. And that is a HUGE drawback.

Right on. N.A.B. is not some consumer show. It is a hard core broadcast convention. For people there buying a few $15,000 edititing stations is bargin basement. The X-Serve RAID is bought by the dozen at $14,000 a piece because it is an absolute bargin compared to other solutions. These guys could care less that a new iPod is being updated.
Expect FCS Studio and FCS Extreme. Anything more will be a bonus.

Then prepare to be disappointed. They are not likley to introduce iLife to a bunch of broadcast pros at a convention.

I hereby officially expect nothing. Absolutely nothing of interest. They will release the new suite of FC, probably, and it will be the best thing since sliced bread if you need that kind of thing (FCE is totally meets all of my needs).
After the disaster that was MW2007, and the "Oh, did we say Spring??" news from yesterday, my expectations are extremely low.

While I'm content w/ what I have now, I'd like to see updated cinema displays with better resolution and more inputs as well as Mac Pros w/ better graphics. As for the displays, I have a few questions: what's the highest dpi you can get into a display (regardless of size)? I heard the iPhone will have a 160 dpi display, but couyld go even higher. Also, anyone know what the max resolution a dual-link DVI connector van produce. Follow-up: any new video connectors coming out soon and (if so) what's its max resolution? Just curious.

Nothing of intrest to YOU. Those of us who have been waiting for FCS 6 for over a year would beg to differ.
Apple has many user bases to cover. It's like trying to feed a bunch of baby birds. While one is being fed the others are squawking that they are being ignored and want to be fed NOW.
I hope it is a blow away FCS demo. That would be awesome. Even though it probably will be followed by, "but it needs Leopard so it will ship in Oct."

HD resolution on a 17" screen would get pretty tight. The icons and fonts would be silly small like what happened on Sony's 17" laptop. Sony's was at 1920x1200 and not 1920x1080, but I still think it would be hard to use without Leopard's resolution independence.

Digital cinematography is on a fast track. It would make sense to get in early in the game and become established as a player in the beginning.

I'll take a 13.3" Macbook with a 1440x900 display myself. Considering IBM and Dell have been shipping laptops with LCDs 1440-pixels-wide in 4:3, 14.1" format for a long time, some users, myself included, will be more than happy to deal with smaller icons, until they're all moved to SVG (as long as the fonts can be scaled somewhat).
This being Apple, though, I'm afraid even were this to happen they'll just make it available in the black model. Why can't Apple let its users customize their BTO models to their liking? After all, those who are not computer-savvy will just pick one of the standard options anyway.

I myself would love a mini pro tower but would probaly imagine price point to start at 1400-1600 and then go up to 2500. Also new displays would be awsome. All i know is if there is nothing that peaks my interest I am going to go back to the PC camp for the next 2years. I have been waiting way too long for hardware updates for apples line to be updated.

People will be skipping meals so they can afford to buy an iPhone. Now-unemployed Don Imus will take a job at Rutgers as a janitor at the women's athletic facility so he can afford to buy an iPhone. Parents will sell children. Children will sell parents. All so they can slide their greasy finger across that multi-touch screen to unlock the iPhone... and smudge it.
I went for a time thinking the iPhone was neat (RDF, I suppose), but now I realize it's a huge distraction for Apple.
This is not an attempt to hijack this thread. The reason I am talking about this is because I thought Apple would use the NAB special event to talk about the secret features in Leopard, since Apple said it was going to be released in the Spring (June, presumably). When the seed hit yesterday, I presumed the secret features would be there, waiting for disclosure on Sunday.
I'm irritated about yesterday because they held to the Spring delivery date for so long, even when it's now obvious that they weren't telling the truth. They didn't just decide yesterday that they need to delay it 4 months. I bet they've known for months.
Anyway, I now reiterate what I said in my first post in this thread. Please cut & paste those here in your own mind. I expect nada on Sunday.

If there are monitor upgrades I think we might see a 24" addition to the line, I could go out on a limb here and say it might even be HD. The LG people have EOL the 23 screen so there is only so much life left in it.
FCS studio and maybe a few more graphic card options to the MacPro line. The new Nvidia 5500 cards that are replacing the 4500 seem to be a very logical choice. As Apple has changed the way it upgrades the MacPro line by adding BTO options instead of refreshing the line-up this could easily be added at anytime. If Apple can not release FCS 6 until Leopard then a 0.5 update should do the trick. Maybe through in some new features to Motion like a 3d camera as well as tracking and such, add some codecs and what not.
I am also hoping that we might see Apple showing use some demos of CS3 running on a the MacPro's, I would love to see After Effects CS3 performance on on of these. They should really show hoe Motion can be the best plug-in for After Effects, they really need to sell this to people because most do not seem to know this.

