...we all know, what our favorite fruit (http://www.apple.com) is, BUT what are your favorite vegetables???

today I went downtown to our weekly farmers market and I bought some mushrooms, some salad and two kinds of tomatos.

YUM, vSpacken likes tomatos... tomatos tasty!!!

in my opinion, nothing beats tomatos, but you have to be careful. don't buy the really big ones (=taste like water), make sure you buy them from a local farmer (YUM! :) ) and don't let them get old, too soft and wrinkled (baaaah! )...

what kind of vegetables do you guys like best? share your thoughts.

BTW, I'm not a vegetarian... ;)

vSpacken

check these out, just cut'em and use some freshly grinded pepper and salt, maybe some olive oil and vinegar... Yummy!:

A tomato is a fruit. My favorite is kum tsing tsai, a chinese vegetable that translates to heartless vegetable. Cook it up in a wok with extra garlic and you have the best dish of all time. Take that and put it on rice with some black pepper dungeonous(sp?) crab and you have ecstasy!

Or did they get elected fruits again.

Is it me or is school politics and/or lunch menu ingredients confusing?

oooh. you can't beat asparagus, imo. but eggplant is terrific, too. holds texture and flavor very well. gut an eggplant, stuff it with rice, tomatoes, garlic, lemon juice and cumin, steam it for 45 minutes. good eating.

Yummy yummy artichokes! Steamed, boiled, or trimmed and fried. Thats my all time favorite vegetable. But I also like asparagus, sugar and snap peas, butternut squash, brussel sprouts (I know, I know, but I LIKE them if they are done right!) spinach, most lettuces, stuffed peppers, potatoes (many forms) and so many others!

Oh and for all you tomato lovers who don't already know, never refrigerate them. It kills the flavor. I only put them in the fridge if I cut into them and then don't use it all, but it's pretty rare that I don't eat the whole thing.:D

Hmmm........potatoes have always rocked my world, especially garlic smashed. However, artichokes and ginger are REALLY good, especially as spices. (Sorry folks, I consider ginger a root vegetable at the rate I eat it)

I'm a big fan of green beans and corn. I'm a bigger fan of tomatoes (even though they are really a fruit). Looking in my garden you will find 20 tomato plants (10 varities). Also a big, big fan of peppers (hot and sweet) and my garden contains 15 varities (about 40 plants).

I agree, I love tomatos, but sorry to disappoint you, they are a fruit (hint, anything that contains seeds and is the product of a plant is fruit, so cucumbers, squash, tomatos, they're all fruits). My favorite vegetable is probably lettuce or spinach. MMMMMM!!! But it takes a little salad dressing to be really good.

:) Favorite regular: cherry tomatoes

Other regulars, no complaints: raw carrots, green peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, don't-tell-übergeek-but-celery, corn, potatoes, cabbage, green beans

:) Occasional treats: grilled onion, spinach, asparagus, artichokes, and once in a rare while brussel sprouts

:) Treat eating out: Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce, even though I have no idea what oyster sauce is (I don't think it's made from oysters)

:( Aaaaaghh, I'm poisoned: cooked carrots or beets!

All that crap from those special markets isn't any fresher. Unless, like me, people farm a few miles from your house :)

I get some great GREAT tomatoes, grapes, watermelon, all fruits, not as many veggies. There are carrots and caloflower (sp?), nothing that great.

I LOVE tomatoes, I used to eat em for lunch. A tomatoe with salt and pepper...yum.

Right now, the only thing fresh off the crop that i have are grapes. My dad grows em :D

Get red grapes (the darker the sweeter, and the smaller/darker the better), and freeze em. Ohhhh...they are sooooo goood.

I remember growing up having fresh vegetable in the summer. My father and grandfather had a large garden. They planted tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, onions, corn, cabbage, peas, cantelope, and zuchini. My mother used to can tomatoes and green beans. Once she even tried to make ketchup. When we got a larger freezer she was able to save even more, it was like summer in the winter.

We planted carrots in our garden once when I was a kid. We got the tiniest carrots you've ever seen. A school class I was in planted radishes and turnips came up! (Apparently, seeds planted by another class in the same garden were sturdier than ours.) If I didn't know better, I'd think that supermarkets have the real vegetables and home-grown ones are poor in comparison.

It's with age that problems occur, the artery looses elasiticity. The new guidelines from the American Heart Association maintain that a BP >120/80 is now considered to be pre-hypertension. No treatment is needed, just to monitor and watch the diet.

Isn't that kind of like redefining "overweight" to make more people overweight? The American Heart Association wants to think it's important, so they change the statistics to give more people hypertension :)

In all seriousness, though, I don't constantly eat double bacon cheeseburgers. But you have to indulge yourself sometimes. What's the point of being in shape if you have to deprive yourself? There is nothing wrong with indulging your cravings. Life would be worth living if you had to follow a strict healthy diet all the time. Even dieticians allow for cravings. No one could stay on a heatlhy diet long term if splurging wasn't allowed. Food is something that should be enjoyed, it is part of our social interaction!

i like artichokes a lot. cooked in loose salty water (intere), then eaten slice by slice - best when shared with another person, dipped to balsamic vinegar ... takes ages to eat but is good.

also asparagus is so good. it will make your liquids stink the next day but it feels and tastes good and is good for you.

