Just a tip for avoiding pointless discussions with ignorant genius bar staff:
Call Apple support BEFORE bringing your macbook to the store. They are aware of the problem and will give you a record number which entitles you to free repair. In case a genius bar employee refuses to cooperate, just throw the number at him, and he'll be good.

Same crack on my white MacBook. Went to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store today. My warranty expired 6 months ago. They replaced the lower case for free. Had to wait about 45 minutes for the repair to be completed.

I'm just wondering, if i happen to go to the apple store, *reserve a genius bar* are they going to fix the macbook crack defect? my sister's macbook has cracks on both left and right palm rest... and they're familiarly even, it's sort of weird how it's even on both sides. same length...
My sister's macbook is the 2.16ghz c2d m-2007 whitebook.
will apple still take care of it??
No warranty what so ever on this WhiteBook

If you book an appointment and head in, they will most likely fix it. IF the computer looks like its been abused, maybe not. They have replaced mine twice, both out of warranty. If the tech is there, they can fix it in <20 mins.

I just had the lower case replaced on an '06 white CD MacBook still under AppleCare. Tucson Genius Bar agreed to replace it - no in store repair however, had to wait 5 days. I mentioned a couple annoying stuck pixels and got a new display too.

i bought a used macbook with applecare that doesn't expire until dec 2010. i called applecare and reregistered the macbook under the new owner, me. i asked if the lower casing is cracked, will apple replace it? they said if it is cosmetic damage, they will not fix it. they said applecare is only for defective hardware. so i'm going to take it into the applestore and get a guy to look at it for me. do i need an appt for that? which local los angeles/oc store has good success at replacing a cracked lower casing(near rear vent and palmrest? also, doesn't applecare cover the macbook cracking? has there been an official press release or anything about the macbook cracking or palmrest discoloration replacement program?

There isn't really a program covering this issue, it's just something that every Apple Store (and authorised repair centre) has been informed about.
None of Apple's warranties cover cosmetic damage, but in this case there is a design flaw with the product and as such it should be replaced for you free of charge both in AND out of warranty.

My MacBook had cracked in about 3-4 different areas. The top case (of course), all along the bottom of the computer, and behind the computer where the vents are located two tiny chunks of plastic had come off (right beside the hinges). Called Apple last Friday and explained to them my situation and they agreed to fix the computer, even though the warranty ran out in March. They shipped me a box yesterday, and I check today and see that it's already on it's way back to me. That gives me confidence in purchasing Apple products over and over again. I'm already eyeing a lovely new 13" MacBook Pro... :D

i have a macbook 2007 still in warranty until dec 2010 and apple will not cover my lower case cracks. they are hairline cracks. my cracks are right below the palm rest and in the rear vent area. my palm rests have not cracked yet. i called applecare and they said casing cracks are cosmetic and is not covered under applecare warranty. i went to the apple store in brea, california with an appointment. i showed the so called genius person the macbook and he had to take it to the techs in the back. he came out later and told me apple won't cover it. it is cosmetic damage does not affect the functionality. apple used to cover it but NOT ANYMORE. he said it was normal wear and tear. idiots! is there an official apple press release or anything that mentions macbook cracks? I'M SO MAD.

Oh craaap. So I have the same palmrest crack on my blackbook from 2007 and since my city had no apple store and I thought this might have been my fault, I used some industrial strength crazy glue. And NOW, I'm finding out my city is getting an apple store and I'm still under warranty/Apple care, so I'm wondering if it's likely they're still replace my case? It's really unappealing to look at, but I had to glue it or else the piece was definitely going to fall out and I was afraid the insides would be exposed. Should I call Apple Support ahead of time and explain to them? I'm feeling pretty stupid now for not sending my macbook in as soon as it happened, but it's my only computer and I desperately need it for university every day.

Got my laptop back this evening. Looks better than before, but Apple only replaced the top case. I thought they were going to replace the whole casing since it's all cracked, but at least they fixed the part that was bugging me the most. I might buy the other parts off eBay and get a friend of mine to install them for me.
Unfortunately, my new keyboard looks like it's sunken a little bit in the middle. Oh well, I'll eventually learn to with it. Can't be shipping my laptop back and forth to Apple over little things.

Okay so unfortunately my WhiteBook is starting to crack on the plamrest.
it's still there, but the piece is like hanging now. it's like I can pull it out anytime, and the crack will just show up...
It's the right side palmrest of my macbook, do you think apple will still cover it?
thanks for anyone who can help. I'll see if i can get photo's of it

So a bit of the plastic just chipped off of the bottom right corner of my topcase. This isn't the part where the magnets are, will it still be covered? I'm still under Applecare and have already had my topcase replaced before for palmrest cracks. Also, the nearest Apple store is an hour away and small so I doubt they would have the part in stock, should I call and see if they can order it before I come in? TIA!

