My repair permissions is going crazy with changes. Can't believe how many.

Second pass none. Restart Required  :( No Thanks. I'll wait 'til I have a break I can afford to reboot in. I wish Safari had a memory for all the windows and tabs that are open so you could restart it from where you left it last. Is that in Leopard's Safari anyone know?

I strongly suggest rebooting as soon as possible. Applications will start breaking due to changes in Keychain Management. (More specifically it is probably the Login Window changes.)

Restart took very long. Stayed for a few minutes at the grey screen with the Apple logo, then went black again, started again (on its own) and continued to start up in a more normal fashion.
I had logged out and back in just before running software update.

(MBP 2.33, 160 GB, 2 GB, installed the Aperture 1.5.3 update at the same time).

After restarting my MacBook after installation, I seemed to hang on the Apple start screen for quite a while. My laptop restarted once again, and then went straight to the login screen.

Very odd. All seems fine now though.

A plugin for Safari called SafariStand (http://hetima.com/safari/stand-e.html) that already does it. :)

i have an iBook G4 and this update hosed up my airport or something. after my restart it won't automatically find the wireless networks and when i connect to a network, nothing happens. this happened a while ago and i had the wrong network password, but that's been fixed since then. when i try to open up internet connect, i have to force quit it b/c it freezes. any suggestions?

do i have to plug it into my wall charger or something silly like that?

Edit: i went to a party and came back. i turned on the computer and it worked. whatever.

Ok my iMac 24 is just hanging on the white screen! NO apple logo! What do I do?

Arggg, held down the power button to close it, turned it back on and its still haging on the white screen!!!! ( I did this twice already!)

Edit: Ok, I reset teh SMC and now I see the apple logo! It seems to be working...

What a great update, lol

Edit #2: mine rebooted twice also.

Everything is up and running now...overall it was an inconvenience becuase I had to unplug all the stuff I had pluggen into the back of hte iMac!

Why would you need a security update for a Mac?? I plan on switching from Windows for, among other reasons, the fact that OSX already is secure. Isn't it??

Installed, rebooted, no sweat, no strain on two different machines. (iMac G4 & G5).

Might I suggest restarting the machine, then installing the update, and then restart again. I had both of mine update shortly after very recent reboots. Like I said, absolutely problem-free; no permissions issues, Keychain, Spotlight, nuttin'...

Repaired Disk Permissions before the update : no repairs needed.

Repaired Disk Permissions after the update: no repairs needed.

Fine by me.

I installed the Security Update on one of my imaged machines. I'll see if Apple releases another version of this update before pushing it to other Macs.

Video Conference,

I want to know if video conference scales to HDTV if you have the hardware and network bandwidth to support it? If so, it could replace some really expensive vertical solutions.

My 15" MBP stalled on the apple boot up screen, then it restarted again, then the login screen popped up, it was kind of strange. Don't get discouraged if it takes a while to reboot.

As long as humans are involved with writing code, no system will ever be completely secure. It's not a black-or-white situation - it's all about shades of gray. OS X is quite secure by default... it's just not perfect.

Not to mention that some of the security fixes are not Mac-centric. The Kerberos vulnerability, for one - any OS that uses MIT's Kerberos implementation will have that vulnerability. This would also be the case, for example, with bugs in Samba or the CUPS printing system (I'm not saying there are currently bugs in those sub-systems; just using them for examples of OS X components that are used in other operating systems as well).

Why would you need a security update for a Mac??

Because there are always things people miss, so software is insecure, it's made by humans so is inperfect, though it seems Apple does a good job of fixing issues before they get exploited which makes it more secure.

I had that hang up too, where the restart took forever. Does anyone know what causes this?

anyway no need to brag, but my windows PC has been up for about two months, and my mac has been shut down, about twice... Then again I never use the pc, and my mac is a notebook. :P

When I buy my SR mbp in june (:p), will I have to install a boatload of updates or will the version of 10.4.9 that comes with it be a new build which has them all rolled in?

This is one of those important updates that some won't do... and then they'll have a problem a few months down the road... and it will make the news that Apple OSX is susceptible to viruses:eek:

I'm showing Aperture update as well 1.5.3 129mb

Ditto on the Aperture Update.

