Very worthwhile FCS 2 upgrade. $499 from FCS1 and $699 from any version of FCP all the way back to the beginning so no penalty for doing the FCP to FCS upgrade for $199 and everyone who missed it can now jump to FCS2 for only $699 which is really great for all who missed the $199 deal during this past year which did not include FCP 1, 2 & 3.
Only Academic 4 owners who didn't upgrade to FCS1 lost this time as they can only buy FCS2 for $699 academic and not get commercial FCS2 for $499 like those who did.

Our feed was just too flakey. we had to rely too much on summary statements from our contact rather than transcribing the feed itself like we normally do, so we just pulled the plug. Kudos to Engadget for doing a great job. They beat us out (this time).

Uncompressed HD is near impossible with ordinary macs because of HD transfer rates... it's way too high. you need an eSATA or Fibre Channel RAID (i.e. XServe RAID) to be able to do much with it. this compresses the video to i think 1/8th of the original size or so, so that it's more manageable. during the event they said with the IO-HD (which encodes to ProRes 422) you can do 4K video editing on a macbook pro, which is unreal.
and the IO-HD supports format conversion as well, so you can ingest at 1080i60, and output at 720p without blinking an eye. if you have an HDV camera, this would be great, because you can ingest at ProRes 422, then do your editing, because HDV is a very lossy format and is horrible for many image manipulations.

Apr 15, 2007, 03:33 PM
Ok it's clear to me now.
DVD Studio Pro 5 is not a part of FCS anymore. My guess is there will be a seperate program announced this upcoming week.
DVD SP 5 will add full HD DVD and Blu-ray authoring support and offer perhaps Dolby and DTS surround sound encoding options.
There is no need for FCP Extreme. You have the ProRes codec and IO-HD which gives you access to 4k editing.
Those that thought MBP and Cinema Displays were going to be announced need to wake up. This was Pro event via invite. Not an Apple public tradeshow.
Nice upgrade and I agree with the decision (I'm guessing) to pull DVD SP 5 from the bundle. Some people "just" need the authoring tools. Making them pay $1299 didn't make much sense IMO.

So FCS isn't due until next month (according to Engadget) which makes me wonder why the Apple store is even closed at all. Do they usually close it down for product announcements that are that far off?
I don't expect any consumer products to be discussed at NAB but I wonder if the iMacs and Minis will see quiet updates once the store is back up, given how overdue they are for it. Does seem curious that it's down for an event like NAB.

What is 4:2:2 aspect ratio?
It's not an aspect ratio. 4:2:2 is how the luminance and color is handled with video. Regular DV is 4:1:1 meaning that you have 4 pixels of luminance for every 1 and 1 color sample. Basically it means that there is four times the infromation in the luminance (brightness) of the pixel than the actual color. 4:2:2 is only twice as much info so you get better color information. Much better for things like green screening.

Lame, lame, lame. I was hoping for a complete re-do of audio editing in FCS. As is, it looks like you still have to use ProTools. Sigh, Vegas is better in that department :(
Apple: FCP 6 was supposed to be a complete re-do of FCP 5, considering that they've been cruising with very minor improvements since FCP 4.0.
I work with FCP, and I guess my expectations were higher for 6. The fact that DVDSP was left untouched is also lame. How are you supposed to take advantage of all that HD handling if your output capabilities still suck? I thought the Sony execs were there to help with BR for DVDSP.
Oh well. Maybe my expectations were too high. So far, I don't feel they've delivered the revolution 6 was supposed to be. Lamo.