If there are monitor upgrades I think we might see a 24" addition to the line, I could go out on a limb here and say it might even be HD. The LG people have EOL the 23 screen so there is only so much life left in it. ]
What do you mean it might be HD? The current 23" already has more (vertical) resolution than any HD standard.
For that matter, the 20" is HD (> 720p) ... The Powerbook G4 was HD (> 720p), etc... (I know, i guess you were talking about the 1080p HD standard and not HD in general, but still, the current 23" exceeds that already).

I wouldn't be surprised to see an update to the XServe RAID.
Currently the XServe uses SATA (Serial ATA) and SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) drives while the XServe RAID still uses older Ultra ATA drives.
So an update to the XServe RAID from Ultra ATA to SATA and SAS to catch up with the XServe would not be unreasonable.
Fibre Channel over Convergence Enhanced Ethernet (FCoCEE) requires 10 Gb/s Ethernet (up from the current 1 Gb/s) and the CEE standard hasn't been officially adopted yet. So I don't expect to see Apple drop or radically change its existing Fibre Channel storage architecture.
This would seem to be an appropriate update to announce at NAB.
We'll know soon enough. :)

That was hilarious.

I will be there, here's what I'm thinking:
Final Cut Red - 4k Red editing soulution
Final Cut Super Extreme - High end cards and Macs with control surfaces/breakout boxes, etc. (could be the same as the Red thingy)
Logic Pro update - Final Logic
And I expect Jannard to be there with his new camera and announce the first shipments.

Probably a blow away Demo followed by, "But it needs Leopard so we will ship in Oct." :(
I support this response because 64bit architecture (not 32/64bit architecture) running on a lower power 'dual' or 'quad' (insert plural) 64bit chip, could provide a "blow away Demo" for Final Cut, et. al. "followed by, But it needs Leopard so we will ship in Oct."
Having spent a lot of time using various 64bit Dec Alpha machines, 64bit SGI machines, and eventually moving to the Mac and FCP, this would appear to be a possible next step.
I also get the impression laptops would not be 'hardware updated' until October and a low power quad with a display update would be nice.
On another note, one could imagine how Apple TV, iPhone, and 64bit architecture Mac, with a fast 'bus', could 'nicely work together'. ;)

I'm hoping to see an update to the 15" MBP as well (easier to service hard drives and 4GB ram ceiling are on my wish list) An *option* for a higher res HD screen would be nice as well... (for both the 17 and 15...)

I think this site is confused as it is. It's called MACrumors, but it should beyond doubt be APPLErumors these days, as not much of what is reported is about the Mac. Call it Applerumors and have a Mac-part and a "toy"-part, where the iPhone and iPod-people can do whatever they want.

Announcing Magic Bullet 3
Magic Bullet 3, which will begin shipping this summer, includes three individual products: Magic Bullet Looks™, Magic Bullet Frames™, and Magic Bullet Colorista™. Magic Bullet Suite is a collection of these tools and also includes Instant HD.
Read the press release for full details and get a sneak peek at other new products we'll be showing at NAB -- Trapcode Flux, Instant HD Pro, and Primatte Keyer Pro 4.
• Magic Bullet Looks (formerly known as Magic Bullet Editors) lets you define the style of your video or film with powerful imaging tools in Final Cut Pro, Motion, Premiere Pro, Avid, and After Effects. Magic Bullet Looks is also a stand-alone design application—giving you the finishing power and on-set creation in one package. Take Magic Bullet Looks on set to create looks or presets using an image during production.
• Magic Bullet Frames offers fast and high-quality conversion of 60i materials to 24p or just deinterlacing of video in After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Avid, Premiere Pro, and Avid.
• Magic Bullet Colorista is the same exciting color correction tool that we launched in 2006. New support will be available for After Effects CS3 Professional, Premiere Pro CS3, and the new Final Cut Studio. Also there will be updates for Mac Intel across the board.
Stop by the Red Giant Booth #SL3827G, SL3827H (Adobe Plugin Pavilion) to watch a demo of these new products, during NAB in Las Vegas from April 16-19, 2007.
I got this email from red Giant Software. Note when they talk about Colorista it says support for the new Final Cut Studio.

- We are proud to say that Leopard will be released in June...oops, Oct.
- We want to show off our new top of the line system that will ship with leoopard...oops, a slight delay.
See, the team working on Leopard got pulled to iphone, and the broadcast folks got pulled to iphone, now they are all working on Leopard, and the features you see will be implemented sometime in Oct...of next year.
- but you can buy it today and it will run on your non-leopard macs!
Yes, you can have all these cool features waiting for you for next oct...pretend your cool now, and then pay for the update when we release it.