Aperture 1.5.3 addresses issues related to overall reliability and performance in a number of areas, including:

Generation of thumbnails for adjusted images
Entering and exiting Full Screen mode
Working with large sets of keywords in the Keywords HUD
Restoring from a vault

Among the specific issues that have been addressed:

Previews now update properly when images are sent to an external editor.
Leaf Aptus 22 and Aptus 75 images are now imported with the correct orientation.
When folders are imported as projects, the folder structure is now correctly preserved when identically named subfolders are included in the hierarchy.
Reconnecting referenced images that have been externally edited now works more reliably.
Setting the ColorSync profile in the Aperture Print dialog now correctly suppresses color management settings in the Mac OS X Print dialog.

Why would you need a security update for a Mac?? I plan on switching from Windows for, among other reasons, the fact that OSX already is secure. Isn't it??

Rich

You're kidding, right?
One of the reasons the OS is (and stays) secure is because Apple is constantly updating it.

You'll never, ever, EVER be 100% secure without ever taking your normal precautions.

No OS is 100% secure. 100%? No.

When I buy my SR mbp in june (:p), will I have to install a boatload of updates or will the version of 10.4.9 that comes with it be a new build which has them all rolled in?

Depends on how many mbp's they have with the 10.4.6 version already.
You'd figure they'd update it all the way to 10.4.9; they've been doing it since they released Tiger, but I don't know how long it'd take.

Since you're new here, you may not know thie kind of restart after applying some updates is not unusual. :) Always need patience when you apply any updates that require a reboot. :)

It's installing system files via a special boot process. That's the reason it hangs there for so long and then reboots. There is a folder created in your system folder called "Install On Reboot" or something of that nature after running these updates.

Then when I updated that to 10.4.9 (using the combo) it restarted twice, (the first time I gort the Apple screen for a long time, then it went black and restarted.
This securaty update simply took a long time to restart.

What you're describing is normal. It's related to the update process. When it's appearing to "hang" at the grey screen, it's actually continuing activities related to the upgrade. I'm not sure why, but there was one update in between 10.4.0 and 10.4.9 that initiated a double restart (like the one you describe). None of that is anything to be concerned about.

Just installed here, no problems.
However, I restarted my MBP before I ran the update - uptime had been 16 days, so I wanted to install on a freshly restarted system.
The installation and restart did take a bit - especially at the gray loading screen, but this is kind of expected out of the majority of security updates I've done from Apple.
Updates are always welcome.

You mean like FireFox has had since 2.0? And before that via an extension? Yes, that is a great feature and I certainly do wish that Safari had it. Or at least the ability to have multiple home pages like in FF.

I managed to update my iMac 20 C2D and a Macbook 1.83 with this new update. Everything seems fine with the iMac but the Macbook.... ouch. Everything changed.

Here's a list of some changes that occured:
- Dock Reset itself with iMovie icon missing from Dock?!
- iTunes load up as if I never touched it before with the Agreement opening page!?
- On the Finder window, the left panel where you have the icons for Applications, Documents, Music, Movies etc.... the default bottom four (Docs, Movies, Music, Pictures) on the left had a generic blue folder instead of the default icons Mac OS has.
- Safari's bookmarks are gone.
- Basically the whole system reset happened after the 2 bootups during installation.
- Music in the Music folder suddenly disappeared.

and probably much more.... :(

Has anyone experienced this after the software update?? I guess I have to reinstall the OS again for the 2nd time in 3 months. Blah.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can recommend this general system maintenance/troubleshooting util--can be useful (followed by a restart) for miscellaneous occasional OS X problems:

YASU
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21674

(I haven't tried this update yet, but if I do and see problems, YASU is where I will turn first. It forces your machine to do a bunch of tasks that normally get done automatically but rarely. It also repairs permissions and can dump caches.)

Since you're new here, you may not know thie kind of restart after applying some updates is not unusual. :) Always need patience when you apply any updates that require a reboot. :)

It could be that the update needs to change something that can only be changed when the system is not running. So the sequence is: You start the update. Part 1 of the update is installed. The updater tells the system that on the next reboot, not the system should be started, but part two of the updater. You reboot. When the Mac starts again, part two of the updater runs, and it reboots the machine automatically.