Available Disk Space
4GB of disk space required to install all applications (Final Cut Pro, Color, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, Cinema Tools, LiveType, Compressor, and Apple Qmaster)
Additional 55GB required to install all optional templates, content, and tutorials (may be installed on separate disks):
9GB for DVD Studio Pro content
8GB for Motion templates and tutorial media
24GB for Soundtrack Pro audio content
12GB for LiveFonts and LiveType animated elements and templates
2GB for Apple Pro Training Final Cut Studio Tutorials media
Either way, disk hog. I certainly wouldn't install the entire studio on my MBP, but on a Mac Pro or iMac, certainly.
I'm impressed with the few snippets I've read here thus far, but nothing appears to be unexpected and there are still some crucial features missing. Roll on FCP 6.1

Will come when they are ready. Chances are Apple is looking at LED backlighting and at the minimum need HDCP support before they call fully support HD DVD and Blu-ray.
Samsung has a 24" panel coming in the summer as one of the first. Right now would have been too early if Apple is indeed looking at LED lighting.
Yes, I suspect Apple is working on achieving SWOP certification for the newer technology LED and Wide Gamut Displays. The panels that are out now have widely variable gamuts and gradiations between colors due to the lack of finely tuned internal LUT's for both Print and Broadcast work.
I am pretty confident Apple knows it would be Display Suicide for them to rush out a Wide Gumut or LED display without SWOP certification. Professionals to whom this matters would abandon these displays in a hurry, choosing EIZO's or existing ACD's instead.

I don't know many broadcasters that would work solely on a laptop either. They'd most likely have Mac Pros, and farm out rendering to Xserves or something.

How on earth is this possible?!
Can someone in industry explain the significance of the IO-HD and ProRes 422 format?
Are these revolutionary things or just Apple's entry into an existing market?
This is the reason why Avid has been the market leader. There's no reason why anyone should be shocked at FCP adding these features, as they have been in Avid for many years now. Take a look at Avid's codec "DNxHD" which does the same thing. I hope that FCP's ProREs is very robust.

My god this is awesome. Finally they introduced 3D into Motion, that was the only real thing keeping me with After Effects. Now if I can get all the Trapcode plugins (i.e. Shine, Starglow, 3D Stroke). I am definitely going to upgrade. Although since this is Apple's first implementation of 3D Cameras, lights, etc. I might still get the new After Effects as a backup.

Well... Any FCS/FCP academic user still has to pay the full $1299 for the commercial version, or $699 for the Academic version. Shouldn't there be a more affordable option to facilitate academics upgrading to commercial software?

My god this is awesome. Finally they introduced 3D into Motion, that was the only real thing keeping me with After Effects. Now if I can get all the Trapcode plugins (i.e. Shine, Starglow, 3D Stroke). I am definitely going to upgrade. Although since this is Apple's first implementation of 3D Cameras, lights, etc. I might still get the new After Effects as a backup.
There has been 3D in Motion for awhile. I know that Motion 2 had it. And it's so easy to use. I'm actually going to start transferring some of my Flash projects over to Motion, where things are so much easier and it has real 3D.

I geuss I'll be using FCS 1 Academic for quite awhile. Could be worse, it still rocks. You had ton of opportunities to go from Academic 1 to 2, 3 or 4 Commercial for $50 to $150 back in the day. Why didn't you exercise one of those many opportunities when Apple presented them?
The last opportunity to go from Academic 4 or any PPC part of Production Studio to FCS 5.1 UB was $199 for a YEAR. You couldn't put it together in a YEAR? Face it, you didn't want to know how to upgrade for these past 8 years and now you can't. This was the end of Academic to Commercial upgrades March 20, 2007.

I wonder when people will stop bitching! Honestly, I've never seen so many people bitch about everything. Its unbelievable!!!
Apple could release a Quad Core 10GHz Mac Pro tomorrow and someone would find something to bitch about still! Can't you people just be happy with what you got? There are people out there who would love to have the equipment some of us have, yet we all bitch because we think we always need to have the latest and greatest all the time when half of us won't even utilize it.

Based on quite a few responses from you, it looks like you're really uptight this afternoon. I did pay attention. In fact, it is the first year in quite a while I am not attending the NAB. But untill now I am not able to edit uncompressed HD on a Macbook Pro, and I will not be till July. And even then, I don't see myself, even with the IO-HD, doing a full production on the Macbook Pro. The unit is really meant to edit HD on location not doing a full production.