I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse of this stuff, but here's what I DO know: We placed a third-party order a few days back for a MP and ACD, and after that bounced to Apple our contact called back and strongly suggested waiting until after NAB. She didn't know anything, but someone at Apple told her to hang onto that order until after Sunday. Since we weren't ordering the current version of FCP, and this isn't a machine strictly for editing, I'm thinking this hints to either and ACD upgrade or some kind of MP surprise (in addition to anything FCP-related). The HD drive rumor might fit into this (though frankly, this isn't a priority for me so I'm--foolishly perhaps--hoping for something else).
As for people clamoring for separate "pro" and "idiot/consumer/switcher" forums, remember that whether you make a living with your Mac products or not has little to do with how mature you are or how well you stay on topic. There are plenty of articulate and appropriate non-pro posters, and likewise being a pro doesn't automatically confer intelligence and maturity. well said. the pro/consumer forums is a silly, elitist idea that assumes (without basis) that "pro" users are more likely to be capable of mature discussion.
As far as the rest of your comment goes... very interesting! New macbook pros would be really great, and I'd probably pick one up in a couple of months. New ACDs I really doubt, just because why would you drop the price and then update the line 12 days later?

We don't mean people like you. :)
We mean people that want iPods at NAB/NAMM, and start screming and yelling when they don't get toys from special events relating to pro-events. At least that's what I could do without. I think many people think that a special event is a special event, regardless of the settings it's in, and that's why it could be useful to point out that a special event at NAB is ost likely to contain news about pro-items.
And wether or not you are a recent switcher is not relevant at all, i think they were referring to the ones that yell that they will go out and buy a Dell instead everytime their insane expectations don't get fulfilled. ...and then they are still here after saying they'll buy a Dell 10 times..

I think a "Pro" area is a good idea. Just as it is a good idea to have a section for Apple TV and iPhone, why not one for X-serve and high end MacPro builds and apps?
There is more to it than the "price" and the "ego". These hardware and apps are sufficiently rarified in sales quantity, and diverse in end-uses that having a dedicated chat area is wise. There are other sites that do that now, but macrumors is attractive to many Mac users anyway, adding a "chapter" for X-serve and Pro is just smart content management.
Besides maybe Multimedia will move there :)

I seriously doubt the MBP 17" will be upgraded just for the display. I think that Apple is gonna want to upgrade a variety of things within the MBP 17" before they release the new laptop. Right now, Apple got a lot of people working on the iPhone to get it ready for release in June 2007 according one of the articles in MacRumors. Who is gonna have time for other stuff right now. It is possible that we may see a variety of upgrade in the iMac, MacMini and maybe MacBook Pro in June 2007 since the Leopard will not be released till October. I like to see something nice the upgrade with the MacMini. We'll See. :-)

And why is this? Can you elaborate?
Digital cinematography is on a fast track. It would make sense to get in early in the game and become established as a player in the beginning.
I think the main reason many people are doubtful is because it flies in the face of everything that has made Final Cut a success. FC is a low cost/high quality, scalable (low end SD to hi end HD), software based solution. If Apple now shifts to a tiered system based on hardware they start to look like Avid. And pretty much everyone hates Avid's tiered, hardware based business model.

And while you may call Final Cut software-based, it's always in Apples mind to push the envelope hardware-wise, so that people will be "forced" (in a mild manner), to upgrade to new Apple-hardware. I for one prefer this approach to Avids, but while it seems different the goal is not that far off, they create software with capabilities that just about requires the newest and best of hardware that Apple conveniently supplies. :)

Not to get this off topic, but I half agree with you here. A certain measure of simplicity is great (ever tried to look at dell's website? I have NO idea how many lines they have, much less how many models, much less which one would actually fit my needs best [if I were in the market for a dell]), but having holes in your lineup that excludes whole segments of the computer-buying population is not. I've made the point many times that apple has very good (financial) reasons for not offering the headless mac that so many people here want, but you can't deny that a great many buyers would be better off with such a machine than with current offerings.

I think the best way to address this problem would be in the story writing. While it goes into detail about some of the rumors, perhaps it needs to go into what NAB is/isn't and the past releases a little more for the newbies. Something like...
"The National Association of Broadcasters conference is geared towards high-end video content production. In the past, updates to Final Cut Studio applications and limited updates to higher end hardware have been released...please take this into account when framing your expectations and your discussion in the forums."