Kind of interesting that this update is for 10.4.9 only. I'm still running 10.4.8, so, apparently, no security update needed for me.

Makes me wonder if they rushed 10.4.9 out the door a little too soon.

You are wondering wrong. The list of fixes is all in components that have been there for ages, so all problems that get fixed are present in 10.4.8 as well.

Most likely Apple wants you to upgrade to 10.4.9 first. Otherwise Apple has to make sure that the security update works with 10.4.8, and they have to make sure that an upgrade to 10.4.9 works on a system with 10.4.8 with this security update installed. And all for no good purpose at all, just because you don't want to install 10.4.9. And this update seems to be a more difficult one anyway, one that required two reboots on many machines. Apple surely doesn't want to introduce any complications into that process.

ok I need some serious help. I did the update, every looks fine.

The strange thing is: The only people having problems with temperature and fan speed seem to be those that have all these little utilities installed, and everyone else is fine. I have the impression that trying to solve a problem might actually be causing a problem here.

I expect that the long delay in starting up is the system repairing permissions. If you don't restart and repair permissions after installing the update, I suspect that Disk Utility will chuck out all kinds of repairs. That's because they would usually get fixed when you startup next time. Which is why Apple says you should restart your computer immediately :)

I expect that the long delay in starting up is the system repairing permissions. If you don't restart and repair permissions after installing the update, I suspect that Disk Utility will chuck out all kinds of repairs.

Not that one again...

With every update, the system gets a list of files to install, and a list of which permissions each file should have. In very early updaters, the updater sometimes got things wrong, and some files wouldn't have the permissions they were supposed to have. "Repair permissions" goes through that list of permissions again, and checks that each file has the permission it is supposed to have, and fixes it if needed.

The only time that a file installed by the updater would have the wrong permissions is if the updater made a mistake. Newer updaters (any updaters written in the last three years) don't make these mistakes anymore. And even if they did, then "Repair permission" could make exactly the same mistake, because both the updater and "Repair permission" take exactly the same list of files and permissions.

(Permissions are just ten bits or so that the file system keeps for every file. There is one bit each that allow the owner of the file to read the file, write to the file, or execute the file. And another three bits for the group that the owner belongs to, and another three bits for everyone else, and a few others. It's nothing that could "break" and be repaired, the only thing that "repair permissions" can do is check the permissions against a list which file should have which permissions).

You must be new here. A lot of mac users think that "repairing permissions" (which resets the permissions of a lot of system utilities they never use to the permissions they were given at Apple) makes their computer run better or fixes problems. Very rarely is this the case, but then again, people also think wearing magnetic bracelets makes them healthy.

A lot of mac users think that "repairing permissions" (which resets the permissions of a lot of system utilities they never use to the permissions they were given at Apple) makes their computer run better or fixes problems. Very rarely is this the case, but then again, people also think wearing magnetic bracelets makes them healthy.

Well, it's been shown already that repairing permissions may avoid many problems...most people having issues after updates DON'T repair permissions before or after...so this must be, AT THE VERY LEAST, harmless.

By the way, this update was FLAWLESS (as usual for Apple)...30 seconds to download and install, 1 minute to reboot, permissions repaired before and after...simply PERFECT!

...I wish Safari had a memory for all the windows and tabs that are open so you could restart it from where you left it last. Is that in Leopard's Safari anyone know?

I don't know but it saves my butt a few times when Firefox crashed... ;)

Hey guys. I'm new to Macs, (three weeks and counting). When I installed the update on my Mac Pro, it went abouth three minutes on the grey screen, then rebooted. Then it hung on the grey screen for about thirty minutes until I decided to just reboot it myself. Should I have not done this? Everything seems to be working fine. Should I try doing the update again, or just leave well enough alone?

Updates get installed with administrator privileges they will not be affected by permission issues. They will write their own permission over it.

At lot of it is myth based on rumor based on misunderstanding... :D

That sounds like strange behavior to me.

