Is it necessary to close all running apps when installing new software?

I've never found it to be the case, though I tend to quit running apps when doing an OS update.

One of my favorite features when i first switched over from xP... :) I do however close out all apps when i do apple system updates, but for regular applications, let whatever is open, stay open! =)