Apple has always been and will always be a "hardware + software" company. They release their own hardware accompanied by mostly* their own software. If they want to capture the higher end market it makes sense to them to offer a truly intergrated system for the mid-high end market users (e.g. Red and Varicam).

I think you are misunderstanding what I mean. By software based I mean FCP relies on the computer's CPU (and most likely GPU as well in the future) to do the heavy lifting and adding new features only requires updating the software. Hardware based systems (like an Avid Adrenaline or Matrox Axo) require additional hardware (either a card or external box) to do power the system and adding new features may require purchasing new or additional hardware.

I agree, and I just mean that in one sense both are "hardware based", it's just that Apple bases in on it's pro computers, while Avid doesn't make any computers, just boxes and cards. :)
To me the philosophy is similar, and it supports the argument that an Extreme-version of FCP would be a diversion from Apples current strategy of making top-end pro machines that does the work of other companies "boxes and cards". I don't know if this made sense, but i didn't misunderstand you, I think we were just talking in different jargon. :)

Certainly this would help. However I see nothing wrong in making a clear distinction between pro-level hardware and software and consumer-level hardware and software.
Essentially, anything beginning with the letter 'i' would fall in to the consumer pages and anything ending in 'Pro' would fall in to the pro pages.
Yes, there are many people who work professionally on an iMac, but that hardware is still geared toward the consumer.
Call them 'Consumer Electronics' and 'Professional Use' if you prefer, but we've got to put an end to discussion of iPods and iPhones within threads based on the professional use of Apple's higher-end equipment.
I understand that this creates ad revenue complications for the site's owners, but if people stop coming to the site, the revenue stream will dry up anyway.
This is NAB we're talking about and other than my earlier post about Fibre Channel and storage networks, I can recall only one or two other posts about high-end storage requirements.
I just think that splitting the pro and consumer information in to different areas of the site will lead to more active and interesting discussions in both areas.
But that's just me. :)

I just think that splitting the pro and consumer information in to different areas of the site will lead to more active and interesting discussions in both areas.
I disagree with the separation approach...I would think the best approach is to educate the newcomers to realistic expectations for Apple announcements at pro events (mainly NAB and NAMM). Maybe additional ways can be thought of to highlight pro rumors from commercial rumors...different graphics or color schemes to differentiate them on the main page. I'm just concerned that if we start having something like "MacRumors Pro" and "iMacRumors" that the interaction between the consumer level users and the professional users, which benefits both groups, will diminish.

You may think this arrogant of me but I can't recall anything useful that has been posted by a consumer-level user when discussing a pro-level subject.
I can see where a consumer-level user would find it helpful to follow professional-level discussions, but I don't see how they can contribute in a meaningful way.
However we can all discuss iPods and I don't have a problem clicking a different tab to do so instead of simply scrolling further down the same front page.
Yes, I'm an arrogant SOB, but I like it that way. :D

I work for a well-established Apple Video VAR in the Mid-Atlantic, and leave for Vegas tomorrow with our crew. Should be a fun show, and we will be at the event.
While I have no insider information at all, I think the following would be pretty believable:
• Final Cut Studio 6, or whatever they end up calling it. My gut tells me it will now scale nicely to 2K and maybe 4K, have Redcode support for the Red One camera, but some of these features may require a high-end 3D gfx card and a high-end AJA or Blackmagic Designs capture/monitoring/accelerator card.
• Logic Pro 8 -- please, please Lord! We've been waiting for sooooo long...
• Blu-ray burner as a BTO option in Mac Pro? Maybe. Would be nice, especially for backup/archiving of video media, P2 cards, yadda yadda.
• AVCHD support would be really nice -- I have a GOV client who uses the format, simply because the cameras are such a small form-factor, and they need that for the kind of stuff they do. I do dislike the format, though, or frankly any format that is either interlaced or not just I-frames (damn you P and B frames! Damn you!)
• Easy mixing and matching of codecs/frame sizes on the timeline would be nice, but Quicktime isn't always so pretty for these kind fo transcode operations. So along with that, a simple improvement in Quicktime's underlying math for transcode operations.
• Is Quicktime and QMaster already heavily multi-threaded? Honestly I can't remember off the top of my head. More advancements in this area would be nice, especially with the 8-core MONSTERS that are now available.
• MAYBE a new MacBook Pro -- they unveiled the 17" MBP at NAB last year, so it could happen again.
• Free drink coupons and gambling chips for all attendees! Hah, OK, it would be nice, but I guess unlikely. ;)
• Obviously along with a new Final Cut would come a new Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro. So new goodies for all those apps.
• Apple bought Proximity Group and Artbox for a reason -- so some kind of digital media asset management solution, probably nothing too alien from Artbox, maybe even more or less identical, cleaned up a bit, and the server component running on OS X Server.
• Apple bought Final Touch HD for a reason -- maybe some news on a high-end color correction/grading system?
• We know Shake is EOL, but Apple isn't going to get out of the high-end compositing business, especially with high-quality independent digital cinema on the verge of explosion. So some new product that Shake has morphed into, probably leveraging Core Animation, or at least some of the Core Animation frameworks so they can get it out before 10.5 ships.
Well, looking at all the above (and trust me, I know this side of Apple's business extremely well), nothing above looks too unbelievable at all. But it's a LOT of things, and this could mean a VERY exciting NAB for Apple (good thing, too, cuz last year was pretty lame.) And some of those points do seem to indicate that a high-end compositing/color-correction system could be a reality.
OH GOODY! Can't wait to show up in Vegas tomorrow, it's going to rule! :D