You may want to consider downloading the update from Apple (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/) and running it again just to make sure it fully succeeded.

Have just posted for help here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=298374)

Macbook and Mac Pro both picked up a 16.7Mb update and the Powerbook got a 10Mb file.

Intel 2x reboots
PPC 1x reboot

I wonder if anyone could enlighten us as to the reason for the difference here. I have noticed on some Windows updates that this is also the case. Does the PPC chipset interact with the OS differently than Intel? I know that there is a Hardware Abstraction Layer in Windows that separates much of the OS from the hardware, and I'm assuming that something similar is going on with the Intel version of the MacOS.

I also know that files may be in use when a system update is applied, so they must be copied in during startup after a rudimentary kernel is loaded up. If it is a large update, this can obviously take some time. On Intel machines, has this kernel also had to be updated, thereby requiring the second reboot?

And just for the record, I installed the update fine on both my iMac G5 and my PowerBook G4, without touching permissions. (As someone else mentioned, I thought they had fixed that problem/requirement, so I don't do it anymore) Thanks to FiOS, it downloaded nice and FAST.

PPC machines boot radically differently than Intel machines. PPC uses Open Firmware, whereas Intel uses EFI. All machines have some form of HAL, it allows the OS to interact with the hardware. Basically the boot-up process goes:
Power --> POST --> OpenFirmware/EFI --> Bootstrapper & HAL --> Rest of OS (kernel, then everything else).

The bigger update for Intel hints that there may be more being updated here, and an updated kernel sorta makes sense. It does because of the dual reboot, but it doesnt because I don't think Apple would update the kernel in a security update. Besides the kernel on Intel and PPC is the same, its just compiled differently. Methinks theres some other difference between Mac OS X on PPC and Mac OS X on Intel...what else explains the bigger updates? Or, alternatively, there could just be more broken with Intel Macs and Apple haven't had the time to iron out the bugs yet :p. However, Mac OS X for PPC and Mac OS X for Intel were developed concurrently, so theres some missing piece of the puzzle here.

Installed over lunch on my Powerbook 1.67 G4. No problems. Pretty fast reboot, too. And didn't even see a bunch of weird stuff when repairing permissions. In sum: Yay Apple!

Anyway, so far so good. I'm curious why the intel update was significantly larger myself.

Any solutions that works like how Vienna handles tabs. Doesn't bother the user just keeps them. I tried ForgetMeNot but got very annoyed with it asking me everytime i closed Safari.

Do not run this update if you are running 10.3.
Many people including me are having serious Airport connectivity problems afterward that do not seem to have a remedy.
Many posts already on apples discussions about this already.
Too bad my first post has to be a bad one.....

All is not right in Security Update 2007-004 land. My Panther 800mz G3 iBook will connect to the internet on initial boot. However, after wake up from sleep the Airport cannot find local wireless network. Reboot solves issue, but what a pain. Is next fix at least a month away?

Reboot does not solve this issue permanently. As soon as sleep is induced your airport is gone again at wake-up.
That seems to be exactly the problem most are having if they run 10.3. Which I do on a few older (2003) machines. But I seems to be OS related as even g4 powerbook users are having the same problem. I would look for a TON of posts about this as people run the update this weekend.

Maybe it is Apple's way of telling us G3 Panther owners that it is time to upgrade our software and/or hardware. Sad that such issues were not caught prior to release of the update by a Fortune 500 company.

An additional thought. Maybe the "competent" software engineers are working on the iPhone as opposed to the "core" business.

If after installing Security Update 2007-004 on OS10.3.9 and after waking from Sleep you experience a kernel panic notification (black pane) to reboot with the power button ......... do the following:

Reboot .... then apply /App/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair Permissions .... shut down .... Reboot while holding down Command-Option-P-R keys together until the computer chimes three(3) individual times ... release keys to complete reboot .... Repair Permissions again ... click the soft Restart .... Sleep the computer then wake it up .... the kernel panic pane should be gone.

It worked for me and I never before had a panic pane on a 15"FP iMac!

My feeling is if the machiine natively supports the OS's system requirements then it better work. Were not talking about a five year piece of harware or software . The posters with problems are beginning to pile up on the apple discussion group .