I don't know many broadcasters that would work solely on a laptop either. They'd most likely have Mac Pros, and farm out rendering to Xserves or something.

Yep...in other words, YAWNN...no new Macs, no new iPods...really boring for people outside the industry.
Dont forget, this is NAB, not WWDC or the Expo.
One of the big overall points that is being overlooked is the level to which Apple has raised the game with this release. This new Studio package is going to have an impact similar to the one which was caused by the original intruduction of Funal Cut Pro (in fact the VP giving the presentation said as much). Color alone replaces a suite of systems formerly used to "grade" media that cost a few hundered thousand dollars... now Apple has integrated it into the FC Studio.

There are realistic expectations and unrealistic expectations. Your's are based on the latter. Santa Rosa is a new platform. Neither of those 2 cpus you've cited were new platforms, and the 8-core wasn't developed exclusively for Apple -- Apple just got 1st crack at the (limited) batch.

The key to editing on laptop hardware will also be the proxy files avaliable through Final Cut Server. The ability to edit together a project without the huge system overhead of full-res files is a big deal. The ProRes 422 HD format (and its 8:1 compression of full HD) is also a big part of that wow factor, and its integrated into that box but also avaliable inline in the studio for conversions.
This has consumer-level implications in the near future as well, for when Apple looks to increase the quality of video offered through iTunes Store.... the compression quality really is rather amazing.

Not disappointed about no Logic Pro... from the rumours it seems like the next version will be a massive jump, so I'd rather Apple take their time to get it right (Logic Pro 7 is still amazing).
Come on get over this one. My Amiga had this spectrum analyser view in a MOD player, back in 1991 or 1992.
It's a standard way of visualising the audio. There is only so many things you can do with it, and have it be useful.

It's not really an unreasonable expectation. Apple has been doing more and more Mac updates without a lot of fanfare (and not always on the sacred Tuesday either.) Improved 64-bit support comes with Leopard. Tiger supports 64-bit code, but doesn't have (all) 64-bit libraries or frameworks required for a traditional OS X GUI. However, you can still code a function (that doesn't require a GUI) that provides 64-performance -- a routine that renders video, for example.

what in god's name are you talking about? They make the software, they know what's involved in terms of production and packaging time to get it out to the public they have been doing it for years. Why not time it to conicide with the release? Is NAB not at the same time every year? Does apple not know that? If apple announced a product a year before they intended to ship it (iphone aside as they stated their reason) you would be like wtf. The whole point of making new software is for people to use it. And the software is done, which is usually the only hold up.

This new codec is for editing HD content in very high quality at a datarate comparable to uncompressed SD video: slimmer than uncompressed HD, but way too fat for downloadable. Videos and movies on iTunes are much more heavily compressed, a range where H.264 or MPEG4 is more suited.
From what I've heard, much of the crappy quality of the iTunes video downloads is due to poor source material provided by the studios. Of course, at those file sizes, it will never be DVD quality even with some magical new codec--there's just only so much information that can be lost before it becomes noticeable.

I'm just speaking in general about a full-blown 64-bit GUI-based app running under Tiger. They're not easily put together, at least not at this point in time, without building most/much of the GUI from scratch.
I'd think FCStudio2 would have been designed with Leopard's 64-bit features/abilities in mind. So, in theory at least, there may be aspects of the app that could be "unleased" in a sense via the improved 64-bit support under Leopard.
I'm only basing this opinion on what I've seen with other OSs during their 64-bit expansion phases, combined work in programming.... I'm just offering "theory" in other words, not speaking specifically about this new Apple app, nor do I have any sort of direct knowledge regarding how it actually is coded, or works. :p

QuickTime ported most of the toolbox (Carbon) to Windows years ago. And iTunes is another client of this.
In this case, however, what you're looking at is clearly a derivative/rebranded version of Proximity's Artbox, which was cross-platform already and acquired by Apple a while ago

It's as if they have have just left there computers behind and instead focused on the less exciting such as apple tv iphone. I mean , why the hell didnt jobs say anything at NAB to help mend our shattered hopes for a new os soon?