i like also cabbage, especially as saurkraut. and tomatoes .. i use them a lot, even for a mushroom sauce .. i never use cream, and rarely any oil so tomatoes add taste to about everything. and corns .. yum. and peppers... peppers cooked with blsamic vinegar are great.

what else..? i like most of the dark green vegetables. the darker and more taste the better. artichokes seem to be the nr 1 as they have a lot of taste (that you beed to get used to first) and a lot of good stuff. the dark tastes need vinegar and i admit i use it a lot (also because i have a bad digestion) ...

oh i forgot the onions. can't eat them. they make me sick - and if i by mistake eat something that has them on 2 consequent days, i'm really sick for like 4-5 days, my stomach won't digest anything and generally (even after 1 thging having onions) i get like a 102-fever, get red and everywhere of me seems to have painfully lot of liquids (that's probalby only one lb but it's still painful) and i just feel sick and vomit .. so i really eat nothing with onions.

garlic has a similar effect, but not as bad so sometimes i just have to deal with it. (the onions disturb as well on the same plate, salad etc). and so do cucumber and melons. weird. melons i seem to tolerate but only when i havent eaten anything else and will not eat anything else for many hours before and after.

Do any of you know somebody with a peanut allergy? I've heard about the kids who get very sick if they eat something with only a hint of peanuts, such as a sandwich prepared on a breadboard previously used to make a peanut butter sandwich. I don't see how kids with this unfortunate condition manage to survive childhood.

In recent years, airlines have been serving pretzel snacks instead of peanuts. Maybe it's simpler cheaper, or maybe they want to avoid medical emergencies from people with peanut allergies.

Peanuts? Wierd.

Doctor Q
Jul 1, 2003, 02:34 AM
From the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/food.htm):In adults, the most common foods to cause allergic reactions include: shellfish such as shrimp, crayfish, lobster, and crab; peanuts, a legume that is one of the chief foods to cause severe anaphylaxis, a sudden drop in blood pressure that can be fatal if not treated quickly; tree nuts such as walnuts; fish; and eggs.

Many allergy-producing foods such as peanuts, eggs, and milk, appear in foods one normally would not associate them with. Peanuts, for example, are often used as a protein source and eggs are used in some salad dressings. The FDA requires ingredients in a food to appear on its label. People can avoid most of the things to which they are sensitive if they read food labels carefully and avoid restaurant-prepared foods that might have ingredients to which they are allergic. In highly allergic people even minuscule amounts of a food allergen (for example, 1/44,000 of a peanut kernel) can prompt an allergic reaction. Other less sensitive people may be able to tolerate small amounts of a food to which they are allergic.1/44,000 of a peanut???

What I mean is that a big part of the liberal agenda is "political correctness" but really it is not that at all. Its modern fascism. Look at the hate free zone concept. Someone has taken it upon themselves to say this is a hate free zone. Thats literally fascism. Its oppressive control at its best. I have a right to hate you such, is is america, I just cannot hurt you. But thanks to the concept of the hate-free zone, the concept of freedom of speech is the liberal definition of "Freedom of speech". Ok now I am sorta rambling.

What I am trying to get at Frohickey is that this fascism, this oppressive rule, pervades through America, and its not in the name of political correctness, it is in the name of a liberal agenda. I hope that made sense.

its late.

Liberal agenda? Ha, that's seriously funny!

Look at it this way: You're free to say anything you want, and someone else is free to kick your ass for saying it. ;)

In recent years, airlines have been serving pretzel snacks instead of peanuts. Maybe it's simpler cheaper, or maybe they want to avoid medical emergencies from people with peanut allergies.

Nothing is as bad as the worcester sauced something-snacks that British Airways serves on all their intercontinental flights. They are really bad.

what's funny is that the "liberal agenda" is what's keeping people from speaking up... when it's the liberal protesters (people who are speaking up) who are being beaten and told to shut up

it's funny when people spew what rush tells them.....

peanuts are very allergic.... hence the reason they have to list anytime that something was manufactured anywhere NEAR where peanuts are processed...

Not to the 1/44'000 level of sickness but i really get sick of onions. Picking them out of a salad isn't enough, i still get sick. Having them on tabasco makes me sick. And 99 % of all airline meals make me sick, i think i'll have to go to fruit meals there (and ask for no melon then). I guess onion allergy isn't one of the most common ones, but the stomach like a football, pain in stomach and everyehrere, up to 102 fever and getting a lot of liquids everywhere (maybe just 1 lb but painful still) isn't really feeling fine, and i really don't want to know what would happen if i would eat an onion.

Kissing someone that has eaten onions isn't much better.

yes, that is also funny. it is hard to find candies that dont have written in the ingredients that they are packed or processed in equipment that also is used for processing nuts, whey, milk, soy etc. so probably only peppermint candies made and packed in a factory that makes and packs only those candies are the only "safe choise" (of course for those that eat sugar).

i hate when i forgot to suspect that weird products (like candies that are raeally supposed not to have) could have some wheat. wheat should be in the same thing (possible allergenics) though they are sure harder to avoid.

Unfortunately, I can't eat tomatoes. I am allergic to an enzyme contained in tomatoes.

My grandmother had that problem, she complained of the acid. She loved tomatoes, they had a garden so had fresh vegetables all summer. You might try what she did, yellow tomatoes. She always said they had less acid and are delicious!