You may try to call AppleCare and while on the phone email them a photo with the damage, they'll tell you whether or not they can cover it.

I'm coming up on my 4th time being repaired. Last time I got it repaired they said it was a newly designed palm rest that shouldn't crack, but it did. If you have the same problem with a machine 3 or more times apple will likely offer to replace the whole machine, however you may have to ask/demand politely and firmly.

Usually if you are in for the same problem over and over and over, at some point they may offer a replacement machine. My old iBook had a logic board issue, and it was replaced twice, finally they gave me a new machine, and new AppleCare to go with it.

A pair of questions regarding having the top case replaced...
1) Would this result in getting a new keyboard/trackpad?
2) Is there anything I can do prior to visiting my Genius Bar tomorrow to "help" them decide to replace it, like clean the keyboard or anything like that? If so, any tips on how to clean the keyboard?

Does anyone know how much Apple would charge to replace a casing (only the top for me) that's not for repair reasons for a machine under warranty? I'm getting scratches which, sooner or later, are going to become grisly. I'm just curious.

I don't think it will eventually get cracks but all models up to the new unibody are prone to. I'm pretty sure some users who have a white/black MacBook don't have any cracks.

I just bought a refurbed 2.13. It came with a few bonuses like 4gb ram and 500GB hard drive. My wife and I use it as a second computer and backup. Then I wondered if I should return it and get the newest model as I didn't want to have to worry about the top case cracks. Think I'll keep what I have as it was a super deal and hope for no cracks:) Thanks for the reply.

ooooooh I'm pissed! I treat my mac with tender-loving care (like many people do) & this happened! I'm taking it in on Thursday at 10AM, I have a customer number & everything. The phone rep was trying to sell the phone support, i'm like ....umm NO, i'll get applecare when i'm ready (next month).
What i'd really love is if they said "this is really damaged, we can't fix it" and give me the NEW white Macbook with the Glass Trackpad! Wishful thinking but i'm free to dream!:p lol I hope they can fix it.

Took my 2.13 in recently, and they replaced it within 20 minutes with a new topcase. They said they had some thicker replacement units in the back which should hopefully solve the cracking problem.
My experience for a minor repair is to get a genius bar reservation as soon as they open on a weekday like you did to hopefully get a quick in store while you wait fix.

I lived with my MacBook keyboard cover cracked for several months because there was no Apple Store in Cardiff Wales. Well, that all changed recently with the new St. David's Apple Store (it is great looking btw). I took in my U.S. bought MacBook. After a 10 second inspection (to rule out other damage such as dropping the laptop etc), the genius ordered a U.S. replacement cover (yes, it comes with keyboard and trackpad) at no cost to me. It arrived in one day and the next day my MacBook was returned to me looking all brand new. I could not be more delighted. Apple, by now, knows about the crack and does not need convincing to replace it.
Now I have to be careful not to slam the lid down.

So, they gave me new topcase & told me the same things about the thicker replacement units. I'm happy that they didn't give me any problems.
As I sat & waited for my computer to come out from the back...I saw computers with MAJOR problems(cracked screens, broken keys etc,). So, I was patient..and it paid off because it was free.
So what that I didn't get the new one with the glass trackpad...i'll live! lol;)
Thanks for the reassurance!

Awesome. I just got home from school and i opened my macbook to find my first 1 inch crack on the bottom case.
A question to those who replaced their case: How bad was the condition of your case that you could get Apple to replace it for free. I can't take a pic of my computer cuz my camera for some reason isn't good at all for macro shots but yeah, i do have a one inch grayish crack to the left of my track pad.
I found a image on google and it looks exactly like that except approximately only one inch

Buy your favorite color of velcro and cut some strips of the furry side and stick em below the "line". Now when I shut my macbook, it gives that satisfying "close sound" that my unibody companion makes. :D

I didn't realize that this cracked palm rest was such a common problem. I have the crack on the right palm rest and up by one of the magnetic line things. The closest Apple Store to me is like 200 km away, if I happen to be in Toronto with my MacBook (which could be soon) will they fix my MacBook even though it's out of warranty? Technically I am still under Best Buy's warranty, but they will send it away and say it will be 6 weeks, so I'm only going to use that for issues I can't live with.