1 - administrator privileges mean a different set of permissions which may get messed up as well;

2 - almost any update (Apple or not) mess up with permissions afterwards; that's why they show up in Disk Utility.

AGAIN: at the very least, Repair Permissions is HARMLESS. Always do it and you're gonna have fewer problems than the "skeptics".

I'm not sure what you mean... I don't know what Vienna is. :o

I think I use Taboo to get a prompt asking me if I want to close multiple tabs (I want that), but I don't think SafariStand does any prompting. I think it just closes Safari, and when you re-open, you get the workspace back. Let me check.

EDIT: Stand does not prompt you on closing. What it does do, however, is prompt you on re-opening, like this:

Not sure you'll like that. :( Sorry. Might explore PimpMySafari.com to see if there are other options.

Just installed on both my Macs. No issues on the iMac G5. MacBook Pro, on the other hand, rebooted twice and wouldn't boot after the second time. Turns out the cause was my iPod. Disconnecting it made the MBP boot. Weird.

I'm glad to see we're not alone. My wife's G3 iBook (10.3.9) is exhibiting the same behavior: after waking from sleep, no wireless networks can be found, but rebooting solves the problem. (Interestingly, a very quick sleep -- just a few seconds -- didn't cause the networks to go away.)

This is in need of a patch NOW!

I hear people are having airport problems, but is anyone having firefox page display problems after installing the update? Safari is just fine, but i uploaded a screen shot of what macrumors looks like on firefox after the security update. Everything was peachy before I installed the update and the reboot went well.

A solution to the 10.3.9 wake-from-sleep Airport problem!

On the Apple Support forums, someone noticed that an error was being generated along the lines of "Airport already loaded." So he looked in /System/Library/Extensions and found more than one .kext file with a name beginning with "AppleAirPort." Removing all but the newest one fixes the problem (after one last restart).

Why would you need a security update for a Mac?? I plan on switching from Windows for, among other reasons, the fact that OSX already is secure. Isn't it??

I installed security update 2007-004 on an iMac running Mac OS 10.3.9 and got a kernel panic during startup each time after that. The computer was unusable.

Reseting PRAM and NVRAM seems to have fixed the problem for me completely.

Thanks to macweaver.com for the idea.

Has anyone ran across this issue? My wifes Macbook (specs below) got updated with 2007-004. It wouldn't boot into OS X. After trying to boot from the install disc and a few other things (reseting pram etc) it booted. But now every so often (Seems like every couple of days) my wifes Mac sorta freezes. The screen goes black, and the mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. The sleep light is unlit until you close the lid. Then it stays bright (the system doesn't go to sleep). The only way we know of thus far is to Hold the power button down and restart the system (which I assume isn't good for the computer in the long run).

I have cleared her cache, and am now looking to reinstall 10.4.9. Should I just ignore the update? Maybe something went funky with the files. I noticed that she had a bunch of programs running after I had already installed the update, the system looked like it had a hard time closing some of them (Neo Office, Safari, and iChat). Maybe something there had hosed the system stuff.

Anyways, thanks for the help.

I just posted this to another thread, but I've had problems with this update, although never any issues with other updates. After restarting the screen was very dark. For some reason it set screen brightness all the way to dark during the update. Now, the camera keeps coming on with a drum like beat. I don't know how to turn the camera off. Help! I tried going to photo booth thinking closing it out there would work, but I can't even open photo booth because the camera is in use. I've restarted to turn it off, but then the drums start back and I'm on display again. HELP!

This is for an iMac purchased just about a year ago.

I ran updates last night and installed the 2007-004 security update, and an update for Aperture to 1.5.3..

Now when I turn my MBP on, the system will show the desktop, menu bar, and dock.. but it takes an additional 30-45 seconds to show the desktop icons and the menu items in the upper right hand screen, as well as doesn't allow me to do anything until it shows all this stuff. Just kind of hangs for this time period.

Never did it prior. What is up? What should I do to remedy?

I've never understood the hatred or irrational fear of re-booting a personal computer. I mean, I thought only the hard-core GNU/Linux crowd was manic about uptime stats...