How can you even THINK that Apple is abandoning the Mac when they unveil an amazing suite of high-quality software for it???
Some people are just plain retarded. Grow up.

This sucks guess i got to go by a windows system now. Hope next time i need a new system it will be after they release some new products just can justify paying premium price for overdue hardware.
Did you really expect basic stuff at NAB...come on! Where is Apple behind? Merom is still being used, so iMac, MacBook and MacBook Pro are all good, Mac Pro is still a chip currently only Apple has so that perfect. Mac Mini is the only thing o overdue for an update, but its a low end Mac.
This whole Apple and Intel thing worked out well, but now we have the whole board saying "Intel say a new chip is coming soon, we must wait!", something we didn't have in the PPC days, people based the purchase off the speed of the computer, and if you only going to what the Mac Mini is for(Safari, iTunes, Pages, iPhote, iMovie ect), a Core Duo computer is more then you need!

In this case, however, what you're looking at is clearly a derivative/rebranded version of Proximity's Artbox, which was cross-platform already and acquired by Apple a while ago
Thanks for the info !
As for Quicktime for Windows, I thought they did it before OS X, with lots of Quickdraw behind the scenes. Are new Quartz-based APIs ported to Windows ? or does iTunes only use older API for compatibility ?
Sorry for being off-topic.

Why does this happen everytime Apple hosts a special event? These whiners really need to wake up and pay attention. What did you honestly expect at NAB? I expected a Final Cut update and that's exactly what we got. The NAB is strictly for professionals so quit the complaining.
And of course Apple is going out focus on the Apple TV and iPhone right now... they're brand new products! Do you know what it takes to release a product as huge as the iPhone? Obviously a lot if it means delaying their next major OS. Do you honestly think Apple wanted to delay Leopard? Of course not! Getting the iPhone out on time is their most important goal right now. If they miss the June mark, they're practically screwed.
So please... look at Apple from a bunsiness point of view, because they are a business. They have two markets to constantly satisfy: the consumers and the pro community. Our favorite company just happens to lead the way when it comes to professional software like Final Cut. You should recognize this. Their focues doesn't always have to revolve around the consumers.
And to the people threatening to purchase a Windows computer, go ahead and do it already. You're obviously not bright enough to get what's going on here, so you might as well join the "dark side."
Sorry to rant, but this happens every damn time. Unfortunately we have so many narrow-minded people who post here. God forbit Apple updates their pro software. Without their pro software we wouldn't be where we are today in terms of the entertainment industry. So like someone else said... grow up.

wow...that`s all i can say.
motion2 was the reason of our company`s sucsses. when it came out, we were one of the few componies who used apple softwares in iran. using these apps and the great maya we bacame a huge compony....
but time changed everything. similar apps came out for pc. suddenly we had to throw away our power pc macs and buy intel based macs. rumors about usa attacking iran made apple compters really expensive here.my personal mac pro cost me about 4000$.the orginal price was 2800$!. company`s lawyer told us we have to switch to pc or we`re dead!
of course we didint listen and spent most of our money buying mac pros. we bought 12 mac pro each one at the price of 4000! we lost LOTS and LOTS of money! it was crazy!
but after all, when i see motion3`s new increadble features i say to my self "we did the right thing!"
... cant wait to get my hands on motion3
That's pretty intense. I didn't realize it was legal for American computing companies to sell anything in or to Iran, given the embargo and sanctions on such products since the revolution. Must have been grey market.

Is it just me? I have been waiting for months for this event to finally see some new HW like iMac, Mac Mini, new screens, etc. Based on the rumor sides I really expected announcements, like last year. I cannot wait anymore on new HW, so probably have to buy second hand Mac Mini to use till the HW finally comes. Disappointed.
Yes, it is just you. If you have waited 'months' for this event, then you should be thrilled with the new pro video tools. If you were expecting this to be the venue for a large hardware announcement, well I guess you set yourself up for disappointment.