6 weeks is bogus. They said the same for me, but with my gateway. It took 10 days. The issue is that the thing had too much dust in it, and the Geeks used a compressor and broke the fan. Then they sent it out. They repair depot said they got more dust out and put in a new fan. It came back missing 3 screws, and a weak hinge. They sent it out again, and it took 10 days. So 6 weeks isn't true.

My macbook top case cracked for the second time (palmrest). Between the first and second cracking, my bottom case started cracking too, around the hinge and in the front. I'm out of warranty but had heard a rumor that Apple had started replacing the bottom cases out of warranty so I decided to go to the Apple store and try my luck.
The genius said no problem on replacing the top case again BUT there was no way they could fix the bottom case... that he couldn't override it in the system, it was not an out of warranty repair PERIOD. So I was like "oh well at least the top case will be new.
So... the next day I pick up my macbook and take it home. When I unwrapped it I could not believe my eyes!!!! The top case was barely even attached! I could literally run my fingernail around the edge under the top case! It was only attached at the front right corner.
I called AppleCare.
The guy I talked to said he had NEVER HEARD of an Apple Store NOT fixing the bottom case out of warranty. So for all of you out there who get turned down at the Apple Store, they are wrong. He asked me to return it to the store, and apologized for all my trouble. The store shipped it off to the Apple repair place and I just got it back today delivered by fedex. (about 5 days)
They replaced: display assembly, display bezel, top case, bottom case, shield and clutch!!! All for free.
Thank you apple I love you again! Just like I used to.
Everybody, if you can't get anywhere with the geniuses at the store, call applecare. They rock!

I'm thinking about getting a refurb of one of these macbooks, and it's only the palmrest issue that puts me off.
I'd quite like a fw400 port, and I also like the easy-replaceable disk drive. But is the palmrest such a pain as to make a purchase (even with applecare) not worth it?

I have had my macbook for over a year and a half now and have had the case replaced once already. I am very careful about not putting weight on it, dropping it, or closing it too quickly. Once the case cracked at the wrists, the "feet" cracked as well and it started traveling up the sides of my case. Once it starts it all kind of snowballs.
The very nice people at the Apple Store replaced it free or charge and said that it was a common issue for my model and that they can't do anything about the design flaw.
Anyway, my wristpad is starting to show signs of cracking again and I want to stop it before it gets bad. Does anyone know of a hard plastic cover that would go on top of the wristpad? Would one work? I see all of the "sticker-like" ones online, but would that help the cracking or just cover dirt?
Any advice would be great!

The sticker ones would help with the cracking because the feet wouldn't press directly on the palmrest, instead, now presses on the padded sticker thing.

A few months ago, after having both the keyboard assembly and the bottom casing replaced due to cracks, the casing near the hinge started to crack.
I took the Macbook in to an Apple store, but they said they no longer fix Macbook cracks. As my Macbook is still in Applecare, and it appears that other Macbooks are getting fixed for free, should I try again?

Do you know if this is a real policy? I went to Apple store @ Alamoana Center (Honolulu, HI) - I bought my Macbook 10/2007 - and they told me it would not be covered and would cost "about $100 or $125 or more" - no one knew what they were talking about.
'Joy' was very certain about it "you should have bought apple care"...
My thought is that the macbook is already overpriced, to have to pay for apple care because of a design flaw! Wtf! Ironically apple is known for their 'design'...

It's definitely a real policy. I don't have the article number off the top of my head, but if you call 800-APL-CARE, almost everyone should know about this issue. You could also go back to the Genius Bar and hope you get someone who is familiar with basic Apple policy. I've really never heard of a Genius who didn't know about this issue.
In the unlikely even that you still get no luck, just send me a direct message and I'll look up the Apple Article Number for this issue. You can then take that article number to your Apple Store and they'll do the repair free of charge.

Booked my online appointed at the Apple, they told me to come back in an hour, and I got a new topcase/keyboard assembly for no charge. Internally, Apple charged themselves about $190.
No grief or other issued from the staff, just a 'Yep' and 'Can you come back in about an hour?"
BTW, my machine has been out of warrenty for 10 months, and I didn't buy AppleCare

Same story in Australia. Took Macbook with cracks in palmrest to the Apple store. It is 16 months out of warranty.
The computer was fixed in about 45 mins, no questions asked. They slightly dented the bottom case (can't complain on a 2+ year old computer) but otherwise great service.

I just got my late 2007 MacBook fixed today. It had developed two cracks on the palm rests. I had actually ignored it until the second one appeared. I made an appointment at the genius bar and they fixed it. No questions asked. It only took a couple of hours.