I would love to see a Pro section of this website. It wouldn't be an iron curtain by any means, but rather, a way of encouraging people to post in the appropriate areas. NAB is not going to be iLife, new iPods, or frankly anything consumer-level. There's no reason why teenagers who know little/nothing of the Pro market should feel the need to whine about this kind of stuff when a lot of Pros would prefer to have serious, useful, technical discussions relating to this kind of subject matter. But it's very tough to do that when 9 out of 10 posts are irrelevant, misinformed, or what have you.

I really don't see any ACD updates commin' at NAB.. I really think it's to early to get any LED displays now because the price would be too high and the pannel is a bit thicker than a normal LCD (am i right here?).
I just ordered a 30" ACD with the price drop, which should be home on monday. I was so tired of waiting for upgardes that i do believe, won't come until the end of the year, thought i would have loved to see ACD with isights HDMI and Firewire 800. I hope i'm wrong and they do release thoses things on sunday. If so, i'll ship back my 30" box still sealed to the apple store and will order a brand new one straight away even if it's a 400$ more.

Of course software is hardware based in the most general sense of the term because you have to have a computer to run the software. I agree that the "jargon" may be the problem. In the US when talking about gear like this if something is refereed to as "hardware based" that basically means it needs a specific piece of proprietary hardware to function.
iGuy, if you want to talk more about pro stuff there are plenty of pro forums like dvxuser.com, dvinfo.net, reduser.net, hdforindies.com, creativecow.net, and 2-pop.com that will have more in depth discussions about NAB. Macrumors is a general purpose site and I see no reason to segregate it (especially since there are very few "pro" members relatively speaking).

wow, in 4 years here, I've NEVER seen such whining as is going on right now. The delay to leopard seems to have turned over 50% of this board in to whiny, semi-trolls. So you have to live with Tiger for a few more months. Not exactly the end of the world!
To give you my two cents' worth, I think it's not just the Leopard delay that's upset people. It's more of a cumulative effect. Disappointment after disappointment after disappointment. People are getting pissed. Sure, many here believe that Tiger is still the best OS out there. But this is the world of computers, where it's often the 'latest is greatest'. Right now, Vista is the latest. And in the retail desktop computer sector, Windows PCs with Direct X 10 graphics cards are the latest. Apple needs to play catch up, and quickly. I'm not going to upgrade my iBook to an iPhone, that's not what I need right now. Hopefully the Pro users will get what they want from NAB, but I'm greedily hoping for a treat for everyone else out there too...

Frankly the people whining about the Leopard delay almost invariably are the one who get the least amount of production done with their computers.
If I go over to Creative Cow (Pro video site) I'm not going to see even %10 of the whining. People that earn their living with a computer realize that when an OS "does" come it must work as advertised. They engage in needless speculation they don't look forward to the next OS as some sort of life fulfilling event. The Mac is a tool that they use to put food on their table.
So with this in mind NAB could indeed be the launch pad for a product or not. You will not see consumer stuff launched at a Pro event.
If Apple were to show Final Cut Pro 6 and the rest of the studio. If they wre to say "this stuff is Leopard only and will be delivered in October" most Pros would simply look at the new features ...ascertain where they can make more money (justifying the upgrade) and the potential for downtime or learning new features. There's no rush if you have billable clients in queue.
Macrumors is a great site but Pros won't come here enmass because they don't have time to wade through posts from people outside their industry with no knowledge of what "they" need to move their business forward.

But yes, I agree with you about the dependency on an OS being reliable. Which is why corporate IT departments never install an OS as soon as it comes out. Whether it is Windows or OS X. Therefore naturally they don't care if there's going to be a delay to a major release or not, since it's not going to be deployed anyway.

