"Let's go back a ways to NAB 1999." Shows crappy old box... "I know, we MADE that box! It's weird. We learned. Pro quality editing workstations cost upwards of $100k back then -- we wanted to bring that power to everyone. A democratization of the editing process."

Does that mean we get new Macs? :)

Is it me or is the keynote just.......*yawn*.
God yeah, i saw this boring show yesterday on TV about cars for car enthusiasts. I mean, why couldn't it have been on something i'm interested in?
 /sarcasm
Final Cut Server sound pretty awesome, and the added goodness of Soundtrack Pro 2 is very nice. I'll wait until i see some more details before making my mind up, but this seems like its going to make a lot of Final Cut users extremely happy soon.
And all 8 cores beings used too. Now that's tasty.

IO-HD is new hardware.... I don't know why you all let yourselves get hyped up for nothing. This is a pro event, hence all the pro gear and software. There may be new displays maybe... but stop expecting new consumer crap. Its not happening. If it does, consider yourself very very very lucky.

I don't think steve would have someone else present new hardware, would he? especially if it was a truly awesome upgrade. But I guess santa rosa wouldn't qualify as truly awesome. LED mbp would be awesome :)

My problem is that we, macrumors users except pro users, have told buyers that the iMac and Macbook works fine with FCP. I knew in my heart that if you going to do video, your shooting yourself in the foot with anything else then less then MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.
The iMac isn't a Pro machine, and certainly won't be used in a Pro environment where people are purchasing IO-HDs. They'll be Mac Pro or MacBook Pro all the way.
I'm sure FCS2 will work fine for everything you've done already in FCS1.
I don't get it- the iMac is superior to the MBP in every way...
I'd love for you to point out how, exactly, before I spill my coke while laughing again.

Better GPU perhaps ? (MBP has clocked down X1600)
There's also people who don't need portability (like me), so the iMac is far better choice..

The 24" iMac has a far better GPU than any MBP and all iMacs use faster desktop HDDs as well. If FCS 2 works great on a MBP, it'll work even a bit better on a high end iMac. All you have to do is look at the specs to clearly see that.

iMac is a consumer desktop, Macbook Pro is a professional laptop, you aren't comparing the same things.

You might want to take a look at the specs. The iMac and MBP are basically the same. Yes, one is a consumer desktop and the other is a pro notebook, but that doesn't change the fact that they're essentially the same inside. The 24" iMac is definitely a faster system than the 17" MBP is for example.

Well all I can say is roll on wwdc07. If Mr Jobs rumbles at macworld are anything to go by this is a massive year for apple so everything must be coming out at wwdc. Apart from Leopard which we all know is delayed.

Yes but the MBP was designed for portability if you are a pro and do not need portability you get a Mac Pro! The iMac does not fit as a pro machine..

There is many more pros using 20inch and 24inch imacs than use mac pros.

The 24" iMac has FireWire 800. The other iMacs do not.

The point he was making was that the iMac was the desktop equivalent of the MacBook whilst the Mac Pro was the desktop equivalent of the MacBook Pro. Two different classes of computers with two different target audiences.

The point he was making was that the iMac was the desktop equivalent of the MacBook whilst the Mac Pro was the desktop equivalent of the MacBook Pro. Two different classes of computers with two different target audiences.
I understand that, but that argument is seriously flawed strictly from a performance standpoint. Internally the iMac and the MacBook Pro are virtually the same, as they use essentially the same components (except for graphics and HDDs). The MacBook is comparable to the Mac mini performance and component wise, not to the iMac. And there is no "notebook equivalent" to the Mac Pro, it is in a class all by itself.
There is no arguing the fact that an iMac is a consumer (the 20" and 24" are really pro-sumer if you will) desktop, while the MacBook Pro is a pro notebook. However, the iMac and MacBook Pro are comparable in virtually every way specs wise, and actually the iMac is a faster machine due to the faster graphics and HDD they use.
In the end, FCS 2 will run a bit faster on a 20" or 24" iMac than it will on any MacBook Pro. That's just simply a fact. Sure, the Mac Pro is the way to go desktop wise if you can afford it, but for anyone to imply that an iMac can't run FCS as well if not better than any MBP just because it's a "consumer" desktop is just plain wrong.