Out of warranty Macbook, cracked palmrest area, took it to the store and they had it fixed in 20 minutes. Apple rep told me this a documented Apple issue, and Apple will fix it free of charge for a period of three years after the purchase of the unit, no questions asked.
That's awesome! I'm actually going in to my local Apple Store tomorrow for the same issue...I'm guessing it's a common fault.
So they'll actually replace the casing even if it's something minor like this? (small part of the plastic casing came off) EDIT: Just noticed the exact same crack happened to another member's MacBook...crazy!

And I don't have a reservation for the Genius Bar...they were all booked out until Saturday. :o Can I still get it fixed?

That is the classic macbook crack, I have had that happen to me twice. And yes the will replace it.
My macbook is going in again on Friday because I noticed a very long crack on the very bottom of the machine which runs just next to the rear vent. Looking closely at it it is actually 4 or 5 cracks that have joined up.
Check your computer all over for cracks.

Typing this from the Apple Store in Sydney as we speak...just handed my MacBook in, no questions asked. Sadly it's registered as a 'QuickDrop', so it's going to take about 3-4 days to get it fixed. :( ah well.
Anyway, time to do some shopping... :D

Hmm, interesting. How long do they fix these things? My MB is 3 years + and I have cracks too. They don't bother me too much - all cosmetic after constant use and round the world travel, but would be good to know.

Yes, you should! My black late 2006 macbook had the same problem, and apple just fixed it yesterday. They also replaced the trackpad and the keyboard, but that's probably because it's all one piece. Like I said, I got it fixed yesterday, and if you're under applecare, you should definitely try again.

Today is April 20th 2010 and I just had my Macbook palmrest replaced free at an Apple store. Just take yours in if it is cracked as there is no time limit to get this done. It is an Apple Known issue with Macbooks and the guy there told me they would replace it for the life of the Macbook if need be as many times as it might need it. You do need to call the Apple store you want to take it to first and set up a reservation so you do not have to wait when you get there to get it done.

They replaced mine as well no questions asked today.
Mine was a late 2006 model.
I went in to replace my melted MagSafe which is another known issue and just happened to ask about the cracks and they took it immediately and I got it back within an hour!

Got mine replaced today.
Have a late-2006 white MacBook (no Applecare) with the same cracks along the edge of the palmrest. Called Apple today and that recognized it as a know issue and told me to bring it in to be repaired. Brought it in and in 30 minutes it was replaced. Not only the palmrest has been replaced, but the trackpad and keyboard! Both were working fine and I made no complaints to Apple about them (some keys had visible wear and the trackpad was shiny from over-use), but they are both brand new. I don't know if they have to replace the whole all the stuff if the palmrest is cracked or what, I thought it would be just the gray-ish plastic surrounding the keys replaced.
One thing I am a bit annoyed with was that I also complained to Apple that the bottom of my Mac is cracked along the vent at the back. Looks like dozens of tiny cracks joined together in one big long crack. When I called Apple they said that yes, they had heard of that happening and would also replace it. The Genius at the bar however told me that it is not a know issue and to replace it they would charge me and send it away. I may call Apple back and find out of the Genius was just mis-informed.
Either way, still happy my keys and tackpad look like new!

Wow, happy I stumbled across this!
I have a Macbook from January 2008 and mine cracked just over a year ago, when it was about 3 months out of Warranty. I figured it was a lost cause and never persued the matter, but I will certainly be making the trip to my local Apple store to get this fixed. I'll miss the crack though.. but not so much now I know it's not a unique scar for my Macbook :)
Thanks for this guys - I'm sure I'll post again when I've got this fixed!

Had mine repaired 3 months ago - the top-plate was falling to pieces really.
The bad news - they lied to me - said they put a support inside so it wouldn't happen again. Last week it cracked again and surprise surprise I can clearly see there is no support inside.
Not exactly impressed.

Dang, if I had known they'd just replace it if I brought it in, even if it was out of warranty, I'd have had mine replaced long time ago.
As is I already replaced it myself when I needed to replace the cooling fan and it's about to be older than three years (might be this month but I think it has a month before it's three years old).
*mutter*, I could have had a crackless keyboard a long time ago (I just kinda dealt with it since I decided it was cosmetic and I didn't think Apple would do anything about it since the computer was out of warranty. Though I had thought they should since everyone I know with this style laptop had those cracks so it was obviously a design flaw (friend of mine had them, the keyboard died and they replaced the top case with it, and the new top case cracked too!).
Well, at least I know Apple actually was being cool about it and fixing it for people.
So is it really caused by the two little "feet" on the monitor part resting on the keyboard rest? I always figured it was from my palms resting on the palm rest? I ask cause this matters on the new keyboard as when I first got the laptop I was using it more as a laptop (using the keyboard and it was open) where as now it's usually closed with my desktop keyboard sitting on top of it. I might have to find some padding for it when it's on my desk (rather not crack it again, at least not until they come out with a laptop I want to replace it with).