Apple's been on board Blu-Ray from the get-go,
Sony's already included recorders in their computers,
& Vendors are introducing stand-alone recorders.
The announcement will be Blu-Ray players standard in upcoming computers.
Maybe BR/HD.
Jobs has gone on record musing that the only way to prevent
high definition (BR/HD) bootlegs is to disallow high def recording whatsoever,
& that's not gonna happen.
The announcement will include Blu-Ray recording capability.
That's my guess for NAB.

I expect any announcements at NAB will be confined to Final Cut and the new incarnation of Shake. That's what is relevant to this audience and Apple will feature these on the octo-Mac Pro. Blue Ray option is also a strong possibility, price is the only reason for Apple to make us wait, and the video market is willing to pay whatever it costs for this tech.
I'll be sorely disappointed if they announce a measly display update for MacBook Pro when Santa Rosa is just around the corner. Apple should be first out of the gate with the new processor, they're the partner Intel wishes to showcase most. Apple will either be on the podium with Intel in early May or announce the new MBP shortly thereafter. A MBP update now implies we'll be waiting a long time for the Santa Rosa update, which will cover most everything on everybody's wish list.
What was the lead time last year from announcing Core Duo and C2D before shipping product? Maybe my memory is applying some wishful color, but I seem to remember Apple was among the first manufacturers to ship the new processors with each release.

The best way is to write it into the story. Same as they should have defined spring in Leopard posts to avoid ruining discussion with pointless speculation about the meaning. The best thing to come out of the delay is Apple said "October" and not "Fall."
I would go a step further and say the moderators should also clean up the topics once something like that has been posted in the topic. Posts about iPods in an obviously-Pro topic (e.g. NAB conference) should be deleted.

I don't consider this a yearly update. The Final Cut Pro update of last year was primarily bringing the applications up to Universal Binary for Intel support and a few features tossed in for a cheap price. Thus Sunday should be the unvieling of nigh 2 years of advancement.

Lethal
Exactly. Apple should support the "Extreme" features through any old add-in card instead of Avid's convoluted system. On a similar note, I don't know why everyone assumes FC6 will require a 64 bit processor and Leopard to run. Not everyone who uses Final Cut professionally updates their system every month. While FC5 requires Tiger for things like rendering off of the GPU, other features such as Multi-angle editing work fine in Panther, which probably sold a lot of extra copies. When they added the new high quality render option, they left the legacy linear rendering in for the G4 crowd. Apple has no reason to drop support for legacy users. I'm aware that if I ran FC6 on my Core Duo MBP that it would not have run as well as it would on Mac Pros or C2D machines, nor should it. Optimizing it for the best machines is great, but making it not work on one year old machines with the word "Pro" in their title would be a horrible move on Apple's part, and counter to the reason many users choose final cut in the first place (i.e., they need a full-featured edit suite but can't afford Avid).

I'm curious why so many of you are under the impression that this event at NAB will feature updates or news concerning video production software only. I keep seeing that kind of thing expressed and yet a quick Google search turns up info concerning Apple's 2006 NAB announcements that seems to prove otherwise. Here's a quote from Apple's own site (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/articles/2006/04/nab/index.html).
On the opening day of NAB (the annual convention of the National Association of Broadcasters), Apple unveiled its new 17-inch MacBook Pro notebook computer featuring the Intel Core Duo processor ....
Further, I see mention of other products that some of you have stated would not be showed to an assembly of video professionals (such as Aperture.)
* Final Cut Studio
o Final Cut Pro 5
o Motion 2
o DVD Studio Pro 4
o Soundtrack Pro
o Compressor
* Aperture
* Logic Pro
* Shake 4
That shows that Apple can justify just about any announcement there. Video production pros are also buyers and customers and need laptops and other equipment besides Final Cut. I don't see why Apple wouldn't mention other things. I'm sure those things won't be the primary focus but if they are of interest to consumers, they will be of interest to the people at NAB.
It's just like WWDC. Although development is the primary focus, we see lots on non-developer stuff there too. I'm not sure why NAB can't be treated the same way.

They can announce other products besides video production software, but those products will also be geared towards the professional market (Macbook Pro)...nothing with an "i" at the beginning of it...and it's not that you can't see Logic or Aperture released there, it's just that (barring development setbacks) those things are more likely to be debuted at NAMM (for Logic) or Photokina or another photographer's conference (for Aperture).
It's a little different than WWDC, because at WWDC the developers develop software for an OS that is on both consumer and professional machines, they might even develop games for the iPod or apps for the iPhone. The NAB folks spend the big bucks to use high-end software on high-end machines.