"what is has been" ? "mabye" ? "i'v" ? "there every move" ? "cant" ? "there computers" ? "didnt" ? Our "shattered hopes" ? ..... what about our terrible spelling, inadequate typing skills, atrocious grammatical errors and dimwitted hyperbole ?
It's all a bit taxing for the feeble-minded, this focus on one thing (to the exclusion of all else), isn't it?

I agree with pretty much everything you pointed out but Apple did it to itself by becoming a "Consumer Electronics Company". Consumers are notoriously fickle and tend to be very fair-weather... :o

I think there will be greater Blu-Ray support when they finally finalize their spec.; with respect to dynamic menus picture-in-picture and other object application, etc. Blu-Ray board just "adopted" BD-J as a standard last week, better late then never. So we should be seeing more software support in the coming months but there still is the problem of hardware cost, violet laser diodes are still relatively expensive.

Adobe just shat it's pants. First FCP took over, then DVD Studio Pro, then Soundtrack Pro, and now Motion finally got the overhaul it needed. Goodbye 3D stroke plugin, goodbye After Effects over Motion. It looks as if Apple did a great job copying After Effects in the 3D cameras and lights department. I just hope they get Trapcode to make plugins for Motion. Apple, just kill Livetype already, it should really just be built into Motion.
One more interesting thing, check out these videos (http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/) and tell me that is not Leopard's text to speech technology at work?
EDIT: I was wrong on the text-to-speech thing, it did sound slightly odd to me though. That would be sweet if Apple could actually secretly pull that off though, and then wow everyone a few days later with the news of how far text-to-speech technology has come.

God I dunno why people are complaining, this is amazing! I am soo excited bout FCS2, will make my life soo much easier. Motion 3 just looks like fun, god I love this industry...
The reason some are complaining is for legitimate reasons. There seem to be some apps that were not addressed with this upgrade. Logic and DVDSP are two notable ones. Also, everyone has their 'wish list' and not everyone gets what they want. Some are vocal about it.
However, much of the negativity is due to irrational expectations and the MS anti-Apple posting campaign. When Apple delayed release of Leopard, they smelled the 'blood in the water'. Better get used to it. They will seize on every subject to post their drivel.

it is grey market. actually we dont buy things from apple it self. in the case of mac pros we ordered them to another company in new york.they bought them and sent them to dubi (in middle east). and then they posted the computers to iran! and that`s how a 2800$ computer becomes a 4000$.
I believe the reason of these unacceptable prices is iranian goverment. i mean dell and hp can have branches in iran, why apple cant?
this has become a huge problem for apple users in iran. there is no REAL support for apple computers owner here.

Sorry to interject but I agree with your point. The switch to Intel by Apple has worked out really well, especially for its low and portible lines... Why? Because Apple finally has access to chipsets that'll allow it to realize its software asperations... aka native HD authoring, without the PPC FSB bottleneck but now the software is just now catching up to the hardware... the main thing holding me back from intelMac adoption was software and software... with creative suite 3 coming out and now apple FCPS upgrades, I think the time's getting extremely close to upgrade my powerbook.

That will probably be added in the next version of iTunes and the iTS. Then again DVD Studio Pro is exactly for what the name implies, creating DVDs. Apple did not decide on making subtitle tracks an option on a DVD a standard. I am not surprised at all that DVD Studio Pro didn't get updated, what is there to upgrade, when most of the authoring process has already been determined by the DVD Forum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD). I would bet on there being a free update late this year or early next year with DVD Studio Pro 4.5 featuring better HD support and a few new bells and whistles.

It's not...it's the same guy that did the tutorials in the Final Cut Studio package...he's masking his accent a little though...not quite as strong as in the Final Cut Studio tutorials.
