What do your close ones think of your MR habit?

I'm currently single so I'm exempt from answering. 😀 But my other side is getting annoyed with me at the mo... some people joke about me in the office but little do they know. 😉

Honestly, some of us do spend a lot of time here. What do your partners, friends or family think of your MR habits? Bemused tolerance or something a bit more fraught with problems? Do they think you're doing work when you're really talking a load of codswallop with a bunch of strangers?

Probably one of the top three relationship issues here (length of time spent on computer, not specifically MR however MR it a major factor)

Agreed. My fiancée gets some amusement out of my obsession, but there have been a few instances when she's been a bit upset about be spending time on MR when we're supposed to be together.

Sometimes when we're watching TV together and it's something I'm not engrossed in, I'll fire up MR. That definitely bugs her a bit.

She also gets annoyed when I won't put down the computer right away. But if I go away for 15 minutes before I'm done, I'll lose all my "View First Unread" placeholders! 😱
 
you just have to find a site that the significant other can get on. mine has one, but she just gripes about it to me, which i don't really care about. oh well, my wife thinks i'm a big old nerd anyway. she hates all of my hobbies.
 
Mine thinks I spend too much time on the computer. Not specifically MR, just too much time doing stuff that involves the computer in one way or another.
 
Grudging acceptance at first. Then she discovered her own forum to participate in, and was more understanding. It's kind of funny that we can both be sitting on the couch with our laptops, yet be worlds apart.

However, since then we had a kid, and my job got extra super busy, and neither of us gets a lot of forum time in. If I'm lucky I'll get a few minutes to peruse the online world before falling asleep, but usually I opt for sleep instead these days.

I think she's just happy I'm obsessed about computers and politics instead of porn.
 
I have followed this site for a while, and just recently started posting, but I have to admit it is addicting.

My main reason for coming back to it was because I am going to get a mbp for my wife. but I'M THE ONE THAT'S ADDICTED!

When she does get her computer, she will have to join this place as she'll be new to mac os x. ..... then i'll be the one laughing.... hahahahahahahahahaha (in that sinister Dark Helmet laugh)
 
My boyfriend has absolutely no problem with my MR surfing. #1 I'm not on here all that much. #2 it prevents him from having to face such atrocities such as "talking" or "communicating". 😀

I manage to find the odd L-Word here and there for my wife and let her watch it on my laptop. The other day a defunct MR page was up (no internet at home), and it was a totally tame page (not that I spend much time on risqué pages), and she had a mini-fit about it.

She's actually jealous about MR, which she doesn't understand. She thinks that since I participate, that I'm "chatting" with "girls" about "god knows what".
 
I think the woman thinks I'm a bit broken in the head -- more, I think she finds MR -- and any sense of connection I find in or from it -- wildly impractical (she participates in veterinary forums, but it's all "professional").

It all depends on the day, the time. Sometimes she'll particpate -- write posts with me. Other times, she'll be distant if not jealous.

We've had wonderful times with MR and we've had some good fights over it. Sort of like the dog, actually ...
 
my previous significant others thought it was amusing for the most part. but they do realize that i'm more tech savvy as a result and are able to help them with their problems more easily too, so they see that as a plus. and one has her own forum addiction now and totally understands how i feel about MR.

overall, not too much of a problem for me.
 
Friends say I am a geek... but they also have their obsessions so they can't really be exempt from my comments... Either way they don't really care.
 
Not an issue here. I usually stop perusing the site at 8pm when the gf is here and we spend time together. She will comment when I'm on early AM, as I'm an early riser and she's a sleeper. On weekends, I'm here while she watches her soap operas on my Tivo.

While my wife doesn't quite get the allure of a bunch of Mac geeks [not having seen all those pics of Devilot and PoD😛 ] chatting it up on teh intarwebs, she does appreciate that it helps me get a certain amount of geek out of my system...geek which she would otherwise have to put up with more directly.😀
 
Good idea for a thread: seems like a bit of an issue for many here. Ms Skunk is not enthusiastic but tolerates it as relatively harmless.

Yup, same here. MR itself used to be a big issue when I was on here more, but subsequently anything with the computer is a bit of a problem. I work from home these days too, so it's doubly difficult to keep away from it with e-mails pinging in all the time (I've now had to start turning off Mail at 6pm just to stay away from it!).

I find computers, be they for web surfing, application use or games (consoles or whatever) all tend to have a pretty negative effect on relationships.
 
They don't mention it. Real life tends to come first, just when I don't have much else to do or if i'm doing something which doesn't require 100% attention off to the forums I go.
 
I think my missus feels the same as skunk's.

She gets a bit miffed when we're about to leave for somewhere and I'm posting up until the very last second I can!
 
I spend most of my time in front of my 'puters (Macbook and Winblows desktop system) and I'm a member of a large number of forums. Most of my time is spent between Apple Insider, MacNN and MacRumors though and all my buds have started calling me an Apple fanboy. Maybe I am 🙂

The funny thing is that they are also the same buds that are so impressed with my Macbook that they are now also planning on buying one. When I'm at Uni, it doesn't take them long before commandeering my Macbook and playing with Comic Life all day.

The rest of my friends just roll their eyes when they see me reading through the posts on MR. They just can't understand how my Macbook purchase has changed my life. It really has been a wonderful experience moving over from Winblows.