Aperture: Pro Photographers, not that far-fetched at NAB.
MBP: Come on, Apple's flagship notbook is the only way to run FCP on the road, what makes you see this as proof of the possiblity of consumertoys..?
First off, I'm not personally hoping for anything and I understand that the "i" products are unlikely. I have no personal or emotional investment in what Apple does at NAB. I just didn't understand why people seem so certain that it will be only about Final Cut and little else.
It seemed strange to me why people are so certain of what Apple can and cannot do at NAB so I searched and it turns out that some people spouting off with absolute certainty are (surprise surprise) wrong. I've seen many people right here on these forums in the recent past swear that Aperture is out of the question and yet, it's there on Apple's site from last year.
Further, after a little more searching following my previous post, it looks like Apple has used NAB as a place to unveil XServes, pro Macs and displays as well as showing off some features of the OS. I don't know where this "Final Cut only" thing comes from. Final Cut mostly, but not only. That's all I was trying to prove.

Just to clarify...the Aperture link is just listed in a list of links to the Pro Apps product pages, it's not a list of NAB related product announcements. While an Aperture update to v 1.1 was released last year on April 13th, NAB was later in April last year (the MacBook Pro was announced on the 24th at NAB).

Yes indeed. In the absence of any empirical positive or negative tone people will allow their perception to "color" what they read. Thus he probably thought I was slamming MacRumors posters of which I'm a proud poster who's been here years.
Actually I was reacting to the thought I should consider myself "lucky" the forums are frequented by professionals. Like I should thank them for gracing me with their presence. Then you suggest there should be a special "professional" section of the forums, an attempt to segregate and create some elitist subgroup within a community that is hobby/enthusiast oriented by definition.
I wouldn't say that it is obvious and you will find that EVERY year NAB is "supposedly" the launchpad for iPods or consumer laptops. Some people simply don't know it's a Broadcasters show. I'm ok with that.
I would say the exhibitors hold part of the blame for that, and not just Apple. Remember the "SuperShuffle" iPod knockoff? It made a very public appearance at... NAB. I, too, am rather tired of Apple turning every conference/media event into a venue for new product launches, and I'm sure much of the Developers' Conference attendees feel the same way. The real issue here, like I said before, is the lack of a summer Macworld Expo. And that is nothing more than a continuation of Apple and IDG feuding over whether it was in New York or Boston.
The secrecy of Apple product launches and the recent spree of iPod-only focus in recent years has built up quite a hunger for information, hard info on when new products (pro and consumer oriented) are coming out whose main function is not playing Fairplay-wrapped content. So now every Apple appearance is a wish and a prayer for info on what's going on with the iSight, why the displays are falling so far behind the competition in price/performance, ect.

Excellent points. It must feel like like working in a vault at Apple. I know I'm getting "antsy" about some things and normally I'm a patient guy. And I do miss Macworld Boston/NY...hell I didn't care where it was.

There is no such thing as Final Cut Extreme. Apple will not be introducing a $10000 4K editing suite. The very idea is ridiculous.
Well, there is the RED camera (http://red.com/)…
Apple likes to support these things, it lets them show off.

Right. I wasn't trying to imply that Aperture was updated or demonstrated as part of any NAB announcements, but the fact that Apple lists it on the page about their appearance at NAB shows that they consider their relevance there to go beyond Final Cut.

I think the truth is probably a little more mundane than that...I bet the web design dept. has a style guide that all stories that mention a pro app have to have a link to that pro apps page. The right column is almost always shorter than the story, so they've come up with a handy code snippet that has all the pro app links in it to place in the right column. Any time a story mentions a pro app, cut-paste-voilá...done.
I don't think any one is saying that it's "always and forever just Final Cut at NAB"...it's Pro products as well. Of course it might not appear to often in this specific thread because the displays were just updated and the notebooks are waiting for Santa Rosa (unless they are just going to announce and ship later, which is possible). That leaves the Mac Pro (there have been posts speculating about adding a blue-laser burner BTO option) and the XServe.

Also Apple will have a larger booth than ever before--Steve usually does not address at NAB as someone like Phil Schiller (mktg head) usually does.

I think FCP 6 will be the centerpeice of this presentation. But I'm also hoping Apple spends some time explaining how well (or not) the 8 core MP works as is and how it'll get through these next 6 months without Leopard to help it manage all those cores. If they don't talk about that, could be a hint they have the SS model coming up between now and October.
I still think the 8 core is a publicly available developer's platform more than anything else. But I admire those who pulled the trigger right away for one.