That's random as all hell, but I just got back from the Apple store with my new palmrest! Having a fresh keyboard and trackpad (mine had so much use they were glossy) is really, really nice, too.
So what's this I hear about a whole new laptop on the third repair?

My wife's white Macbook has been in for repair so many times I cannot even count; it has been sent in three separate times for cracked plastic alone.
2nd repair, and how it came back to us (video) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guapogringo/sets/72157622912511009/)
3rd repair that is being sent in now. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guapogringo/sets/72157623855162007/)
She has an extended Applecare warranty, and was refused repair the third time. I called Apple customer service and they sent us a box to get it repaired (on its way back now).
In addition to plastic, she has had the LCD screen replaced, keyboard topcase (first repair), battery, and now the fan (which is grinding).
This thing is a piece of junk, we are buying a Vaio when the semester is over.

I guess this might be the right place to ask this, since the thread I made hasn't gotten any replies.
I'm getting a deal on a used MB with one of these cosmetic cracks. Would that crack lead to other issues, or is it as simple as "take it to Apple"? I only ask because I don't want to get burned for $550 for being overzealous to buy a used MB.
The MB in question is about a year and a half old, 2gb, 2.40 ghz core 2 duo processor, running Leopard.

Aghh after a long battle with 3 different apple care guys, i finally got it solved. the first guy was nice and had everything ready, BUT....i was put on hold and because of this wind storm we are having, my phone got disconnected. i waited hoping he'd call back, nothing. i called back and told them i had already done this by phone and i was disconnected. the man asked what my problem was, i told him and he said "well you are almost 2 years into your expired warranty, therefore we can't help you" i told him what you guys where saying here and he said "well i do not know why an apple genius will tell you that, sorry. is there anything else i can help you with...?" so i said no and hung up. i called for the 3rd time, it was the same man, so i hung up... i called for the 4th time the same man again!!! AGHHH! (this is the time when i almost felt like slapping myself for not using my cell phone to call in the first place, the other nice man got disconnected ...:() so i called in for the 5th time and i got another guy who was giving me issues, he had told me my warranty had expired, i explained to him and told him that even though it had expired i was told that i was still able to get it fixed with in 3 years. The guy went to go ask or do something, when he came back he was asking me for my information...:) i knew it was a good sign. after 4 minutes or so, he had to verify with someone since my warranty had expired, and this is the part where i got disconnected the first time...:(...YES i was scared all over again... i was put on hold for 10 dreadful minutes, each second being more scary than the last. any who after a long long hour of all this happening, i finally got the OK.. :]
so the meaning of this is DO NOT GIVE UP! they will fix it just be patient and if you get rejected call back, because there are some people who are working there that quite frankly do not care. they just do not want to bother on double checking to see if it is possible...:/
i would have taken it to the local apple store, but the closest one is 1 hour & 30 minutes away... pretty far and that is not including traffic. (traffic in LA is harsh!)
now i will be getting my palm wrest fixed and the rim of the LCD screen because it is also cracked!!! >:(....
by the way, they asked for my password on my account... why did they do that for? the problem is obviously External not software issues....

I went because my hard drive started playing up, they also noticed the cracked plastic on the top, and they quoted my over 200 quid (when it wasn't in warranty) to replace the hard drive, reinstall the OS and replace the plastic. So I took it to a different apple store, and because it was the last thing on a sunday night, they took it and replaced all that for FREE and put a new battery in, because they noticed mine didn't hold charge long.

So I need to venture into the city again whenever they call me. Pretty annoyed as I was told on the phone it would only take an hour or so and I should have it the same day.

Why don't u just take it in to an Apple Store and see if they replace it. Lots of people who got their Macs in 2006 got theirs relacesd. (See Page 13 of this thread)... I am in the same boat as ur. Apparently Apple redesigned the bezel and released a new version a couple of weeks ago, according to the genius in the london Brent Cross store. So it seems that it is still an ongoing issue with these MacBooks.
I was told that the bezel was the likely cause of the crack in the bottom case on the corner where the screen comes to rest however they didn't want to fix it as: "It is cosmetic" and/or "The case isn't covered under the warranty" Of course if it isn't covered why are you telling me it is only cosmetic?
After a little insistence they are fixing it.