LoopRumors has a horrible history of "scoops" I don't believe this. Nor do I believe that video professionals really care about Leopard delays. The main question I'm seeing is "Will FCP6 be Leopard only?" I doubt that it will be but that's more of a pressing concern than delays to Leopard if what I'm reading on a few sites is indicative of overall sentiments.

8 core Mac Pro will be demoed
Release of Blue-Ray (and/or the other standard) burners
New improved cinema display maybe 25", 32" or 42"
New / improved Audio Visual software for Professionals
Perhaps an Aperture update

Yes NAB is broadcasters conference. So my guess is the majority of apples conference will be aimed at that fact but it is also a venue in witch apple can release a product and get great media coverage. I would not put anything past apple right now though i don't think we will see any updates on the I line just yet and neither the macbook line. Though they could introduce a new product or update the pro and ACD. We will see soon enough.

NAB is a broadcasters conference right, so anything released will be of prime interest to them. DISCLAIMER: I haven't a clue really. For quite a few years now, since the 90's, this show has become the biggest Multimedia show on earth. It's really more like an electronic communications mini University - a show made up of a group of conferences for each specific communications medium all tied together under the NAB umbrella.
For example, yesterday Friday through tomorrow Sunday is a Podcasters conference having everything to do with Audio and Video Podcasting. In fact one of several Podcaster conference Keynotes is happening at the same time as the Apple event tomorrow morning. There's a Web conference, a Mobile Phone conference, a Radio conference and a TV conference as well - all going on simultaneously. So to call it a "Broadcasters Show" is really a misnomer. A Better term would be an Old and New Electronic Media Show.
If Steve, who was a NAB Keynote Presenter back in the late 90's even before Final Cut Pro 1 was shipping, shows up for this Apple event it will be a first. I for one hope he does and I hope he's willing to be frank about what happened to cause the Leopard delay and how it might impact us short term re: the 8 core MP and FCS 6. I'm not mad at him. I'm not mad at anyone. These things happen and we just need to relax and go with the flow. It's all good. :)

these days IBC is the truly 'pro' broadcasters conference
as a result, NAB has become the product announcement playground, where the big players make their big splashes ... wheras IBC is when all those clever new products actually ship (unless you're GVG's Infinity in which case you'll probably nver ship ;))

NAB would be a strategic entry point for Jobs to introduce multitouch displays. As the conference is geared towards content creation – and FCP and Logic are most suited to benefit from this new interface – multitouch cinema displays could be introduced now as a high-end production option, then phased into the core hardware lineup over the next six months. Incorporating multitouch into the core OS simultaneously with Leopard's release has always been a more elegant solution – but an NAB launch would give the public more time to become accustomed to the idea of the interface transition, while simultaneously denting the impact of Leopard's delayed release date.

I would like support for different codecs and video resolutions usable in the same timeline in real time with no rendering!!! It really sucks how FCP locks you into the project settings, with all other material not matching the settings not working in real time.
I would also like a better way to track capture, auto saves, render files, and other media within the project. Right now it puts all those files in the FCP docs folder, but I always move the files and reorganize them into a final project folder for archiving and distribution. I think it would be better if all these files were stored in one project folder or file by default.

Unless MBPs have been underselling lately, it is unlikely that Apple would want to introduce an update that wasn't shipping within a few days. But, aside from the possibility of Apple's increasingly favourable relationship with Intel (4-Core 3Ghz etc) paying off with Santa Rosa because big demand for Apples means big margins on early runs of chips only yet available in small numbers for Intel, and Intel's ability to often beat their own timeframes (I can't remember any examples, but I've heard people mention this before...), there are actually a couple reasons to think MBPs are underselling:
1) The advert at the store saying "Going fast." A play-on-words pushing the MBs'/MBPs' speed, implying that they're selling well - a suggestion that the very advert itself refutes. Granted, there's not much by way of new computers to tout, but my understanding of marketing tells me to be pretty skeptical of this advert.
2) It is surely not just ppl on MR who have noticed that Apple are in dire need of putting out a new computer. Sales are likely to be down, since Apple hasn't bothered using the iphone halo effect to garner attention for any new products (the 8-core workstation doesn't count cos of the market its going for). Apple has been gaining marketshare in laptops quicker than in desktops, lack of updates discourages switchers, who are more likely to look into their purchase out of ignorant curiosity, than a beleaguered mac user whose grown weary of these sites and simply needs a new notebook.
Even if they don't bring new MBPs in a "one more thing" today, I doubt apple will wait long once the chips are available. So, it should only be a month or so either way.

Also I note the DVD Studio Pro is no longer part of FCS 2.
